A recently closed thread suggested adding a "thanks" button. While the thread was justly closed, since the vast majority of people responding obviously didn't even read the message (hey, I know I didn't), I figured I should just take the design to the next step:

When you enter a giveaway, the system should check if you already posted a message on that giveaway, and if not, post a thank you message in your name. This message could be customised so that you could for example write:

%GAME% is at the top of my wish list. Thank you so much %USERNAME% for giving me the chance to win it.

In addition when a user enters a giveaway and then leaves the page without entering the giveaway, an alternate message could be optionally (user configurable) posted, such as:

Thanks %USERNAME% for the giveaway, but I'm not entering at this time.

(This message shouldn't be construed as advocating this feature, merely as exercise in feature design. Please keep comments to possibilities of enhancing this feature further.)

Edit:

When I created this thread I wondered how many will read the last paragraph (the one now right above the "Edit:" line) and play along. I thought I'll reward all those who do with a private giveaway. Unfortunately no one did. The only one who even went part way to discuss related features was cordateflame.

This is not a feature I'd really want. I use the script that filters out generic thanks and I love it. I miss it when I'm on a PC when it's not installed. But I like the idea of thinking creatively even about ideas I don't fully agree with. This idea could have been expanded to randomly select messages from a list of several (to break monotony) and to add special messages for specific games ("thanks for Skyrim").

Since nobody wants to play with me (boohoo) I'll close this thread soon (where "soon" means some time today).

Seems the system is malfunctioning. I wasn't planning to comment here, I just entered to check what's going on.

But... Would there be a function for the obligatory troll response?

Ie. I want to say "thanks for Halo Reach" on a CS:GO giveaway.

Not a bad idea, but doesn't that take out the point of thanking people? Taking the time to type out "Thanks!" when clicking the "Enter to win!" button?

I have an even better idea: How about let's dump this idea and never mention it again

And I go one step further and suggest a new entry system; If someone doesn't have a game, system automatically adds him to the giveaway, therefore we won't need any points etc.

And maybe the next step could be the system itself can play that game, finish it on its own so we won't have to.

(Seriously I think it is a bad idea because if a person wants to say "thanks" he will, no need to push him/her or do that automatically. Most of the people here (at least the ones i checked) knows each other -by this site ofc- and they have quite funny conversations over giveaways. And turning it to some kind of robotic copies of some "thank" messages seems very bad for me. -no offense please-)

Sounds interesting but it seems like it'd just allow more leechers.

An automatic thank you would take all of the meaning out of thanking someone for doing a giveaway...wtf is the point in that...

Hate the idea. All it would do is needlessly increase the size of the database while adding nothing of substance. The site already runs slow at times and I know optimization is constantly being done to improve it. Something like this would drag the site to its knees.
