I recently finished watching Game of Thrones with my wife. I’ve watched it before but once my wife gets over the shock / disappointment from season 8, we’ll need a new series to watch in the evenings.

I’ll watch pretty much anything but my wife is not big into fantasy / magic stuff. She just about managed with the dragons and white walkers in GOT because she was so engaged with the story. Anyone have any recommendations? We have Netflix and HBO. No spoilers please.

All aboard! The train has reached it's destination and all keys have been sent. Congrats to all the winners. Thank you to everyone that made suggestions for shows! We have enough to keep us busy for a long time now.

I'm not sure if you have those on Netflix in your country, but I can recommend Star Trek: Discovery, which is very good if you're into sci-fi. Also, Cloak & Dagger is surprisingly good. I expected something shallow, but it's actually very interesting, with good characters. Can't wait for the new season for both shows.

And thanks for the GAs!

I'll throw in a bunch of repeats, but oh well:

The Wire: It's GoT with guns... Okay it's not, but its freakin' awesome. Every season has a new story line with an overarching story covering it all.
Banshee: Violence, tits, and a good story. It has some great moments where you'll sit in front of the TV yelling "kill the evil bastard!" I love those moments.
Black Sails: Realistic pirates...well, you know, kinda. A retelling of one of my favourite childhood stories, but with more boobies.
The Expanse: Sci-fi that doesn't go overboard with the fancy gadgets and over-theorized technology. I'm gonna try and find me the books to read.
Homeland: I dunno, maybe I have bad taste, but I don't get any of the negative reviews. I think it's very well put together, not overacted, and follows current affairs in later seasons.

Well since most replies got into drama territory (understandable by your OP mentioning coming off GoT), and there is a deficit to comedies, I'd like to highlight 5 titles for you:

  1. Spaced is a UK tv series made by Edgar Wright (director of the Cornetto Trilogy, Scott Pilgrim and Baby Driver), basic premise is that 2 strangers have to pretend that they are a couple to be able to rent an apartment in London, then other things happen, 25 min sitcom with a whole bunch of visual and plot creativity involved.
  2. Black Books another UK show, about a book store where the owner kinda hates customers and people in general, but has a good heart.
  3. Blunt Talk is about an aging news anchor (or rather star of his own news show, played by the magnificent Sir Patrick Stewart), and his staff of weirdos. Apart from being funny it is a very humanistic (dunno if this is the proper word) story where the creators clearly really liked all characters.
  4. Bored to Death to pair off Blunt Talk, this shares the same creator (and the same love for the characters in the story), was made for HBO so surely you will find it on GO (I sadly have no idea about the availability of the previous ones). It is about a writer who wants to be a detective, but has no real experience in the matter, other than old books he has read, then gets thrown into a pretty heavy case right at the begining.
  5. Episodes is last but not least a Showtime series which might be available on HBO? (at least it was distributed by them in my country) The main selling point of this series is that it offers a look behind the curtains of large networks and how tv shows are made, all through the eyes of a brittish writer couple who moved to LA to remake their UK show with the addition of Ex-Friends star Matt LeBlanc cast in the leading role (playing himself).

+1 Veep this one popped in my head as I was writing 'behind the courtains', this one is political satire, with a lot of screw ups and very little sugarcoating involved. Also made for HBO.

Few suggestions that I didn't see, though unsure if they are available to you or not.

1) Berlin Station, which is a modern day spy series, reminded me quite a bit of noir films. Not that action packed, but a decent pace overall. 3 seasons, cancelled without closing all the threads.
2) Burn Notice, which has an ex-CIA agent trying to figure out who burned him, while helping various people with their problems in the meanwhile. 7 seasons all in all.
3) Crisis, in which a high school class full of the children of the high and mighty is abducted, and the kidnappers blackmail their parents into deeds that may compromise national security. 1 season, finished with the possibility of a second one that never came.
4) Designated Survivor, in which after a terrorist attack, a lowly cabinet member ends up as POTUS, in the midst of chaos, and tries to pull the country back up from its knees. 3 seasons.
5) Graceland, in which we follow the lives of several undercover federal officers after they are joined by the newest recruit, who is sent there to build a case against one of the older members of the group. 3 seasons, left a bit of a cliffhanger.
6) The Bletchley Circle (and The Bletchley Circle - San Francisco) follows a group of ex WW2 analysts and pattern crackers, who recognize a trend with a recent spree of murders, and attempt to help the police solve them. 2 seasons of Bletchley Circle, (3 and 4 episodes), and one season of 8 episodes for the San Francisco spin-off.
7) The Catch, which follows the attempts of a security consultant of finding the man that conned her out of her life savings. 2 seasons.
8) The Librarians, in which we follow the attempts of the titular librarians to collect and contain the various magical artifacts that threaten the earth. 3 movies and 4 seasons following the movies, so even though there is a lot of fantasy and magic, you can take a look at the first movie(s) and see if it's worth watching.
9) The Little Drummer Girl, mini series adaptation of the book by John Le Carre. 6 episodes
10) White Collar, where a convicted con-man assists the FBI's white collar division, while also working on his one long con. 6 seasons.
11) X Company, where we follow a group of Canadians spies during WW2. 3 seasons.

Summaries could probably be better, but there are quite a few shows, and has been some time since I watched them. Tried to go with finished series, though I do have a few more suggestions of series that haven't finished yet (to my knowledge at least).

Another massive list, thank you! And I appreciate the summaries. Also, not sure how many of these are available so I'll have to check. The only one that we've watched from that lot is Designated Survivor and we kinda lost interest midway through season 2. I think we were expecting something a bit more like 24 and it ended up having more focus on the politics. Will definitely check the others out though! Thanks again!

Hopefully there are a few that you can find and watch that both you and your wife will enjoy.

Let me add a few more suggestions

12) American Gods. Based on the comics by Neil Gaiman, it is the story of Shadow Moon and the role he plays in the conflict (soon to be war) between the Old Gods and the New Gods. Modern day America, though may have quite a bit more fantasy and magic than your wife would like. 2 seasons so far.
13) Archer. Animated, we follow a parody of an international man of mystery, and the troubles of his parent (or more specifically, mother) agency. Humor is weird, and you either love it or hate it. Later seasons do deviate quite a bit from the modern era cold war like setting, but they do provide an excuse for even more antics. 10 short seasons so far.
14) Blindspot. A woman is found in the middle of Times Square, her whole body covered in tattoos, and her memory wiped. The tattoos seem to be clues towards crimes that will happen in the near future, so a team of FBI agents try to make sense of what's happening. If you can accept the whole premise as fun, even though it is highly improbable, you will have some enjoyable episodes. It may start to drag later on though, yet it tries its best not to. 4 seasons so far.
15) Blood and Treasure, more or less a series that wants to be Indiana Jones. FBI agent and a thief (excuse me, a master thief) attempt to find Cleopatra's Sarcophagus before a terrorist does. Silly funny romp that doesn't take itself that seriously. Single season.
16) Bodyguard. UK series. Richard Madden (Robb Stark) stars as a war veteran suffering from PTSD serving as a protection officer for a member of the British Parliament, whose politics he doesn't agree with. Single season, 6 episodes.
17) Cobra Kai. The Karate Kid, 30 years later. 2 seasons so far.
18) Condor. Based on the book "Six Days of the Condor", and the film adaptation of it "Three Days of the Condor". A CIA analyst notices some irregularities, but before he's able to do something about them, his whole office is killed in an attack by a team of hitmen. Single season so far.
19) Curfew. In the near future, a curfew is in effect over the United Kingdom (and possibly the rest of the world) due to a virus that turns people into zombies (or near enough). Once a year, a race takes place during the curfew, with the winning team gaining passage to an island free of the infection. If you ignore the horrendous special effects in the car chase of the first episode, it is a short (8 episodes) and enjoyable series. One season so far.
20) Deep State. A retired MI6 officer is called back when his son's team (also an MI6 agent) is killed by a traitor in the team. But not all is as it seems. 2 seasons so far.
21) Hanna. A CIA officer raises his little girl in the woods, knowing that both he and her are marked for capture, if not death, should they surface again. After 15 years, their enemies catch wind of them again, and the hunt is on. Based on the 2011 film of the same name. 1 season so far.
22) Jett. World class thief Daisy "Jett" Kowalski is fresh out of prison, and tries to continue her life, caring for her daughter, while her former associates wish for her to continue working with them. 1 season so far.
23) Killing Eve. An MI5 analyst (Sandra Oh) is hunting a shadowy female assassin (Jodie Comer), but the two women soon start obsessing over each other. 2 seasons so far.
24) Killjoys. Bounty hunters in space. 5 seasons, last episode aired this last week.

Second part of the list also grows long, so I'll stop it here. Still a dozen or so more suggestions. Do tell me if they are welcome, or if they are too overbearing.

Great, thank you! Not sure I'll find the time to watch everything but I plan to make a short list for the wife and the rest will go on my personal list. Happy to get more recommendations if you're willing to spare the time. I can see that you are passionate about all of this :)

Heh, well, twice in the last 3 months or so I had friends ask me about what to watch, so I had some practice in giving short summaries :)

On to the third part of the list then.

25) Line of Duty. UK Internal Affairs. Quite a bit different from the US police procedures we mostly see on the television, though that does depend on what airs where you are. 5 seasons, loosely interconnected.
26) Origin. An earth like planet has been discovered, and a group of people is sent there to colonize it. As it is a one way trip, and they won't be meeting one another before reaching the planet, no info about them is recorded on the craft, so they all have a clean slate to begin a new life. When they wake up though, the journey still hasn't ended, and it seems like something else came on board the ship as well. Single season, just saw that it was cancelled, semi-decent spot to end it. Happy to give more info, but would be going too close to spoilers.
27) Pennyworth. The origins of Wayne's butler. London, circa 1960s, though a slightly different earth (as is usually the case with the comics). Currently airs the first season.
28) Project Blue Book. Based on the real life project blue book, we follow the investigations of a USAF captain and an astrophysics professor into the various UFO reports in the early 1950s. While one would expect that the answers would be clear, it's a History Channel show, which means aliens. Or not. Single season so far, though renewed for a second as well.
29) Snatch. Bunch of young scammers end up with a truck full of gold bullion, and they try to see how they'll be able to take advantage of their good fortune. Said fortune though may not be so good, since quite a few other people are looking for that gold. 2 Seasons, decent ones if you liked the film of the same name, but may be hit or miss otherwise.
30) Strike Back. Small military unit, part of the British Defence Intelligence Service is trying to stop various nefarious plots. Usually a specific plot per season (no villain of the week), relatively short seasons (first season is 6 episodes, rest of them are 10 episodes), but quite a bit of attention to details. Won't tell you that it will surpass 24 as your favorite series, but will hopefully give it a run for its money. 7 seasons so far, waiting on the 8th and last.
31) The Magicians. Yes, you said no magic, but I'd say it's worth it. A depressed graduate student (and amateur magician), obsessed with a series of book about a magical world, finds out that magic is real when he is accepted and enrolled in Brakebills University of Magical Pedagogy to be trained as a magician. While at first everything seems peachy, even if the courses are hard, soon enough a threat appears. While it may sound quite a bit like Harry Potter, it does turn darker quite soon, and even darker later on. First of the 4 seasons should be on Netflix, so you can take a look.
32) The Rookie. A 45 year old man, recently divorced moves to LA to become a police officer. After graduating the academy, he is the oldest rookie on the force, and tries his best to navigate the difficult straits of the job, along with an openly hostile watch commander who thinks that it's just a mid-life crisis. Main reason I always recommend this show is Nathan Fillion, so your mileage may vary. Second season is set to start sometime next week.
33) The Strain. When an international flight lands at JFK International Airport and all contact is lost, the CDC is called to investigate. Everyone on the plane is found dead, except 4 people who have mysteriously survived. While the CDC is trying to control the situation, an elderly man approaches them and tells them that the bodies must be burned, and nothing should be allowed to leave the airport. This is a vampire story, but written in a procedural, CSI-like style. Based on the books by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. 4 Seasons in total, 46 episodes.
34) Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. Yet another attempt to bring Jack Ryan to the screen, though the second one I enjoyed (first one was The Hunt for Red October). If you enjoy the Jack Ryan books, you will probably enjoy the show. If you don't, then you may, or may not enjoy it. One season so far, two more incoming.
35) Wynonna Earp. The heirs of Wyatt Earp have always being haunted by revenants, the souls of those outlaws Wyatt had killed. But those are not the only problems plaguing the Ghost River Triangle. Based on the comics of the same name, it's a lovely romp of zombies, Wild West and gunslinger culture. 3 seasons so far, with a fourth coming mid 2020.
36) Year of the Rabbit. An absurd and ridiculous Victorian era police show, that will either cause you to laugh or wish me dead for suggesting it. Single season of 6 episodes, each about 25 minutes.

Tried going only with series no one else suggested, and tried skipping series that were cancelled and left us with a cliffhanger. Can add those as well, but assuming you manage to watch one series per week, you're set for the next 8 months or so. And if you are indeed able to do that, you may have too much spare time on your hands ;)
