As per title, I am looking for a horror film to watch, not necessarily recent, but scary.
Gore is ok, but I'm not a fan of jump scares - those get boring quickly. I am more into unsettling plots and dark or unusual settings.

To give you an idea of what I like, I am a big fan of John Carpenter (The Thing, Price of Darkness, The Fog, Christine...).
So let's see, what are your favourite horror flicks?

And now, for the unrelated GA: 1DyS0 [Level 1+] (ended)
New GA: /PFSnM/

UPDATE: I've watched "Don't Blink" because it was easy to find and cheap (a few pence, second hand of course). 9 for the idea, 5 for the final result. Too many plot holes, I guess that's where people disappeared. :D

UPDATE 2: I have now watched "Jacob's Ladder", wow that was a trip. Very weird film, I think "Hellraiser: Inferno" might have been inspired by it a little, but Jacob's Ladder was deeper, more mysterious and all round much better.

UPDATE 3: Watched "Emergo" (Apartment 143) and May, because I could get them for a few pence :D The first started ok but went downhill quickly, the second is very weird but a bit boring (very well acted, though).

I suppose the classics that you didn't mention: The Shining, Poltergeist, The Exorcist, etc. As for newer movies, Insidious (and it's sequel) as well as The Conjuring, all surprised me. Drag me to hell is worth a mention too :p

And the first Final Destination (no to be mistaken with "THE final destination", which is the fifth one).

I found Drag me to Hell funny and well directed. Unfortunately the finale was a bit too obvious. Still worth viewting though.

I haven't watched The Babadook yet. My girlfriend did, and she was giggling all the time. I'm very curious now, so it went into my watchlist.
The Hole, which one? This, this, or... this?! :)

John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my all-time favorite horror films! YESH!

Despite the ridiculousness of running, jumping, climbing zombies, I really love Dawn of the Dead (2004).

Interesting. I have not seen this remake, yet. I don't expect to be a phylosophical metaphor of contemporary society and consumism like the original, but I guess there will be some good action.

I don't think there are any similarities between this one and the original except for the name and the zombies.

I found the opening and closing credits to be a fascinating artistic commentary -- Can't say that about many movies! The credits just encompass the craziness, fear, and OH-MY-GOD-WHAT-THE-HELL-IS-HAPPENING?? feelings of what's going on in such an encompassing way that I was quite happy to sit and watch them (the credits).

Did you say... horror movie? All right! I'll suggest you a classic:

The Wicker Man (1972)

With our always beloved and never forgotten, Christopher Lee.

Also, don't even MENTION the Nicholas Cage fiasco. We don't talk about that.

Ah, classic! Sir Christopher Lee has done so many brilliant films, and I haven't seen half of them yet!
Thanks for the suggestion.

He is credited on almost 300 movies on IMDB! Fantastic man indeed. And I know how you feel, I have so many of his to watch yet!

And no problem. I'll make sure to keep checking back if you ever watch it (I'm sure it will leave quite an impression on you, and the "horror" is utterly subtle and remarkable).

It Follows(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3235888/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) is a new one, it wasn't absolutely terrifying but it was really well done and pretty freaky.
The Conjuring(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1457767/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) was pretty darn scary as well.

if you don't mind foreign/subtitles:
Black House (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1193490/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) is really quite good.
as is Reincarnation(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0456630/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)

Audition(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235198/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) is kind of an older one and is more just completely f'd up than scary but it's worth a watch.

GL and I hope you find some new favorites

Thanks, mate. I don't mind foreign films at all, especially Asian horror.

By the way, I remember seeing a trailer years ago of a (Japanese? Korean? Chinese? can't remember) movie that I thought had to be titled "Water", but I can't find anything by that name.
The trailer I think featured a little girl standing in front of a lift, and when the doors opened, a wall of water poured out of it.
It really bothers me that I can't find that film now :(

Dark Water(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308379/) perhaps? It was a decent one. Up there with stuff like the original Grudge and whatnot.

A lot of the folks in this thread have some good ideas though, some of the stuff I haven't even thought about in years!

I've got a great recommendation that is not really mentioned but everyone that I've recommended it (a reddit thread like this, friends, etc) has really enjoyed it - a little gem as it were. It's extremely psychological and twisted and I won't say no more. Check out Session 9 ... Enjoy ;)

+1 :-) The number of times I've heard that....
It's got a strange title so it's easily skipped - but it all becomes clear! You won't be disappointed ;-)

I remember seeing a bit of Anger Heart on the telly ages ago. I was a little more than a kid, plus I missed the first half of the film so I had no idea what was going on and gave up.
Guess now I'm old enough to watch it all :D
