Metro: Exodus arriving 2018! Just found out (yes, I'm a bit slow... Just let it go)!
I'm really hyped for this read: hyped as fuck, seeing as I really enjoyed the last two installments in the series, and have spent many hours down in the Metro on my PC as well as having read the first two books.

Read info and watch the E3 gameplay trailer. And when you watch, you crank that shit up loud, because the Metro soundtrack is awesome!

Vampus, thanks for the reminder: http://store.steampowered.com/app/412020/Metro_Exodus/

Books are (as far as I know) Metro 2033, Metro 2034, and Metro 2035 by Dmitry Glukhovsky.
There are some other novels and stories and a DLC comic if you own Last Light - Thank you gegeru for the tip:

What is your take on it all? Yay or Nay?

Here's another trailer, but from Last Light. They have done some good ones for the series, but this one gives me freaking chills:

No DLC:s or season passes on games so far? At least not on Steam, couldn't say about consoles...
Only the REDUX remakes, those of course could be argued were perhaps not necessary.

Metro: Last Light had a bunch of DLCs and a season pass.

That's weird though, because I see no DLC:s or Season Pass when I look on Steam.
Hmmm, was that for the non-redux version maybe? Because I cannot see that anymore, I only see the redux, and maybe in that it's all included. Sneaky Steam.

You should, it's better than Last Light. More scary in my opinion, but perhaps that is a first view opinion only.

Agreed! Metro 2033 was absolutely amazing. LL was a step down in my opinion.

Even though I read only the Glukhovsky's books, anyone read the Metro universe ones?

I own them both on console and PC but haven't found the time to play them yet. Maybe I'll play all three at once, when Metro: Exodus gets launched. I've heard many good things about them and I've also seen some gameplay footage so more of "that stuff" is definitely a good thing as long as they don't screw it up.

That's always going to be the worry, isn't it, that they might screw it up?

What worries me is this (tiny itsy-bitsy spoiler warning):
Metro is the worst kind of rail shooter - you go in a straight line where they want you to go and nowhere else. Now, they get away with it because you are confined in the Metro after all, there is only only one way to go, and that's to follow the rail. Actually in Metro, it's part of the atmosphere instead of being suffocating. Well ok yes, it is suffocating, but that's what makes it so atmospheric...

But the above ground sections of the game were at once the worst, and the best. Best because when you finally came out of the tunnels, out from the oppression of the earth above you (and all that shit you had to go through to get out), and come out into this beautiful post-apocalyptic world where more (really, really, really fun) shit is going to hit was awesome.
The Librarians, oh, my god, the librarians. You'll love them, because they'll make you shit yourself, 'nuff said.
But it was also the absolute worst sections of the game as the topside was just as on-the-rail-corridored as the below tunnels were. And up here it didn't work so well, not so easy for them to get away with. I forgave it, because the action was heavily on, and the sections were short so it sorta fitted in with the feel of the rest of the game.

But what if Exodus is all like that? Metro below was unique. Metro above, have a whole bunch of good games to compete with, and there are so many other shitty above-ground post-apocalyptic games out there. I hope Exodus will not prove to be one of them, they will have to find a balance between story, tempo, and exploration that will ring true to the franchise. And that will not be easy.

A shooter is almost always a bit rail-y. Some of the most successful ones are quite rail-y and we accept that, they need to be to keep the tempo up. But some shooters have been quite open world, and will let you take your own time, and have gotten away with it (I'm thinking S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for example). We'll just have to wait and see where they take it and keep our fingers crossed, that's all.

The atmosphere is all that matters. More often than not an open world approach is met with failure because of the overall complexity that implies a lot of trade-offs including shallowness and a lot of filler content. It's very hard, although not impossible, to get the atmosphere right in an open world.

I think certain restrictions can be beneficial for the overall experience as long as the story and the characters make up for the lack of extensive freedom. After all, a story must follow its course in order to have any significance, otherwise it's just a bunch of pointless missions.

Last year I tried playing Metro 2033 (non redux) but the UI and some small things turned me off. After seeing the issues I had were rectified with the redux versions, I stopped playing and waited for both Metro Redux games to land in a cheap bundle.

Jokes on me. I went broke, haha. So, thanks a bunch for this mate.

Finished both the last month. LL for the first time, 2033 for the third time. The move out of the metro will be interesting, it will definitely lose what made metro special the metro tunnels and stations.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And that's both exciting and worrisome. But I also think it would have been hard to do a third one below, If the difference between 2033 and LL is anything to go on, a third one might have become too watered down. Let's hope they get it right!

Yeah, in comparison 2033 is inspired, and LL is just more of the same with something missing. 2033 is a story you experience, LL is a shooter you play in the same place.

There's no preorder button yet... here's another poll idea for you:

  • How many of you would preorder it vs those who'd wait for release vs the Morgan style lovers?

I (almost) never pre-purchase, too many games have been bad but then you've already payed for it, shitty system that fools the young and inexperienced buyers. But I say almost never because sometimes it's hard to control the stupid pre-purchase wannabee fanboy that resides in my heart.

nah, wouldn't say that much, you know there's just a handful (or even less, sometimes) devs who deserve every penny and you know for sure you can -perhaps against the common better judgement- preorder from them and you most likely not only you won't crash and burn but also enjoy a decent PC port and support those whom truly deserve it.

Still, refund capabilities are helpful but shouldn't be exploited or risk finding out how quickly it may dissapear, also it's unfortunately severely limited to 14 days even for preorders (I think it starts counting after release tho)

True enough, that's what I mean that the system mostly hurts young and inexperienced buyers, that haven't yet amassed knowledge about certain developers and producers.

I google translated ПОВОЛЖЬЕ, and it gave me Vovolzhye.
So I googled that, but can't find it at all. However Google tries to correct it to Povolzhye (Volga region). Correct?
Can you tell me where you got this information?

On the map in the trailer (around 2:20) there is a word: бaтapeйкa. What does this mean? Google translate tells me tap-tap, and I don't think that's correct...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"бaтapeйкa" - small battery, accumulator like AA or AAA battery(its shown Nine-volt battery in the trailer)
Поволжье - it is the Volga region, which sitiuated(mostly) on the south west of Russia, but some parts are close to central regions including Moscow and even Ural Mountains, it literally means On Volga(river)
but, depending on the map it is not real existing place
About information, most russian mass media wrote about this fact, if u will look attentively at the map(for example here https://youtu.be/fbbqlvuovQ0?t=2m24s) u can see a caption(Волга) on the bottom side, which means -Volga (river), so all territories adjacent to this river are The Volga region.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ah, so it is Volga. And as I understand you the Volga region is real, but the 'Volga' on the map in the trailer is not real?
Thank you!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

yes, (Корсаково, Запущенский лес, Ранжурово, остров Круглый) - all captions on the map are fictional, except "Волга" and "Воложка"
btw, u can notice several mountains in the trailer and its very odd, because according to map this is totally plain territory

It does. I really liked 2033 - it was turn-on-the-lights-cozy-scary to read. 2034 was a more straightforward book with a hell of an ending.
2035 (that apparently exists according to the Exodus trailer) I haven't read.

Are there anymore books?
