Update: ALL GAs ARE COMPLETE AND HAVE BEEN SENT OUT!

But, the dungeon is still open in case anyone wants to play it just for fun. :)

Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this a great event. I think that there was enough enthusiasm around this that I'll do another one in the future. Stay tuned!

Yes, another GA event is here (as well as another completely skewed, useless, smart-@ssed, one-sided poll 😜)!

Intro (What this is and how it came about)

So, after the holidays, I got to thinking about my library of keys that I have laying around, and decided that instead of just doing random trains and things that I would attempt to do several thematical (which the dictionary is telling me is not a word, but kiss my butt, dictionary, I'm using it and making it a word -- so there!) events in 2019. The short list that I cooked up looks like this:

  • Adventure Game Train
  • RPG Train
  • Trash Tornado (number whatever...I think it'll be the fourth one?)
  • Couch Games Train
  • Puzzle Train
  • Racing Train
  • HOG of HOGs
  • Weeb Trash Train #2
  • Pew Pew Pew Train
  • WTF Train

There may be others or some of these may never happen, but that's what I have on my radar for this year. In any case, you can see that my initial assumption was that most of these would be trains. But then I got to thinking about how fun the last Trash Tornado™ was, and thought through some similar concepts for the HOG of HOGs, and went, "wouldn't it be cool to do some different things with these other events too?" And then I answered myself. "Yes, let's do that!"

And so, the Adventure Game Dungeon (which replaces the Adventure Game Train) is the first event in the series. I decided to learn how to use SErVER51's Dungeon Sandbox, which has been the basis for several events around here. It took me a couple of evenings of playing with it to get most of the basics, and I still haven't tapped its full potential by any means, but I was able to create a pretty serviceable dungeon over the course of a few nights of free time.

Here's how it works

  • You must be at least level 2 to participate in the GAs (but you can play the dungeon if you'd like no matter what your level). Don't complain, buster -- that's a pretty low bar
  • There are GAs scattered through the dungeon, mostly on the walls (they'll usually read "Enter" or "Win!" or "Enter to win!")
  • You need to explore the dungeon to find them all
  • Some parts of the dungeon (most of them, actually) are only accessible by finding keys to unlock doors, magic items to activate teleporters, switches to raise gates, objects to give to NPCs, or riddles to solve
  • The deeper you explore in the dungeon, the better the GAs become

Details and what's in here

All of the GAs in the dungeon are adventure games of some kind. None should be full-on RPG games (after all, there's going to be another event for that), which mostly means point-and-click adventures, but there are certainly a few first-person adventure games or adventure-puzzler games, etc. They're basically anything that I deemed should fall under the "adventure" umbrella. If you don't agree with the inclusion of any game, that's your right, but believe me when I say that I don't care. It's my event, bubba, and I make the rules around here. 😁👅

There are 62 GAs in total throughout the dungeon. As mentioned earlier, the more obstacles you pass, the better on average that the GAs become. There are two non-bundled GAs right before the exit to encourage you to finish the entire dungeon. Don't pass them up in your excitement of having found the exit!

The GAs will run for two weeks, meaning that they end on the evening of February the 8th (US Central time). I'll leave the dungeon open after the GAs are done in case anyone wants to continue exploring or use it for ideas for their own event.

Advice

  • Step on every square of every room -- the automap only adds tiles for square you've actually stood upon, not everything you see, so if you want an accurate map (and I have this dungeon pretty well intertwined, so believe me that having an accurate map will help), you need to run around the entire room when you enter one. You can't die, so there's no danger in cruising quickly through the whole room.
  • Doors show up as gaps on the map -- this can be kind of confusing, but based upon how doors work, they create a blank square on the map in between the two areas that they connect. Keep this in mind when you're examining your map and trying to determine which way to go.
  • Sign in through Steam -- you can play anonymously, but if you want your progress to be saved (and the dungeon's pretty big, so let me tell you that, yes, this is something you definitely want to do), you'll need to be signed in
  • Give yourself at least an hour or two to go through the whole thing -- nothing in here is very complicated, but there's quite a bit of ground to cover, so be ready to invest some time to get to the best GAs.
  • Leave no stone unturned -- I didn't put in any completely useless mazes or anything like that. So, be sure to go down every hallway and into every room...sometimes that annoying, windy, seems-to-go-nowhere passage has a GA at the end of it. Look at every wall.
  • Consider making your own paper map -- there's not a way to add notes or anything to the mini map in the Dungeon Sandbox, so you may want to dig out the graph paper and make your own map so that you can make notes as to where NPCs, teleporters, etc., are located.

Disclaimers and stuff

  • This isn't my tool, I just used it to create the dungeon, so if it goes down or something, please let me know (and I'll tell SErVER51), but also understand that there's nothing I can do about it
  • Also, this is my first dungeon I've made with the tool, so I'm totally open to suggestions...but also don't be a douchebag if you don't find it fun. Making this stuff is a lot of work, and if you think you can create something better, then awesome, I would honestly love to see it and learn from it. But anyone acting like a tool will get banned from the dungeon.
  • You must explore the dungeon to enter the GAs. Do not share links with friends. Anyone involved in a leak (I'm only mentioning this because a couple of friends' events had this problem lately), either giving or receiving links to GAs will be treated like the cheater they are and blacklisted for life.
  • Most of the keys came from HB, IG, or Fanatical and should all be good. One or two came from Otaku and we all know the drama that is going on there right now. If that happens, please agree ahead of time to delete the GA in that scenario. But don't worry, I will give you some kind of consolation prize worth the same amount as the game in the GA (you'll likely have your pick of several options). I never leave anyone hanging. 👌🏻👍🏻
  • A million thanks for SErVER51 for creating something cool like this so that the community here at SG has yet another option to do something creative, different, and fun. 💥🍻

Ok, I think that covers it. Enough of my wordiness. It's time for you to ENTER THE DUNGEON

Have fun, and good luck❗

EDIT/NOTE:
Several people had reported having issues with a couple of graphics not appearing correctly: the red-and-white "enter to win" sign and the copper flowers on the walls (those people probably couldn't tell what they were at the time, but those clip-art pics are the culprits). I've re-hosted these such that the references to them should no longer be a problem, and have walked the entire dungeon and (I think) replaced all occurrences of these particular bits of clip art. If anyone is continuing to have issues or finds any other graphics that appear to be missing/not loading, please let me know. And please open the mini-map and take note of your coordinate position as well as the compass direction (for any wall-based objects) so that I can jump to that point on the map and address those objects quickly. Thanks!

BTW, you should see GA graphics (mostly grouped into common areas of the map) in the following patterns: "enter to win" blue-to-green fade circle, "enter to win" red and white sign, "Enter to win" paperboy, "Enter" blue splat, "WIN!" cloud/explosion, "Enter" brown sign, "Enter to Win!" stars and blue circle, No-bundle sign.
