So EB games is still functional, but I can't sell my games to my friends or to a pawnshop unless EA says its ok (and after I pay them). My question is if Microsoft isn't making money this way, why offer it? To entice developers/publishers to make games for their console I guess, but even then they already are throwing millions of dollars at the issue. Publishers won't make money selling games for a console that no one wants/has because of this. As a side note, Sony gave up a big advantage by allowing Blu-Rays on the Xbox One. The last two playstations functioned as competitively priced movie players (compared to others at launch) and as serious game consoles. They will still make money in the short term (and they need it), but winning the next console generation would be a better payoff.

EB games and by connection GameStop might not still be functional if We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. means what I think it means, IE MS chooses who and how they allow such a practice. The business of each gaming allowed 1 license transfer is also a big damper. Take in the opt in for devs to decide the arbitrary fee paid to them...
Its offered mainly because publishers have been clamoring for such practices. Offer what the publishers want and the games will follow. Get enough games on your system and you will sell loads of them no matter what you charge or how shitty the DRM scheme is. As they see it, the used game market costs them a sale everytime. You bought a used game, they see it as a lost sale or sometimes even go so far as to label a theft, worse then a pirate because you have a legal copy and they need to give you support w/o you having paid them or some such train of thought its all a cluster fuck. Sadly, they will of course sell millions of consoles and millions of games for that console. Next gen, we shall see a larger and more intrusive DRM scheme. Maybe pay per play? Maybe next batch of consoles will be like facebook and other services, "Do these offers to earn game time!, Also heres a fuck ton of ads everywhere because we havnt made enough money". cough..

There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once. Is interesting.
As is, We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers.
Wonder how thats gunna work out.

Every true gamer should be talking about companies that use DRM. Not just about Microsoft or EA, everyone. Especially when it comes to the length of life any games we purchase have.
I for one get really angry when a game I want to play is unplayable because of ridiculous DRM.
Especially when I paid my hard earned cash to play it.
"Caveat emptor"
Let the buyer beware. If they are not, then corporate run game publishers will greed you to death. Don't let them. Vote with your money. If you see a company constantly producing games that have a 'shelf life', avoid it and find something else (and probably better, without being rigged to die on you in 2 years) to play. There are many many good game companies out there making good, fresh original games. Just 2 more of my pennies!

I would be playing just as many games as I do now, I'd be finding easy ways to buy them as well, without steam.
I'm not interesting in how I get my games, I just like playing my games they were meant to be played, without being forced to do anything except buy them to play them. How I play them after I paid for them should be my own business. If I want to play with others online, I will. If I choose to play offline over a LAN or whatever with friends, I shouldn't have to do anything special. I paid for the game, I will enjoy it as I see fit, for as long as my computer is able to run the software.
In that sense steam is redundant, and at the time steam came out, they were rather despised, for being invasive, and DRM insulting. They've become the lesser of a whole lot of evil, so I abide by them, for now. I certainly won't be slowed down or find myself missing them if they go away, I'll still find awesome games to play on my computer without them. And I won't even be worrying if places like steam go down to play them.
They are not the only source of games I have, nor will they ever be.

The system would no doubt be worked around. My brother can't play his games ( at all times ) that he bought on Steam because he doesn't have an Internet connection, every few weeks he needs to bring his PC to my house so that Steam can check up on him and make sure he's still using the service ( I guess that's the reason ) and it will allow him to play in offline mode for a few more weeks. If Steam went down, however, there would be workarounds left and right that would allow you to circumvent the Steam client and play your games offline indefinitely.

If Valve fails to deliver their promise to release patches that remove Steam DRM from all Steam-delivered games, users will come through for the users.
We already have Steam server emulators. Many DRM-cracked Steam games use one. DRM only works against users who are willing to be inconvenienced. Pirates and intelligent users have no problems with most DRM that exist.

So this crap on top of Microsoft pissing off numerous Japanese developers so there are pretty much no more JRPGs on Xbox, plus some personal gripes that I'm not getting into basically turned me back into a Sony fan.

You know what is even better? ONLINE DRM ON SINGLE-PLAYER GAMES BECAUSE "THE POWER OF THE CLOUD"

"Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games. Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you."
Yes because that's totally new in consoles.

Have to say that was the best thing I have read all day. I was like, "but I already grab my roommates disc and play it, how is this new?" lol

Right on! That's how it was, that's how it is, and that's how it should be if I am buying anything. Games are meant to be played with the people around you forever and always. Stop trying to wreck the fun, or I will buy my games somewhere else!

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. This generation of consoles might find themselves losing casual gamers to tablets, phones, and perhaps even F2P PC games. I suspect that's part of the reason Microsoft is attempting to market this as an all-in-one system rather than strictly a gaming system. Still, this could backfire for Microsoft because if they lose the casual gamers due to the nature of the changing market, then they'll be battling for the hardcore gamers that they're currently alienating.
For me personally, I don't have a Wii U and I'm not getting any of the consoles this year. I'm happy playing PC games and while I might end up getting a console later depending on the games and pricing, none of them really stand out to me yet.

They phrased it poorly, but I understand what they meant.
They didn't mean that all potential XBoners have broadband. They meant that all Xboners (by nature of necessity) have broadband, and that means that developers can create games under that assumption. Its kind of like creating games that utilize Kinect/Wii Motion+/Move. Because developers can't assume that everyone has it, they have to also cater to the people that don't. Since the people that don't have broadband won't be able to use XBox Juan, they don't have to take those people into account.
Not that I agree or like anything MS is doing with the XBox Juan, but there are plenty of legimate things to be disappointed with regarding this console. Shouldn't get hung up on their many verbals missteps.

Someone made a comment regarding this fiasco, and I thought I'd share it with you guys.
It's unlikely, but what if it was all Microsoft's plan to get attention?

"Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time."
I'm not a native English speaker so could someone confirm if this means that I can add my friends as "family members" and when I buy a game my "family members" can play it with their own console and own account? edit: without the game disc

microsoft goes to hell, its the first time i will buy a sony product,ps4. Microsoft made something like a dvd-player with internet connection and music, but no good games, and i actually thought the whole presentation when they said "XBOX on", "XBOX to the game", it was a deception as he had something like a slide switcher inside his pocket.

PS4 is reported to have better hardware than the XBox One. That being said, anyone with a PC capable of playing current-gen games at 1080p with 30fps minimum should save their money and stay with PC.
I almost bought a PS3 last generation, but decided to just get a blu-ray drive for my PC. I could already run PS3 ports at higher settings, so blu-ray was the only pull.

I agree, its better to stay on PC, but i have a notebook, so i don't mind, i already have many good things in it, so i want to buy a console, there is E3 now and Sony "killed" Microsoft by saying that PS4 won't need Internet connection and you can share games, so i am buying a PS4

"Because every Xbox One owner has a broadband connection"
What? Why are they even making a statement like that? If that statement becomes true it'll be because they made it so by requiring broadband connection and not because the people who would have bought the newest Xbox already always have it. Those who don't have broadband connection aren't going to buy it now...

"In areas where an Ethernet connection is not available, you can connect using mobile broadband."
Hope you have a good data plan!

It was implied. This is the first time Microsoft themselves have said it directly.

Because that is a fallacy. Most of the people who resell their games use that money to get new games.
Guess what will happen when that option isn't there? Right, there will be less sales.

So basicly.. we can play, share and trade our games if Microsoft and the Pubishers feel like it, we ask nicely enough, stay connected and letting them spy on us.. but theres always TV, because who plays games anymore? xD
Some of the features sound rather nice like the Family-Share function, but its only great if its optional.. if I can CHOOSE to register a game online to enjoy those benefits with the downsides of conection-dependency.

I just hope Sony will provide one.. so far they seem willing to be "the alternative".
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah,Microsoft really messed this up.The console isn't bad,and the features are nice.Me myself i never owned a console and it's not really affecting me,but i used to mod PS2 a while ago.Maybe after some time there will be some kind of mod or new chip for the xbox 1 that can prevent all this restrictions that Microsoft has,i don't know...We will see in the future..

Xbox's Statement on Connection
Xbox's Statement on Used Games
Perhaps my favorite part of the whole thing is how they state that you can't play games after 24 hours of no connection to the internet, but "you can enjoy Live TV, Blu-ray and DVD movies."
Yes. Because that was totally the reason why I bought the console. For movies and TV, not for games.
Edit: Some of you noted that I forgot to include the info regarding used games. Apologies! Here it is.
