I recently finished watching Game of Thrones with my wife. I’ve watched it before but once my wife gets over the shock / disappointment from season 8, we’ll need a new series to watch in the evenings.

I’ll watch pretty much anything but my wife is not big into fantasy / magic stuff. She just about managed with the dragons and white walkers in GOT because she was so engaged with the story. Anyone have any recommendations? We have Netflix and HBO. No spoilers please.

All aboard! The train has reached it's destination and all keys have been sent. Congrats to all the winners. Thank you to everyone that made suggestions for shows! We have enough to keep us busy for a long time now.

A superb series with shorter episodes would be The Office.
You can take a look at my list on trakt aswell if you're interested. Most of the stuff on there got mentioned already, but I think some of it wasn't :)

Have tried watching the English version of the office with my wife and she wasn't convinced. Maybe she'd prefer the American version. Not sure. Will check out your list. Thanks a lot!

Well, I don't know how much you're into animated stuff ( in this case not particularly Anime, but more so cartoons )

If so, I can recommend Love Death and Robots, it's on Netflix and consists of 18 stories from different types of stuff, from Sci-fi to post-apo and thiller type of thing. There were few fantasy-like ones, but overall it's still worth a watch. Music for this show is absolutely mesmerizing.

From non-animated stuff, Iron Fist is something my parents enjoyed and it was very well made production-wise, tho it is a bit of fantasy, so might not go with your wife. (Fantasty - action)
Punisher was something I enjoyed personally and where as first season was better than the second, I can still recommend it. (Gore, action, punishment 👀)
Altered Carbon was a recommendation from my older brother and it's seemed amazing to me. (Mostly sci-fi)
Limitless series is great to watch if you enjoyed the movie with the same title. (Sci-fi with the pill? With a bit of something else, but that would be a spoiler ^.^)
There's Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch which is always nice to see if you're into crime-solving stuff.

And as for stuff that I personally want to watch, Money Heist seems to be getting praise from my friends, so might give that a look myself.

Here's the links:
https://www.netflix.com/title/80174608 Love Death and Robots
https://www.netflix.com/title/80002612 Iron Fist
https://www.netflix.com/title/80117498 Punisher
https://www.netflix.com/title/80097140 Altered Carbon
https://www.netflix.com/title/80065182 Limitless
https://www.netflix.com/title/70202589 Sherlock
And https://www.netflix.com/title/80192098 Money Heist

Hope that helps, even if a little bit :)

That definitely helps, thanks for all the suggestions! I personally love cartoons, and Love Death and Robots sounds very interesting. Will def check that one out. The sci-fi / action series are to my taste but not sure about my wife. Will add them to my personal watch list :)

I'm not sure if they'll fall into the category of Fantasy/Magic, but I've really enjoyed both Legion and Preacher, two comic book shows that are a bit outside the mainstream, and very quirky (Preacher is hilarious, and Legion is a bit mind-bending). Preacher's ratings are pretty low, but I'm pretty sure it's because people get their religious panties all in a bunch, and give it spite-reviews because it lampoons their sacred cow.

If you like Sci-Fi, you can't go wrong with The Expanse, though you'll need Amazon Prime for the newer episodes, since they took it over from SyFy.

Another possible reason for the low ratings of Preacher is the fact that it deviates a lot from the comics. I do recall a conversation I had back when the first two episodes had aired when someone was calling it an abomination because it didn't stay true to the comics.
Then again, The Boys also deviated quite a bit from the comics, and I'm not sure if it has similarly low ratings or not.

Not sure about comic book stuff for my wife, but will check them out for myself. Thank you. The Expanse looks great. Definitely on the list :)

Watch the first two seasons of The Prison Break.
Other recommendations: Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, IT Crowd, Silicon Valley, Fargo, American Horror Story (every season tells a new story), Band of Brothers

After making these lists, I've realized I watch too much TV.

Netflix:

  • American Crime Story (season 1 is on Netflix)
  • American Vandal (hilarious, deadpan mockumentary series)
  • Better Call Saul
  • BoJack Horseman
  • Black Mirror (a grab bag of quality; some episodes are great, others not so much)
    • My favorite episodes: White Christmas, San Junipero, Black Museum, The Entire History of You, Nosedive, White Bear, Hated in the Nation, Men Against Fire, Be Right Back
  • Breaking Bad
  • Daredevil
  • House of Cards (first 4 seasons; the 5th season is okay; season 6 is supposed to suck, so I haven't watched it)
  • Jessica Jones (first 2 seasons; the 3rd season is terrible)
  • Mad Men
  • The OA (such a weird, nutty show, but I like it)
  • The Office
  • Planet Earth, Planet Earth II, The Blue Planet, Frozen Planet (if you're into nature docs)
  • The Punisher
  • Stranger Things
  • Twin Peaks (a cult classic; whatever you do, don't waste your time with the awful 3rd season that came out on Showtime a couple of years ago)
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (first 3 seasons are good; the last season is kinda meh)
  • Wild Wild Country (crazy docuseries about a cult that moved from India to land they bought in Oregon)

HBO:

  • Curb Your Enthusiasm
  • Extras (hilarious show that ended too soon)
  • Insecure
  • The Jinx
  • Rome
  • True Detective (I've only watched season 1 and going to watch season 3 soon; season 2 is supposed to be terrible, but you can skip it because it's an anthology series)
  • Westworld (a great mind-bending sci-fi show)

Dont waste your time with the season 3 of true detective. Its isnt much better than 2.
About punisher, is it worth watching considering i love dark stories but i hate superheroes? Does it feel like avengers?

Good to know about True Detective.

Punisher is nothing like the Avengers. There are no superheroes or supervillains, no one with special powers. It is also very violent and bloody at times.

Black Mirror for sure! It's both scary and yet fascinating (sometimes in a morbid kind of way) at the same time.

I also love anything CSI-related - not sure if you or your wife are into that though. If so, I would recommend Bones, Castle, The Mentalist, Limitless (I'm not sure I should put this here though - it's not really CSI), and Criminal Minds. There are probably a lot more that I can recommend but these are among my all-time favs :P

Sherlock Holmes - both the British mini-series and also the American/modern version (which is called Elementary).

For superhero stuff, Jessica Jones/Daredevil for the "darker" version and The Flash if you enjoy something "lighter".

Leverage - It falls under the "heist thriller" genre I think?

In your last GA, I've added a +1 for Warehouse 13 and also recommended the Librarians. They aren't exactly full-blown fantasy, plus they can be quite amusing, so maybe your wife might warm up to these great lower-budget shows :)

Note that I haven't watched a TV show in quite a while now, but these are the ones that had stuck around in my head

I tend to gravitate toward fantasy and sci-fi stories myself, so it'll be hard to name series of other genres :P Therefore, I'll just go ahead and list some titles that came to mind & haven't been mentioned yet.
The Good Place - a really good comedy (with short episodes, so easy to watch) and I believe the level of supernatural will be fine for your wife's taste.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - maybe for your private list, as it's completely a fantasy story. Rather light and comedic at most times.
The 4400 - like a superior Heroes. Too bad it got cancelled and the story had to be abruptly wrapped up.
What We Do in the Shadows - they made a series based on the film's success. Haven't seen it yet, but I guess it's great. Wouldn't expect less, to be honest.

I'll update my post when I think of something else :)

Thank you for a train. I do not have time for many TV series, as I used to have, but there are a few I remember fondly. Battlestar Galactica may start like a run-of-the-mill sci-fi, but it is so much more. The man in a High caste is one of the best unexpected surprises. And from the more real one, I would probably recommend the Mad Men. But there is so much more out there.

And of course there are some nice things like Black Mirror, BoJack Horsemen and my guilty pleasure, Archer. Anyway, I hope that you will find something that you both like. :)

Came to list a few including Black Mirror, Vikings, Breaking Bad and a few more that's all been mentioned already. To also add something new to this, maybe try Suits. There is also a similar one with a female protagonist that includes more about the character's private life The Good Wife
