Insidious scares the hell out of me... Generally any movie involving evil kids (not necessarily this one, but talking in general), is freaking scary...
It's amazing how they are transformed easily from cute and inoffensive to evil'ish trying to kill you >_>

I have seen a ton of horror movies over the years and it's hard for me to pin a favourite. Off the top of my head I would definitely recommend May.

The Haunting
You never quite know if the house was actually haunted or if she was just crazy
The Vanishing
Unlike any other horror you'll ever watch - no jump scares, no cliches, and the movie tells you everything that's going to happen

Beware the Asian horror movie scene, I often find them to be less horror and more drama/thriller - which is undoubtedly part of what makes them so great. An excellent example of this is The Cat. Another example is Into the Mirror where the US remake is much more horror than the original (which is more like a paranormal and unhappy love story). Both are good films, The Cat is excellent even, but they aren't exactly horror in my opinion.
For the best Asian horror movie that had me scared for real, I'll go with P.O.V..

Not sure what my favorite is since I saw a lot of good ones. But I recently saw The Shining and that movie was just creepy. Something about Jack Nicholson that I can't explain but he is so creepy lol. I try to rationalize a lot of things in the movie but still can't really make sense of it all.

I'm no fan of the genre. Mostly it's just gore with no substance or material that would never manage to cause any fear.
Some dramas on the other hand ... Whiplash was far more challenging than any horror movie I've ever seen.
Few horror movies I enjoyed:
It Follows
The Ring

Some of my favorites in no particular order...
Modern
Foreign
Silent
For your enjoyment, feel free to watch what is considered the first horror film ever made.
