And since you never played new vegas besides owning it, it surely must suck compared to fallout 3...what a nice "argument"....
@OP:
FO3 had a more emmersive world and a somehow more "epic" mainstoryline.
FO:NW was like a big expansion (gameplay wise) with more bugs, more good sidequests and the cool dlc "Honest Hearts" and the epic "Old World Blues". :)

"The story was an incoherent mix of previous entries in the franchise."
I remember first playing it and going "What...wait...didn't what I do this.." because I was trying to remember why it was so familiar.

Fallout 3 if new to the series.
New Vegas if you are a fan of the original Fallout and Fallout 2.
Basically Fallout 3 is more of a streamlined epic story but felt like a little too streamlined, good atmosphere.
New Vegas is more true to the original of a less epic story but a very intertwined one of real multiple outcomes. No surprise there because the original developers of Fallout and Fallout 2 got on board to make the game.
Fallout 3 focused on reinventing the series and to make a point. Fallout New Vegas went duck it, we will have fun!

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are basically two sides of the same coin. They are both Fallout games that happen to approach the issue differently. To me, it felt like Fallout 3 built a story around a world. Where as New Vegas seemed to build a world around a story. Fallout 3 had far greater atmosphere that was more true to Fallout. It had a deep rooting in the American 50's, easily seen by the music, architecture, vocabulary, politics, technology, and the general look of stuff. New Vegas had a much deeper and richer story. There were more quests, more people, more options. Greater moments of realization and much more dramatic twists. It also had Old World Blues which is a great trip through 50's science fiction. But the world of New Vegas felt to classic western to me. It's the Las Vegas of 1950, not 1850. Fallout 3 also lacked content wise, didn't have much stuff to do. Instead it focused more on open exploration of DC over scripted quests.
But they are both Fallout. They are both full of pop culture references, insane quarks, crazy people, and absurd stories. Play them both and enjoy them for their strengths. Neither are bad, but Fallout 3 has better music.

You really think so? I felt the opposite, I agree on the music being better in 3, thank god for modded stations.

Fallout asks the question, "what would happen if culture paused post-WW2, but technology advanced rapidly?" Fallout 3 felt like the Second Red Scare silver age American Dream that Fallout should feel like. The only thing that fit in New Vegas was The Strip. The rest was too western.

Sorry but New Vegas is much much much more a Fallout game then 3 will ever be, I honestly don't understand how you can think different about this, I get why someone would like 3 better but to say its more true to the series is just an crazy talk.
Most would agree that NV is the real Fallout 3, Fallout 3 feels like a spin off to me and pretty much everyone I ever spoke to about it, atmosphere or not.

I was extrapolating on what I stated earlier in that Fallout 3 had a world worth exploring and caring about. The options available to the playing were very limited and the story was too black and white. Hate the Enclave, love the Brotherhood, blah, blah, and more blah. But what Fallout 3 lacked in content, New Vegas had. The world was a shame. But the people felt human, and the factions felt real. On the surface you saw the good factions and the bad, but as you played you saw that they all had their ups and downs. There were dozens of possible endings and options that made you want to make lots of characters. The story fit in with the established canon of the series and it was set in the same area as the others. I felt like New Vegas had a bit to much open desert and cowboys.
Fallout 3 had a world worth exploring, and New Vegas had a story worth telling. We saw what Fallout could be if those two elements mixed with Old World Blues, and I can only hope Bethesda continues that with Fallout 4.

I liked exploring in NV, I guess everyones different though, I also appreciated that it went away into a new setting instead of basically repeating FO1 and FO2 setting to a pretty big extent(Hell look at the story, but I think we agree there). Granted exploring FO3 at the time felt more grand, mostly due to the fact of it being the first 3D fallout, it was a new experience, it had that in its favor.
Eh everyones different, I hope Bethesda took some notes from NV and do make FO4 much better then FO3, I am not holding out hope though, not sure that they like to learn from others...they kinda just repeat themselves and ignore advice from the community, but still they are far from the worst devs and FO3 is still a decent game, It just could have been so so so much better, NV proved that to me.
Heres looking forward to NV part 2, oh god I hope this becomes a reality.

The way I see it is like this. Bethesda had to reboot a franchise that a lot of mainstream people didn't play. They could have gone all out on Fallout 3 and make a true successor, but if it didn't sell great there might not have been more. Bethesda gave Obsidian New Vegas. If it flopped it wouldn't be on Bethesda's hands. But it did better then Fallout 3 and I think Bethesda knows that. Now that everyone is familiar with Fallout I think they will go all out.

I really hope you are correct, because that would be great, if all else fails, hopefully Obsidian takes a shot at a new one.

I would disagree, I loved the setting in NV, I also liked the one in 3, I love that they are both very different honestly, glad Obsidian went in a totally different direction with it style wise.
I hated the sewers in 3 though, it get points docked for those...

New Vegas has a better story/characters/factions/dialogue with more choices & consequences,
Fallout 3 has a fairly black & white storyline and is more about exploration.
If your a fan of the originals stick with New Vegas as Fallout 3 might annoy you.

If you're new to the series, get Fallout 3. But if you're a fan of the original games, get Fallout NV.

I would pick Fallout 3, it's a matter of personal preference though. Remember to get the DLC too! Both games have great variety when it comes to downloadable stuff.

I know it's been said, but NV is better in almost every respect. The best part of 3 was the Brotherhood DLC. NV had be on the edge of my seat the whole time and they made such a fascinating and lively universe whereas 3 just about put me to sleep continuously. The choices in NV made me set the controller down and really consider what consequences might follow each decision. 3 was pretty generic (light side/dark side, paragon/renegade, good/evil).
