I just received a game through a trade, a steam gift.
Looking at the description though it says "- Two pack" but only appears as a single item.

I'm fairly new to Steam, am I missing something latently obvious? Google doesn't help much.

It is what it is, a two pack of the item. I am to possibly assume. Or maybe one for you, one for the trader? Which would be the most likely assumption.

there are two packs, where you get to keep one copy and another to give away, but i would assume that this is actually just tagged this was to show you that it came from a two pack... I still have a game in my inventory called "2 Pack Gift", which is the gift I got for opening a two pack

Maybe it's for 2 people, one pack is for you and other pack is for another winner.

It's just a description issue - sometimes extra copies from (two, or four) say "Game name two pack gift". The gift part is what matters to you in this case. It indicates that the game is a single item.

To elaborate, if the description says "Game X two pack" in inventory, then it's a pack.
However, if it says "Game X two pack gift" in inventory, then it's a single extra copy from an already opened pack.

in my exp. it depends (new game old game which one?) ... some gift descriptions are ridiculously careless

had a 4pack once not knowing whether it contained 4 or 1 ... copies of the game
(the description was 1:1 the same!! > new game, Gauntlet i think ... in the meantime it might have changed)

Maybe you simply received 2 pack - when you activate it, you'll get one copy for library and other copy for inventory?
