I think when people take a look back on something they've done, they might regret. Maybe it will happen to me, but not right now.
So YES is my answer!

I'm in the same boat, was on dial up at the time (live in the middle of nowhere), had no interest in digital distribution, and at the time Steam was a real pos, crashes and system hanging were common. Nowadays Steam is my go to choice for all things PC gaming related, funny how things can change over time.

I got black ops which made me use steam. I liked steam and PC gaming, so I ended up switching to PC gaming.

I joined Steam when I bought the Orange Box in 2008, mainly because of Portal.

Had to, or else I couldn't play the Orange Box games. I didn't have internet nor know about Steam's existence at the time so I got angry and confused when it said I couldn't play my games without Steam installed. Never got to play them until a month later.

Me too! Only difference is that my internet was due for activation and was activated luckily the next day after I bought Orange Box.

Yes, it was. Even though I had the CD, I had to download the Steam version. It took more than a week at 8-12kbps because I only had internet for a couple of hours a day. After that, it was frustrating to fight with it to keep offline mode working all the time, since I couldn't keep the internet on due to needing the phone line. Steam is incredibly annoying if your conditions aren't right, and it was much worse back then. (I love Steam now with its current interface and my current internet connection.)
EDIT: Yes, this was in 2006. New Mexico has a lot in common with the third world.

Team Fortress Classic was getting rid of WON support and moving on to Steam, I held out until the very end but was forced to make the switch. I still miss WON as far as TFC support goes, still a lot better than Steam. But fortunately, Steam makes up for it for being amazing everywhere else.

Bought a physical copy of the Orange Box when it was released, so I had to redeem it using Steam.
No regrets purchasing that for ~$50
