Is the world ready for Call of Duty Battle Royale Humble Monthlies?

View Results
[Recurring subscription] Well, I didn't cancel monthlies that initially looked worse than this... I'll just go with the flow: one more month...
[New subscription] I'm not into Egyptian tomb swashbuckling, but Calladooty is my joint.
[Maybe subscribe] I’m just waiting for IGN to bring back one of the previous good deals for new subscribers.
[Cancelling / Pausing subscription] That's it, I had enough of these. First UPlay, now Battle.net. I want Steam keys, deitydamnit.
[Non-subscriber, will not buy] Humble Monthly is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. And I don't like uncertainty.

Humble Monthly is usually such an incredible deal that even when it's been an early reveal I don't care for, I don't pause because I'm sure there's something else good in the bundle.

But seeing such complete trash as the early reveal, this is my first time pausing my sub. You finally did it IGN. You made me not want a Humble Monthly.

That's the irony, Humble is pretending to be very much against key reselling but they do their best to force people to do it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yup. I remember well back when we got Overwatch, and those in regions who couldn't get that one got Prototype 2, and those who couldn't get that one either got 5$.

That was before Humble silently amended their FAQ that had until then stated that all Monthly games (except Originals) would be Steam keys.

So I asked Humble support, as I had subscribed for a year only because their FAQ said it's all for Steam, if I could have 5$ or Prototype 2 instead. Answer (of course): Nope!

So I gave my Overwatch key away. Next time I needed Humble support? "I see you're a key trader/reseller; we're not gonna help you, go pound sand."

And that's when I made sure to always set the Humble tip to zero if I buy a weekly bundle, and in the rare case that I buy a monthly, I always buy only a single one ("gift" lets you do that) and will never ever subscribe again. (I got suckered into the yearly before the IGN buyout, for a 10$ wallet offer. Two weeks later they started offering 20$ and later even more, but because I took the 10$ once, I was never ever eligible for anything ever again.)

Doesn't seem like a good way to deal with the fallout. They should let people vent - not allowing that will just make them more upset. Seems crazy that a company that has had a lot of good will and a strong fan base for many years can lose the plot so easily. I don't mean just the bundles - there are always going to be good and bads ones - and you can never keep everyone happy, but to black out all criticism just gives those saying IGN have ruined HB more ammo.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I disagree. Each month have many games but there will be always ppl who didn't get any interesting for them. And fighting because early reveal is game for other platform(I would rather get uplay games like Origins than shitty steam games) than steam is pointless - just don't buy this month and they'll see that something gone wrong. For me early reveal is just crap - I don't like multiplayer games that much and most likely I'll cancel my plan to get some discount at the end of the month but I won't get my internet sword and vent out with crap talk how IGN changed HB - because it didn't, we just have less and less unbundled games and such projects like monthly need good deal of publishers support.

Finally i read a comment like yours, i thought i was the only one who wasnt crying because the lastest AAA early reveal isnt on steam or isnt much of my taste. The value of humble monthly is amazing and it got even better from the moment that they started including AAA games in order to catch every gamer. Even if i end up not liking early reveals or most of the late reveals i still feel that i got my money worth from one or two games alone. But the majority of gamers saw all those bundles the last few years and they seem to be entitled and ask only for the best of the best games on the bundles and all of them should fit their tastes. They prefer to spend most of their time whining about the sequel not living to their standards, a game not being released on steam a bundle not fitting their tastes etc.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Typically, your comment holds a lot of truth.
In this particular case though, the biggest reason we can say people do not need to complain yet is that we have some indie games to go along with the early reveal, and they may be fun.

Looking at the early reveal though, what do we have? A stripped-down half-version of a game, where the player base has been complaining about the lack of players in standard multiplayer and Blackout since January, with player numbers dropping even then. However, this is a multiplayer-only game, so people who get it get a product they may not be able to use right at the purchase.
Sure, there are bots, but most anyone seems to agree on that they are only decent to play with on zombies mode—the one game mode this early unlock deliberately misses and asks 20 USD/EUR for unlocking it.

So, people are complaining because they know that the next monthly bundle's only known title thus far may be a game they cannot even play soon after they receive it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My way looking at HB monthly is that it's quite lottery. But titles such as this month Black Ops are just try it for couple hours and forget and 12$ is not that huge amount to pay monthly even for central/eastern europe student. Still I consider buying it later this month but for other unlocks - HB showed many times that they can give us other unlocks even better than early ones and then we see "damn, should buy it" comments.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

@Raarmas. It's not clear to me which part of what I said you disagree with, but for what it's worth, I actually agree with what you are saying. I don't complain if I don't like the look of the bundle - I just pause, and this will be the 2nd straight month I'll be doing so. (Although, as I'm on month to month, I was able to pause last month, but only have option to cancel this month, which I will do).
My only real point (perhaps this is where you disagree?), is that I don't think it looks good for HB to shut down their Steam forum and to be deleting all comments. They should rather weather the storm, or perhaps try engaging with their customer base. They could have just blocked or removed obvious trolls or over-inflammatory posts.

I actually had not seen the HB Steam forum lately since latest early unlock, so I can only guess that it was the typical Steam over reaction - but I can't see any situation where shutting down the forum was the best move.

The part with letting people vent out. A lot of comments are not constructive criticism but just hate talk. Sorry for not making it clear. ;p If someone need to just let the steam out beacuse of couple games a month that means some problems with that person. And how can HB talk with such community? Let's look at fb comments - they're more in polite tone even if they're criticism when there could be consequences of spitting venom. Only way for HB to make ppl satisfied is to give something different next month. ;p And we shouldn't forget that HB for a while places weekly bundles which aren't half bad. If steam discussion would be held in tone of ours HB would maby consider to take a part in it.

For me HB monthly is one of the best way to get some games that I would never touch or consider buying and still with some breaks but I'll be buying it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Only thing I want to add - FB comments arent that "polite". In general yes, there are people who (Obviously only because they are not anonymous) write politely .
But I see a lot of hate speech comments about rape, killing, suicide, religion even under their real names. People on FB are as toxic as any other online community. Only thing holding back their verbal diarrhea is having their real name and picture besides their comment. And as I said - not even that hold back the hate now.
I feel I have to add this again in a comment about internet community..

Talking about monthly - until this all monthlies I bought had variety of genres and I was satisfied if I got at least 2 or 3 games for me and others to give away. Last month it was all indie games. Only the Origins was of interest. And I just feel cheated that they would make such a bundle as monthly very theme specific bundle. I understand they can put what they want in it and many people will like it - but after many good bundles I expect variety of gendres. Which I dont get.. And I feel thats a spit in face for many fans who dont like such genres as indie, dating sims or pixel graphic games. (no need to comment about morality of being happy that you get bundles at al, no matter the games.. I get that. Doesnt change a fact that I can be displeased with current situation)
And the cod ? Cmon. Its one thing to sell base game that requires bunch of expensive DLCs to lure in new players. But specifically selling incomplete game and asking you to pay more to get more of the game ? Activision is just so out of it with CODs and their greed for money. Sad to see humble jumping after them.,

In a way I agree with it. Social media does make us duller.
But regarding all the stupid angry people - internet and social media has given them a chance to connect with other similar people at it feels that numbers of stupid people increase while in reality they have always been there - we just see them finally thanks to social media.
Got to trow another bit from Bill Burr interview in here, which gives another example how internet made possible for stupid people to connect and feel better :D
It goes further and they discuss about shit people comment on internet as well. Interesting watch ;)

As a local saying goes: "stupidity condenses in groups". The more they can connect with other similar people the more it enforces their behavior. Before they were angrily muttering about things with couple friends at a pub and the biggest result was a hangover. Now they can rant all they want any time they want and get acceptance from thousands. I never said social media increased the number of stupid people, just that the ones who use it will get more stupid and depressed because of it. :)

@Raarmas Fair enough - we disagree on that point - but that's ok ;)

I just think that building a good reputation takes a long time - but to throw it away can be very quick. HB did (does?) have a good reputation, and were known to engage with their audience. I'm not an advocate of censorship, but do see the need to block blatantly offensive content. Always upsets me when everyone gets censored for the actions of a few. Although - to be fair - I can imagine that it was more than a few throwing toys out of their cot in the Steam forums :p

So, with the huge amount of backlash this early reveal has received, who else expects HB will soon reveal more games? I keep expecting that they're going to show something else soon to slow down the rate of people pausing/cancelling their sub.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Off the top of my head I think every HB monthly that didn't have a Steam game as an Early Unlock has had early reveals. I'm pretty positive there will be at least 1 early unlock.

Tbh I really don't think a mass amount of people are going to be pausing/canceling their HB monthly sub due to CoD. CoD is a huge franchise that a lot of people like/love so even if the person with the sub doesn't like it I'm sure there's plenty of people they know that really want it. I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the biggest gifted games in the history of the HB monthly.

I pre-ordered this game with a few other friends which was my first mistake. The game was absolutely ridden with bugs at launch and most of which weren't even patched a few months after release. Some are still in the game. The UI is pretty bad, but it seems like they're fixing issues soon or it has been recently updated a bit. Sadly, starting to play this late in the game's life cycle is probably a mistake because of how much content you missed due to it being locked behind a grind wall. You will miss out on two operators, and a handful of weapons. If you don't plan on playing the game religiously, then I wouldn't recommend it. The game can be fun, but after more than enough times of being disappointed by half-assed added game modes and the absolutely terrible monetization system, I stopped playing. Every once in awhile I go back to see how bad the microtransactions became, and every time, I'm disappointed. If you have a few people to play with, then it may be worthwhile, but there's no zombies content included, so why bother. Even then, the only maps that my friends and I have enjoyed playing were IX, Blood of the Dead, and Classified. If you have a few stable people to play with and it interests you, then go for it. Otherwise, don't even bother unless you plan on trading the key. I am extremely disappointed in the game and I wouldn't recommend supporting it in it's current state. You'd be better off buying WWII Gold Edition for $40 when it goes on sale. There isn't much of a player base, but it's still a lot better than BO4 in almost every other area.

Well... for a battle royale type of game still in early access, the asking price is too expensive imo.
If it had been free for the current DL owners, it surely would be more populated.
Say, free for DL owners... plus, dunno... maybe something around $5 to get the comestic stuff from the founders pack, that would have been more reasonable to me.

Anyway.. perhaps that it wouldn't have been a better choice, but I certainly would have appreciated it more than that battle royale CoD. ;)

This month's bundle makes sense now. Activision is treating the battle edition as free game with that economy of free-to-play games. The point here is to lure even more people into the transaction hurricane that is swiping through the CoD franchise. I am disgusted by Activision and I hope people will realize they shouldn't support such greedy company.
