I don't watch many TV series, but Vikings would probably be my preferate. I also started watching Black Sails which seems pretty interesting.

I have yet to see The Bridge being mentioned between the other awesome recommendations

and if you are ooking for something obscure and hardly known but not a drama i woulc recommend The Lost Room

Watch Daredevil. It's truly incredible because it's so much darker than anything usually made by Marvel.

Orphan black's not too bad, Sherlock too :)

As mentioned before Sherlock and Breaking Bad a really good.

Helix - Resurrection - TWD - Fear TWD - V (from the very start beginning is not too bad.. then it goes a little bit downhill after the initial suspense and story line is gone :( I foresaw it coming anyways.. but it has a good nice initial build up like most alien contact premises etc) - and Supernatural ofcourse hell yeah

But my one time and only highest recommendation and a kind of always overlooked one although I suppose it is either highly well known or just highly overlooked because of it it's notorious 'unfinished' status kind of like Firefly... Jericho.

Jericho is so good I would so marry all the characters in the tv show because of how good it is.

There is a lot of familiar faces too and maybe some even unfamiliar new ones. I definitely give it a two thumbs up to anybody who needs a new tv show.. it is a bit old though like 2008 old.. but still good never the less.

My last choice pick is the original Stargate. But everybody knows and loves Stargate SG-1.

Heyyy, glad that u like game of thrones, that was crazy, its the best show i have watched. :D

My favourite is Leverage, though I don't think it covers any of your criteria...
While Wikipedia says it's a drama, if you ask me it's more of a comedy with an "oh crap, we fucked up and now things are getting serious" moment every episode. I dunno what an over arching story line means in practice, but if you mean stuff like Game of Thrones where something happens and someone gets killed off for real half the time, then that doesn't really happen in Leverage- it's more of an episode to episode thing with occasional connected episodes. I have no idea how popular it is but since there are 5 seasons I guess... reasonably popular? ^_^

Under the dome, season 2 was terrible but season 3 seems to be better again.

Shows that are complete that are worth backtracking for to watch every minute:
Breaking Bad, Battlestar Gallactica, Deadwood, Spartacus, Band of Brothers

Current shows to catch up on and continue with:
Mr. Robot (so freaking good and every episode is free on USA's site), Suits, Walking Dead, Black Sails, and for something random Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell.

Shows that were really good but they got cancelled too early for me to be considered great:
4400, Journeyman, Flash/Forward, Life

If you are german judging from the background of your profile pic "Der Tatortreiniger".
Little bit older stuff "The West Wing" and "Babylon 5".

Doctor who is a must see if you never watch it before:)
