Update: ALL GAs ARE COMPLETE AND HAVE BEEN SENT OUT!

But, the dungeon is still open in case anyone wants to play it just for fun. :)

Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this a great event. I think that there was enough enthusiasm around this that I'll do another one in the future. Stay tuned!

Yes, another GA event is here (as well as another completely skewed, useless, smart-@ssed, one-sided poll ๐Ÿ˜œ)!

Intro (What this is and how it came about)

So, after the holidays, I got to thinking about my library of keys that I have laying around, and decided that instead of just doing random trains and things that I would attempt to do several thematical (which the dictionary is telling me is not a word, but kiss my butt, dictionary, I'm using it and making it a word -- so there!) events in 2019. The short list that I cooked up looks like this:

  • Adventure Game Train
  • RPG Train
  • Trash Tornado (number whatever...I think it'll be the fourth one?)
  • Couch Games Train
  • Puzzle Train
  • Racing Train
  • HOG of HOGs
  • Weeb Trash Train #2
  • Pew Pew Pew Train
  • WTF Train

There may be others or some of these may never happen, but that's what I have on my radar for this year. In any case, you can see that my initial assumption was that most of these would be trains. But then I got to thinking about how fun the last Trash Tornadoโ„ข was, and thought through some similar concepts for the HOG of HOGs, and went, "wouldn't it be cool to do some different things with these other events too?" And then I answered myself. "Yes, let's do that!"

And so, the Adventure Game Dungeon (which replaces the Adventure Game Train) is the first event in the series. I decided to learn how to use SErVER51's Dungeon Sandbox, which has been the basis for several events around here. It took me a couple of evenings of playing with it to get most of the basics, and I still haven't tapped its full potential by any means, but I was able to create a pretty serviceable dungeon over the course of a few nights of free time.

Here's how it works

  • You must be at least level 2 to participate in the GAs (but you can play the dungeon if you'd like no matter what your level). Don't complain, buster -- that's a pretty low bar
  • There are GAs scattered through the dungeon, mostly on the walls (they'll usually read "Enter" or "Win!" or "Enter to win!")
  • You need to explore the dungeon to find them all
  • Some parts of the dungeon (most of them, actually) are only accessible by finding keys to unlock doors, magic items to activate teleporters, switches to raise gates, objects to give to NPCs, or riddles to solve
  • The deeper you explore in the dungeon, the better the GAs become

Details and what's in here

All of the GAs in the dungeon are adventure games of some kind. None should be full-on RPG games (after all, there's going to be another event for that), which mostly means point-and-click adventures, but there are certainly a few first-person adventure games or adventure-puzzler games, etc. They're basically anything that I deemed should fall under the "adventure" umbrella. If you don't agree with the inclusion of any game, that's your right, but believe me when I say that I don't care. It's my event, bubba, and I make the rules around here. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘…

There are 62 GAs in total throughout the dungeon. As mentioned earlier, the more obstacles you pass, the better on average that the GAs become. There are two non-bundled GAs right before the exit to encourage you to finish the entire dungeon. Don't pass them up in your excitement of having found the exit!

The GAs will run for two weeks, meaning that they end on the evening of February the 8th (US Central time). I'll leave the dungeon open after the GAs are done in case anyone wants to continue exploring or use it for ideas for their own event.

Advice

  • Step on every square of every room -- the automap only adds tiles for square you've actually stood upon, not everything you see, so if you want an accurate map (and I have this dungeon pretty well intertwined, so believe me that having an accurate map will help), you need to run around the entire room when you enter one. You can't die, so there's no danger in cruising quickly through the whole room.
  • Doors show up as gaps on the map -- this can be kind of confusing, but based upon how doors work, they create a blank square on the map in between the two areas that they connect. Keep this in mind when you're examining your map and trying to determine which way to go.
  • Sign in through Steam -- you can play anonymously, but if you want your progress to be saved (and the dungeon's pretty big, so let me tell you that, yes, this is something you definitely want to do), you'll need to be signed in
  • Give yourself at least an hour or two to go through the whole thing -- nothing in here is very complicated, but there's quite a bit of ground to cover, so be ready to invest some time to get to the best GAs.
  • Leave no stone unturned -- I didn't put in any completely useless mazes or anything like that. So, be sure to go down every hallway and into every room...sometimes that annoying, windy, seems-to-go-nowhere passage has a GA at the end of it. Look at every wall.
  • Consider making your own paper map -- there's not a way to add notes or anything to the mini map in the Dungeon Sandbox, so you may want to dig out the graph paper and make your own map so that you can make notes as to where NPCs, teleporters, etc., are located.

Disclaimers and stuff

  • This isn't my tool, I just used it to create the dungeon, so if it goes down or something, please let me know (and I'll tell SErVER51), but also understand that there's nothing I can do about it
  • Also, this is my first dungeon I've made with the tool, so I'm totally open to suggestions...but also don't be a douchebag if you don't find it fun. Making this stuff is a lot of work, and if you think you can create something better, then awesome, I would honestly love to see it and learn from it. But anyone acting like a tool will get banned from the dungeon.
  • You must explore the dungeon to enter the GAs. Do not share links with friends. Anyone involved in a leak (I'm only mentioning this because a couple of friends' events had this problem lately), either giving or receiving links to GAs will be treated like the cheater they are and blacklisted for life.
  • Most of the keys came from HB, IG, or Fanatical and should all be good. One or two came from Otaku and we all know the drama that is going on there right now. If that happens, please agree ahead of time to delete the GA in that scenario. But don't worry, I will give you some kind of consolation prize worth the same amount as the game in the GA (you'll likely have your pick of several options). I never leave anyone hanging. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
  • A million thanks for SErVER51 for creating something cool like this so that the community here at SG has yet another option to do something creative, different, and fun. ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿป

Ok, I think that covers it. Enough of my wordiness. It's time for you to ENTER THE DUNGEON

Have fun, and good luckโ—

EDIT/NOTE:
Several people had reported having issues with a couple of graphics not appearing correctly: the red-and-white "enter to win" sign and the copper flowers on the walls (those people probably couldn't tell what they were at the time, but those clip-art pics are the culprits). I've re-hosted these such that the references to them should no longer be a problem, and have walked the entire dungeon and (I think) replaced all occurrences of these particular bits of clip art. If anyone is continuing to have issues or finds any other graphics that appear to be missing/not loading, please let me know. And please open the mini-map and take note of your coordinate position as well as the compass direction (for any wall-based objects) so that I can jump to that point on the map and address those objects quickly. Thanks!

BTW, you should see GA graphics (mostly grouped into common areas of the map) in the following patterns: "enter to win" blue-to-green fade circle, "enter to win" red and white sign, "Enter to win" paperboy, "Enter" blue splat, "WIN!" cloud/explosion, "Enter" brown sign, "Enter to Win!" stars and blue circle, No-bundle sign.

Is there any way, for future dungeons, to make the walls appear on the map?

That's a question for SErVER51. But I've already made a few suggestions for how to improve the mini-map. Most of mine had to do with displaying where event objects had been placed when I'm in creator mode, but there's no reason that this couldn't be extended to play mode as well for anything that the player has already discovered. You should add your suggestion on the dungeonsandbox.com web site. SErVER51 is very good about listening to suggestions...it's just a matter of whether he has time to work on them or not. :)

Are the map tile textures yours or inbuilt ones? If they're yours, you could always add extras to include a wall/door on different edges of the texture, and just rotate as needed. If they're inbuilt ones, you wouldn't think it would take SErVER51 much to add an option for a map tile to have a flag to add a decal to the edge(s) or main face to display walls/doors/items on the map.

Dungeon builders have no control whatsoever over the mini-map. But several of us have added suggestions on how to make it better. I'd like for the walls and floor to not only have a different color/shading if they have an object tied to them, but also get info on the object if I float my mouse cursor over it. But hey, one step at a time, right? :)

I finally finished the dungeon, that was quite the slog... Fortunately I managed to find all 63 games so that's good.

And now I have an Excel treasure map. :p

I noticed that the Enter key on the numpad doesn't work on the password fields; hopefully this is of some use for those that still want to run the dungeon.

Thanks for another fun even, Grez!

Sorry for the delay, I didn't manage to enter the dungeon last weekend.
I tried my best today ... awesome!! Dungeon Master feeling (well without being killed :)
Kudos also to the makers of the Dungeon Sandbox, I couldn't try on the christmas event bc /.ed.
I am not sure but I think did crawl about a quarter of the dungeon (est is bc of no of giveaways I encounterd).

"Consider making your own paper map" ... that brought so much memories back (I have a tears in my eyes).

For the creators of the Dungeon Sandbox: I would like that the map is zoomable or movable or greater than 16x16, hey no need to be that oldschool :).

Congrats on finishing it. I tried not to be too cruel with the best GAs at the end. They should have been in plain site as a reward for finding all of the keys/items and solving the riddles. :)

You should hang in there...all of the best GAs are near the end (including the two non-bundled ones). It saves your place (assuming that you signed in), so you can always come back the next day and finish up.

Nice! Congrats!

I've learned a couple of new things about the tool (and SErVER51 has been adding a couple of new features...probably more over the next month or two) so that I can make an even better one next time.

I want to figure out how Treasures feature works. My stats said 0/0 treasures at the end.

Yeah, I've asked about it...turns out that instead of putting GAs on the walls, I could hit objects scattered all about the dungeon and, if I give them a URL (instead of a text-label name), they will be automatically defined as treasures. They would all go into inventory and you could do all of the GAs at the end.

But 0/0 is correct for this dungeon since I didn't set anything up that way. So you're all good. :)

Doors require either a key or sometimes open with a switch. You'll need to explore thoroughly to locate them.

If the doorway is already black, that means it's open and you can simply click on it to pass through.

Thanks for the dungeon and giveaways!

Got through using the built-in auto map, but yeah definitely recommend making your own.

Improvement suggestions for the auto map:

  • (Automatic) borders for tiles indicating walls, doors, portals. (E.g. coloured lines or using different line styles like dotted, dashed, solid.) This is telling the player whether there's an area which he didn't fully explore yet.
  • Possibility to permanently display the map (while walking). Saves toggling it every 5s.
  • Possibility (for players) to add markers on the auto map. So players can see on the map where they might have to return to later.

Make sure that you give those suggestions to SErVER51...he wrote the engine. I just made a dungeon with it. ๐Ÿ˜€ He has a section on the dungeon sandbox web site for leaving suggestions.

Thanks...I think that there will be another in the future, and I'll try to implement a few more tricky puzzles in that one. Nothing obtuse, mind you...I think things like this should be challenging and fun, but not hit-a-wall-frustrating. That kind of defeats the entire point. :)

Feedback for the creator of the dungeon thing: note-taking is horrid. I've been adding each ga link to my notes and half the time the thing messes up, the cursor jumps to the beginning or end (sometimes while typing), typed characters are immediately deleted, etc. I'm coming to the conclusion that i would be much better off using wordpad or similar.

A suggestion on the links...if you want to look through them later, just click to open each one and save that group of tabs. That way, even if you close your browser, you can come back later and cruise through which GAs you want to enter (or, if it's all of them, it gives you more time to spend your points at your leisure :) ).

I noticed that many people post their Dungeon Sandbox improvement suggestions here: unfortunately, I don't have time to look through the topics of dungeon creators regularly, so if you have a suggestion or idea, please post it the Updates section on the website or in the Dungeon Sandox SG topic - this way I will receive a notification and you can be sure I will see your suggestion and take it into account.
