As per title, I am looking for a horror film to watch, not necessarily recent, but scary.
Gore is ok, but I'm not a fan of jump scares - those get boring quickly. I am more into unsettling plots and dark or unusual settings.

To give you an idea of what I like, I am a big fan of John Carpenter (The Thing, Price of Darkness, The Fog, Christine...).
So let's see, what are your favourite horror flicks?

And now, for the unrelated GA: 1DyS0 [Level 1+] (ended)
New GA: /PFSnM/

UPDATE: I've watched "Don't Blink" because it was easy to find and cheap (a few pence, second hand of course). 9 for the idea, 5 for the final result. Too many plot holes, I guess that's where people disappeared. :D

UPDATE 2: I have now watched "Jacob's Ladder", wow that was a trip. Very weird film, I think "Hellraiser: Inferno" might have been inspired by it a little, but Jacob's Ladder was deeper, more mysterious and all round much better.

UPDATE 3: Watched "Emergo" (Apartment 143) and May, because I could get them for a few pence :D The first started ok but went downhill quickly, the second is very weird but a bit boring (very well acted, though).

I was going to recommend some old movie by Dario Argento or Mario Bava but I have no idea if there are dubbed/subbed versions of them in your language. Also, they're OLD.

I think Ravenous is one you looking for. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129332/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1457767/ The Conjuring is not bad.
Also there is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1631707/ not a classic horror, but is "I am more into unsettling plots and dark or unusual settings."
something you looking for.

As Above, So Below
Deliver Us from Evil
Mama
Stephen King's Sleepwalkers
The Lost Boys One of my favorite movies of all time.
The Thing (2011) If you haven't seen it, it's sort of a prequel for the 1982 one, I liked it.

Below are the movies I didn't see in the topic yet.

  • Riding the Bullet (2004) - scenario by Stephen King. It's sick but I like it.
  • Storm of the Century (1999) - and again Stephen King. Great plot! 10/10
  • The Others (2001) - another great movie. Not a usual horror, imho. It's has a heavy atmosphere. For me it's scary. If you're going to watch it, watch it till the end. It's important.
  • The Faculty (1998) - it's rather popular and most likely you've seen it, but if you didn't... It's a nice movie.
  • Ghost Ship (2002) - About the lost in the sea (or ocean) big ship and the expedition which found it. If I remember everything correctly

And in the end: What We Do in the Shadows (2014) - funny horror about vampires :) Not really scary, but interesting and uncommon.

Almost forgot about Ghost Ship! In my eyes it's a b-movie, but an enjoyable one. The same director also did Thir13en Ghosts. I didn't like that one as much, but maybe I'm a bit biased because I saw the 1960 original first

Some that I recently watched on Netflix. Nightcrawler is the first movie and it has a pretty unusual and unsetteling plot. The second movie is called Would you Rather, and its mostly about the gore factor.

I know the feeling. The horror movies are getting duller with the overuse of jumpscares. Anyway, here are some suggestions:

  • Severance
  • REC (The spanish original although the american remake Quarantine isn't too bad neither)
  • Open water (not sure if this qualifies as horror but it sure as hell is extremly scary)
  • Cabin in the Woods
