Mafia 2 was the better game overall, it had one major annoying issue to it though: every single mission always had to go wrong. There was never a sense of "I did that perfectly" because missions going pear-shaped were scripted into the game, so no matter how well you carried out as much of the mission as the game let you it was always a case of bad luck every mission. Kind of repetitive...

I found the detective work in La Noire to be excessively dragged out and didn't like it that much, I found the game quite dull :/
Also I never played the original Mafia game, after my disappointment with the second one I never went back to catch up on the first.

L.A. Noire is quite slow paced, you have to do a lot of analysing and action bits are more rare. Mafia 2 gives you guns to wreak havoc with and doesn't really care much about anything else lol. The strange thing is, Mafia 2 has more similarities to GTA than L.A. Noire :P Both are gritty games though.

L.A. Noire is quite slow game, checking everything for clues, evidences, intorregating witnesess. Everything takes a lot of time. I personally was sometimes bored of this. There is no much action. Main advantage would be plot.
Mafia, has fast action, a lot of "shoot everybody around". Story is quite nice, but not so good like in L.A. Noire. Gameplay is focused on story, You cant "freely" explore the town.
Both games have a lot of vehicles (but i think L.A. Noire has more) and collectibles.

Mafia 2 is a good game, but for some reason I just don't feel motivated to go back and play it often. L.A. Noire on the other hand is interesting to me. It plays more like Heavy Rain than anything really. Its basically a new take on point and click adventure gaming. The main reason why I waited so long to play L.A. Noire was because I HATED GTA IV, but I've found I am really really enjoying L.A. Noire and have almost beat it I think.

Ooooh it's so hard to compare them because they're so different in so many ways, but also so similar :P I think I have to say the story of Mafia had me hooked way more. I felt for ALL the characters, and the gunplay was superb. (I don't even use that word, that's how good it is)
