Which one are you getting?
There are a lot of games that are hard simply because they are broken or badly designed.
I ragequitted an obscure Wolfenstein 3D clone called The Fortress of Dr. Radiaki. That game is soooooooo bad and it's such a pain.

Hmmm, when I think about it, the only game I've ever taken a break from (my "breaks" can last for years) because of difficulty rather than it becoming tedious, boring or pointless would probably be SpaceChem. When I was playing it I had gotten further than anyone on my friends list so I was left without a point for comparison. I know I can do the rest of the game too and I'm interested in seeing its conclusion... I'm just really not looking forward to spending hours on every single level/puzzle to do that. ^_^
Also most Bullet Hell games on their maximum difficulty I guess. I usually go through those difficulty by difficulty and stop when one of them gets too impossible for my reflexes. Sure, I could probably get further if I really tried to memorize patters and stuff... but I can't be arsed. Out of the Bullet Hell games I've played Hitogata Happa was the most difficult since I barely even managed to beat what goes for normal difficulty. Anything above that was too insane.
(Also also, Dota 2. It's definitely hard to win in a game when half the time you get randomly teamed up with a bunch of brain-dead chimps which were somehow allowed near computers and only know how to swear.)

Brain dead chimps who only know how to swear is the vast majority of the MOBA community, which is why I stay far, far away from it.
I used to play and old Genesis schmup called Hellfire. I don't think I ever got past level 4. It's just not my genre.

First you can think it's easy and has simple puzzles. But with a little time, you will get always in the same location and will need to "think outside the box" if you want to go to another places.
The most hard puzzle game I played and I after beat it I think is the most hard game I know.
And of course, it's super fun!

yeah i'm sort of stuck in it don't know where to go think i need another gun just go around building towers to try to get to other places but that didn't work =P apart from not knowing where to go currently it seems rather easy so far

Well i will still give it a go,but my memory is not the best for reasons...so i tend to struggle with puzzles depending how they are done.
I am not to bad with say Portal games as that mostly just solving the puzzle and not a lot of back and forth...but games like RE where you have to back track a lot i have more issue with,as i tend to forget a step or i have trouble finding the clue so back track and sometimes forgot what clue i was tracking.
The joys of having your short term memory not working 100% lol so sometimes things forgot to get dumped into longer term memory. AKA lost in translation? lol
Anyhow maybe i will surprise myself and will do alright,after all i still had fun with Portal 2,still need to beat Portal though,i beat Portal on console,working on 2 and first one on pc.

For a plat former i would have to say Super Meat Boy..
But Super Hexagon is another tough puzzle one for me,though i think that may be me then the game itself being hard,to much going on and it is hard for me to concentrate on the puzzle.
I have the same trouble with Beat Hazard when to much stuff is on screen my eyes have a hard time keeping track of all that is going on and my ship ends up blending in with other stuff and i die lol.
I would have to say though the most brutal for me was Dark Souls,i should buy it one these days and try it again on Steam,all i know is when i tried it on the console i could not beat it,in fact the first boss was to much or maybe he was a mini boss.Though i never been good with games that require fast reflexes or timing.

Devil Survivor 1/2 on the standard difficulty.
Not only is the entire game ridiculously hard but the endgame all but requires specific demons or else you can't physically beat the missions.
