As per title, I am looking for a horror film to watch, not necessarily recent, but scary.
Gore is ok, but I'm not a fan of jump scares - those get boring quickly. I am more into unsettling plots and dark or unusual settings.

To give you an idea of what I like, I am a big fan of John Carpenter (The Thing, Price of Darkness, The Fog, Christine...).
So let's see, what are your favourite horror flicks?

And now, for the unrelated GA: 1DyS0 [Level 1+] (ended)
New GA: /PFSnM/

UPDATE: I've watched "Don't Blink" because it was easy to find and cheap (a few pence, second hand of course). 9 for the idea, 5 for the final result. Too many plot holes, I guess that's where people disappeared. :D

UPDATE 2: I have now watched "Jacob's Ladder", wow that was a trip. Very weird film, I think "Hellraiser: Inferno" might have been inspired by it a little, but Jacob's Ladder was deeper, more mysterious and all round much better.

UPDATE 3: Watched "Emergo" (Apartment 143) and May, because I could get them for a few pence :D The first started ok but went downhill quickly, the second is very weird but a bit boring (very well acted, though).

The Uninvited (2009) with Emily Browning. Not a gory one but suspense & mystery.

When I think more about it, it isn't actually a horror movie, more a thriller. But definitely worth watching.

Pretty decent movie actually. Also my ex stars in it. Not literally, but they are like so similar o.o

I recommend The skeleton key, it's a highly underrated film. No jump scares and no gore, just some mystery and mysticism. I hope you like it.

Sleepy Hollow? Not sure if it counts as horror, but it has Christopher Walken which surely is horrifying? :P Good film imo.

Amazing to me that Carpenter is responsible for both Christine (which I love) and Prince of Darkness (which I laugh at as boring and tedious)

I liked them both, for different reasons. Very different movies, I agree.

Christine is like a perverse fantasy car for me... I hate the traffic, she'd be an awesome solution.

I am not into horror movies, but I have seen some of course. Once I've been at a friends house and we watched some movies and this guy is all about that stuff. He showed me a movie that really impressed me, maybe you wanna check it out.
It's called Inside. It's about a female intruder that wants to kill someone. In the first half of the movie nothing happens and you only see here for brief seconds in the background sometimes, which is the best part cause it adds tension and the second half is a bit more slasher until the final which is straight-up gore.

I've grown tired of horror movies, probably because there haven't been any decent horror movies recently that I've seen. They all rely on jump scares. I remember watching one of the original Amityville Horror movies as a kid and being scared for weeks.

Rosemary's Baby, The Stepford Wives (the original), Audition, Let The Right One In, Rec, Dumplings, Rampo Noir, The Eye (The original), Orphan, Evil Dead 2, The Babadook, The Thing, Suspiria, Nosferatu (1979), The Omen.

All of them, masterpieces.

I see some people recommended The Ring and The Grudge already, but I highly advise you watch the original Japanese films rather than our US Remakes. Ringu and Ju-on. I'm a bit of a horror fanatic, and some of the best of the "scary" horror movies I've seen are Japanese, not just the kinda silly ultra-gore types. Ringu and Ringu 2 probably top the list for me. Since you mentioned disturbing, I totally advise you check out the film "Audition." It's quite disturbing/unsettling to most people I know.

I recommend Ringu highly because it is atmospheric, rather than the standard jump scare fare we get in the States anymore. If you're either old enough, or enough of a film buff to really know the old Alfred Hitchcock movies, that's how I tend to describe Ringu - It's more about what's not seen, and not known, to drive up the atmosphere and tension, rather than throwing monster faces and blood in your face to make you jump. I highly prefer those types of movies, though I also totally love cheesy, bad horror movies for totally different reasons.

I honestly have trouble properly recommending anything based on the idea of it being scary or disturbing because I'm a touch broken in that regard - I really don't find anything scary or disturbing. I blame the fact that I saw the original Nightmare on Elm Street in 1987, when I was 5, and then the internet. It's hard to phase me anymore. lol

I agree, I have seen the original Ringu and the remake seems to totally miss the point.

I've seen most of Hitchcock's films as well (watched "The Birds" twice), and yeah, countless cheesy b-movies from the '80s too because why not?
When I was a teenager in 1920 (well ok let's say in the mid '90s) there was a video shop that used to rent most old movies ('70s-'80s) for the equivalent of today's 50p a day. And if you rented on a Saturday, you could return the tape on Monday without any extra charges!

Some of the saddest conversations I've ever had were with kids like 5-10 years my junior trying to tell me The Ring was a better film than Ringu, and then proceeded to either say they never heard of Alfred Hitchcock, or in the most obscene cases, told me the remake version of Psycho was also better. shiver I agree with you - it completely missed the point of the original. I actually still like The Ring, but I treat them as entirely different movies, and I don't think the remake is anywhere near as strong of a film. In the original, it was all suspense - they didn't show what was on the video, or any of the dead people, other than rare, super fast glimpses and such. It amped you up the whole way through, so then when you finally do see things, it's frightening/unsettling rather than just startling. I feel like that is a much better ride.

I was kinda fortunate in that I frequently didn't even have to rent things. My aunt was a huge fan of horror stuff too, which is probably where I got it from, and she collected quite a lot of great (and cheesy) horror movies I watched, as well as books. I can still remember being a really young kid watching the "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" late night horror film show. Which probably also explains where I developed a huge love for buxom goth women too. XD

There's two but the first one is better. Also, if you like that the people who made that also made a movie called "Extraterrestrial"

If you like found footage: V/H/S/2 (the first movie is also good, but the 2nd is great!)
Slasher: The Friday the 13th franchise (Part 3, 4, 6 & Freddy vs. Jason are the best IMO)
I'm pretty sure, you have seen "The Shining". If I'm wrong, go for it! ;)
I also liked "1408". It's based on a Stephen King book.
Jack Ketchum's "The Girl Next Door" I also can recommend.
Oooh, there's so many good horror movies... :D
If you want more, just reply. Have fun and good night.

There are also a few nice french horror movies (pretty brutal and bloody ones):

  • High Tension
  • Inside
  • Martyrs (seems like a normal horror movie first, but wait... ;) )
  • Frontier(s)

A pretty nice british movie, i've watched not long ago is "Let Us Prey".

Here are some nice norwegian horror movies:

  • Cold Prey (The first one ist the best, but if you enjoyed the first, you'll also have fun with the sequel and the prequel)
  • Manhunt Backwoods Massacre
  • Dead Snow (funny zombie splatter movie! the first one is great, the 2nd one is okay)
