I recently finished watching Game of Thrones with my wife. I’ve watched it before but once my wife gets over the shock / disappointment from season 8, we’ll need a new series to watch in the evenings.

I’ll watch pretty much anything but my wife is not big into fantasy / magic stuff. She just about managed with the dragons and white walkers in GOT because she was so engaged with the story. Anyone have any recommendations? We have Netflix and HBO. No spoilers please.

All aboard! The train has reached it's destination and all keys have been sent. Congrats to all the winners. Thank you to everyone that made suggestions for shows! We have enough to keep us busy for a long time now.

Sense8.
First one was best season, the following are...meh.
But overall a great serie.
Right now I'm watching Chernobyl on Hbo.

There's only two seasons of Sense8. I actually liked the second season better - it felt a little rushed, but after the slow character introductions of the first season I enjoyed the action packed, break-neck pace of the second.

Regardless, I really enjoyed it. Glad they were able to finish it. :)

I don't know why but I keep considering the ending as "the third season" XD

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, I can see that. I watched the show after the ending came out, so I thought of it as the grand finale.

I can see where you're coming from, though. In the first season they really took their time, built everything up in detail - I felt the pace was a bit too slow for my tastes, but there was a lot of detail to everything. In the second season, when they realized they weren't going to have the 3+ seasons they originally envisioned to tell the story, they had to pack everything in to try to resolve as much as they could. I liked the much faster pace, but it did feel a bit rushed sometimes. The finale was pure fan service, but I really enjoyed it - I feel like it did exactly what it set out to do of wrapping up the story and giving the fans the ending they were longing for.

Season 8 was terribad, but the prior three weren't great either. The moment they overtook Martin's story they were injecting hollywood shlock.

Kudos to /r/freefolk and successors for keeping the hate alive with great memes.

I'm not so the series type but when I watch one I binge it pretty hard.

  • While having no Netflix I heard Stranger Things get's a lot of love.
  • Black Mirror is short movie collection I sometimes enjoy with friends.
Every episode is a short movie with different lengths, between 40 n 90 min It examines modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies. Episodes are standalone, usually set in an alternative present or the near future, often with a dark and satirical tone, although some are more experimental and lighter. - from Wikipedia

Sort of lost interest in Stranger Things midway through the second series and haven't watched the third yet. Will watch it at some point, but probably not up my wife's street. Also, watched a couple of episodes of Black mirror and found it enjoyable. Wife might like that one as well. Thanks for the suggestions!

I definitely second Fringe. Some episodes are just "Monster of the week", but the foreshadowing in this series is perfect, and I don't think any other series came close.

if you like shows about the past, I'll recommend The Americans

Fringe is one of the few shows that I watched the intro credits for every single episode (I watched all 5 seasons in a row on DVD). :)

I find the 5th season to be the weakest, but it is still an interesting one. I think you'd really like the show!

Yeah same. The way it played out, it was so clear that the minds behind it always had a long game in mind. Most other TV shows will forget things they've done in the past or forget about characters introduced, but I think just about every plot thread was recalled and resolved by the end.

Yeah that's what I thought too. I mean most titles in the first few are just released or not even released yet. It's just curiosity at this point.
Ratings on imdb are already pretty useless at this point, with all the plants etc but they're more reliable for titles after a few months when publicity has died down.

Vikings. It would be a compromise considering that it's pretty much fantasy, but without magic.
Also, I didn't mind season 8 (except for that horrendous attack on Winterfall, of course).
Also, definitely Dark. It's like Lost, but German low budget Nordic noir - and yes, time travel! A lot of time travel!

the ending of season 2 was absolutely terrible.

Huh, strange. I thought it was great. My only complaint I have so far is that season 4 was really slow in comparison to the others.

Did you watch breaking bad?

Nope, still haven't got around to it. I think all that mainstream hype while it was running turned me off. I'll get to it at some point.

Comment has been collapsed.

You should especially if you enjoy better call saul. BCS feels like the smaller and younger brother of breaking bad. Its really good but everything it does is done better by breaking bad, at least so far.
SPOILERS ahead for season 2 of better call saul
About the ending of season 2 better call saul, i hated it because the whole season 2 is focusing on 2 events, Mike's revenge and and Jimmy vs Chuck. The episode before the finale showed a few events that made you think there will be some action in the end.Mike will try something and Jimmy will change as he said in the end of season 1 (you will understand better what i mean if you watch breaking bad). Instead we got the so mainstream end of every series, nothing happens wait for season 3. A whole season was hyping you up for nothing. This season didnt add anything to the series. Thats the main reason that i have stopped for now and i will see if i am going to watch season 3 and 4 before el camino gets released. And thats the main reason i prefer Breaking bad to Better call saul, in the first there is a reason for every scene and dialogue. Nothing gets shown just to increase the length of the series.

You don't. It's a prequel, and works well on it's own.

I couldn't get into Better Call Saul. I loved Breaking Bad, but BCS just failed to hook me in the same way. It seemed like something to watch just because it was made by the same people who made a favorite show, rather than something I'd watch on its own merits.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A had never watched Breaking Bad before, but I was hooked on BCS after 2 episodes. Character interactions and humor were on point for m.

I would give it another try. If you only got through Season 1, I'll have you know it gets better with every season.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I only watched the first season, and while I enjoyed the first couple episodes, I felt like it dropped off from there. I felt like everything that happened in the rest of the season was less interesting and exciting than the first two episodes.

I don't know, maybe I should give it another try and watch the second season. I initially didn't like the second season of Breaking Bad (after loving the first season), but when I went back and watched it again I couldn't figure out why as I felt the second season was really good. On the other hand, I was never as captivated by Mad Men as everyone else seemed to be, and I thought Deadwood dropped off significantly after the first season. /shrug

There is nothing else worth watching if you end up watching breaking bad. It has a bit slow start but every season is so much better than the previous one and the last season is a masterpiece. There is a reason thats its the higest rated series ever at imdb.
But after you watch it no other series will achieve to hold your attention for too long.

Sorry for the late response but another masterpiece that you will propably both love as its not into fantasy and its a bit darker like breaking bad is True detective season 1. I think its pretty close to breaking's bad level, The other 2 seasons werent near that level but they are still enjoyable.

Lost is decent to pretty good up until season 5. Season 6 is too convoluted, and many people didn't like (or understand) the ending.

Btw, I shouldn't assume that you've watched Rome HBO. I only got around to it myself this past year. The Sinner - it's kind of a reverse engineered murder mystery with lot of twists and turns that has flown under the radar perhaps because nobody expected this kind of quality from a USA network show. Netflix has it on disc and depending on where you live VOD. Last rec, I promise.
