I recently finished watching Game of Thrones with my wife. I’ve watched it before but once my wife gets over the shock / disappointment from season 8, we’ll need a new series to watch in the evenings.

I’ll watch pretty much anything but my wife is not big into fantasy / magic stuff. She just about managed with the dragons and white walkers in GOT because she was so engaged with the story. Anyone have any recommendations? We have Netflix and HBO. No spoilers please.

All aboard! The train has reached it's destination and all keys have been sent. Congrats to all the winners. Thank you to everyone that made suggestions for shows! We have enough to keep us busy for a long time now.

well, I have watched months of netflix. Vikings gets better and better. And there we go with something without spoilers.
Dr house is funny enough.
Glee has amazing covers and plot
I'm watching SHIELD right now, very long and gives you everything you want

The walking dead, gets better and better, last seasons are the bests. (my favorite character belongs to this serie)
The punisher, my favorite "action" serie.
House of cards, good actor, good serie.
Gotham, lot of characters

Some films (Now you see me/Now you see me 2) / Django unchained / Oceans (eleven,twelve,thirteen..) The hateful eight

And yes, I gonna upvote the "dissapointing" final season of GoT.

  • Dark is very good, second that one.

  • Dark Crystal Age of Resistance, is really good. Like GOT but with puppets. Maybe too far on the fantasy side for your wife, but the nostalgic feel could sell it.

  • Good Omens

My that's a nice concept... and I love that it seems to be still independent (unlike, say, IMDB). Might open an account there, I tend to lose tracks of my favorite series, which is a bit annoying sometimes :D

Bump and meow. Breaking Bad is my favorite, but I also really liked The Wire, which my wife liked even more than BB. Chernobyl is excellent, but short. For something completely different I also recommend Russian Doll - watch more than one episode; the less you know about it the more you'll like it.
Oh yeah, +1 for Narcos.

"The final season of Game of Thrones... I didn't watch, just like the other seasons"

I’ll watch pretty much anything

If it doesn't have to be recent:

  • The IT Crowd
  • The Brittas Empire
  • Last Man Standing
  • The Thin Blue Line
  • Black Adder
  • Coupling

Just curious, did you watch it as it aired, or afterward when it was bingeable?

Watched it (though I mostly skimmed the third season, I think) when it aired and was disappointed with the ending and some of the episodes, but watched a fan recut of it later on (can't say which recut because of spoilers) that got me to appreciate the show as a whole much more. I think a lot of the reason the ending was disappointing is the hype when it aired and the promise of something unexpected. Also many nuances of the explanations were sorta lost (no pun intended) among the many threads of more important story bits. Most things are explained, even if the explanations aren't very satisfying.

have seen it twice i saw it after it came out sat down and watched it all at once (took a week maybe a little less) and then recommended it to a friend and saw most of it again with him but you are right in the first 2-3 seasons is the best but the series does not get bad after that. if you ask me :)

The first two seasons of Lost were great. Third was alright. Then after that it starts going downhill fast. You realize the writers are just pulling things outta their ass. The whole thing becomes nonsense. If you don't need a show where every season is amazing (like Breaking Bad) then you can watch Lost and just enjoy the first two or three seasons. If you watch the whole thing you might get annoyed by the end.

Both Netflix...

  • Galavant -- Musical, farcical fantasy. Was recommended this one via SG, and it's a lot of fun. Sadly didn't make it past two seasons, but even getting a second season was already a welcome surprise. We watched between seasons of GoT, and it was a nice change of pace.
  • Money Heist (aka La Casa de Papel) -- A show from Spain, so I watched it in Spanish with English subtitles, but there is an English dub. It's a heist show with some trappings of Breaking Bad, and fun to watch if you don't mind a few convenient contrivances. Great ensemble cast of characters. I was very surprised to hear that there was a third season, and I've watched that too, but I'm also now anticipating a fourth season.

Also +1 to an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. recommendation I just saw -- there's a few rough seasons, but it's so very worth getting through the off seasons, imho. IIRC, don't expect much from Season 3.

On Netflix or hbo....
I will also highly recommend Person of Interest. Dexter was darkly disturbing. Jericho was an interesting concept that started strong, but fizzled.
If you're bilingual Spanish or just don't mind subtitles, Velvet and Grand Hotel are both engrossing and entertaining. Call the Midwife is excellent, but I doubt recommend it if your wife is currently pregnant, or you're about to have your first child.

I was just kidding, its a fantastic cartoon, not a live show with real people from netflix or whatever. If you are sincere, nah, watch with your wife man, its not fantasy or magic stuff, you never said anything about sci fi haha, watch with her, its fun & funny. Heres the first episode, watch it fully, unfortunately the episodes on youtube are a mess, whether because of quality or unable to find the right episodes in the correct order, (1,2,3,4,5, season 01, season 02, etc.) https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7lb71o

Not into sci fi? Wow...thats...alot of stuff she isnt into, makes me wonder what is she into then. Some normal stuff or something, i dunno... will watch it with two kids? Arlight, thats cool, i would too if i had any, or even just kid friends, which i happen to have one but, its just very unlikely to happen due to circumstances, im sure he would love it, hope your's does too, i dont know where or how is the best possible way to find a neatly listed list of all the episodes in chronological order in the highest quality possible, youtube's lists are just jumble messes, might have to do some digging or find a place outside youtube, tought it was sufficient enough, maybe is, im not sure., i dont know. If you dont require me to do that for you then good luck, i know lots of other good cartoons to watch if youre interested, might need some memory jogging to remember them all though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, she says she is not into sci-fi but she has watched things in that genre before and has enjoyed it. I guess it just depends on the story and characters. Honestly I don't think she knows what she likes until she sees it :) Don't hassle yourself with making a list of episodes. I will look into myself. Thanks again!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But has watched sci fi stuff that she enjoyed....maybe like, War of the Worlds? Wonder what. But i see, depends on story and characters, untill she sees it she wont know, so maybe she should still see it, just the first episode. But i see, kind of like me i guess when it comes to music, like, i dont normaly listen for example to rock music but if i hear it and enjoy it... i enjoy it, like in GTAs, i ussualy stay off rock stations but every once a while if i hear rock music and its good, i like it. Dont hassle myself? Look yourself? Alright, cool, good luck then, shame its so much trouble, i could suggest more if you want, maybe specificaly for your kids though, or maybe not, i dunno, just lots of good cartoons out there from years before.

Know what you mean about Music. I just like whatever sounds good tbh. Don't really have favourite genres. Btw, will let you know if I run out of ideas for my kids. I have a lot of older shows that I'd like them to watch but of course they prefer more modern stuff. Thanks again for all the help :)

Pretty much agree with 75% of those above rec's.

If you like Narcos (Pablo Escobar), then you'll want to continue on with
Narcos: Mexico

If you like Black Mirror (a modern dark Twilight Zone series), then
Electric Dreams (Amazon Prime free) is another standalone episodes reflecting on humanity. Electric Dreams author also wrote
The Man in the High Castle series (Amazon Prime free).

Black Sails, the last season had mixed reviews, but I enjoyed a good gritty pirate series with out Depp.

Wife and I are now rewatching SyFy channel's
Battlestar Galactica series, beautifully done epic reboot of the 80's series. Watch the Miniseries first, then season 1 + 2, then the webisodes, etc. Confusing but this list works https://m.imdb.com/list/ls052129343/

The Expanse, (SyFy) another well written Sci-Fi, season 4 comes out in December (Amazon Prime free).

Altered Carbon (Netflix), sci-fi, very confusing first season until you realize the main character has flash backs to past bodies (different actors). Ending was a let down in my opinion. But had me until the end.

Some of those series have all but the last season on Netflix.

Other well done treasure that we as a couple agreed on:

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, series about upstart female comedian that draws you in

Mad Men, each season feels like you're drawn thru an era.

Shannara Chronicles (SyFy?), Magic in the future, a bit campy, but I was a sucker for the books.

One I hesitate as some people hated it, Downton Abbey, well done period piece which now has a movie in movie theaters now.

Older series that were top of their game:

Rome (HBO), starting to age, great period piece.

The Sopranos (HBO), starting to age, who doesnt like mafia theme, especially when the boss sees a shrink.

West Wing, political White House series came between the UK and US version of House of Cards.

Firefly, cowboy sci-fi series that was cancelled then a movie (Serenity) made several years later.

Band of Brothers and
The Pacific series (HBO) takes the Saving Private Ryan WW2 movie theme to the next level.

Jeremiah (Showtime), future run by children, they rushed the ending, but intrigued us.

Tatiana Maslany should have been nominated for one Emmy in each of the drama categories, every year. But hey at least she won once. For a small scifi show, that's not too bad.

Yeah the last season had some hits and misses but the show is still in my Top 3. I'll be rewatching it for years, I'm sure.

Bojack Horseman takes a few episodes to get going, but it's easily one of the best television series I've ever seen, and it's completely available on Netflix. It can get painfully depressing on certain episodes, but I'd say it's worth it.

Outlander is fairly fun and also available on Netflix. You have to suspend disbelief at times, particularly when it comes to the heroine's ridiculously sumptuous wardrobe, but it's a nice, action-packed romance that's easy to watch an episode at a time. As a content warning, there is some (generally not overly graphic) rape and torture during one part of the series in particular, but given what I've heard of GoT, I think you'll be alright.
