Just because it's in a .deb package doesn't have to mean that it's only for Debian based distros. When you have the dependencies you just have to extract the files from the package and run it, AFAIK there are even some guides on the discussions page of the Linux hub.

You shouldn't base your choice on this. Steam client should run on every Linux distribution or at least the main ones.

I prefer Xubuntu over standard ubuntu, i just can't get used to the starter thingy on the side. :/

When you don't like Unity I recommend you Ubuntu with KDE, it is more like Windows and it's IMO the best desktop environment. You can also easily customize it to look like you want.

I know its an old post but hey it's as good as any
... let me be a bit harsh here, everyone who want's to install Linux to try Steam, shouldn't. Yeah i know it may sound crazy but you should install Linux because you want to try to use and more importantly learn to use new system. If you install new system to try some program you will get burn horribly and you will join squadron of internet trolls whining how shitty Linux is after using it for few hours.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and 12.10 are the only officially supported distros, and as mentioned earlier probably the most "noob" friendly for those new to Linux. Linux Mint appears to be the most popular non-Ubuntu distro among Steam users at least. You can get a good idea of how popular various distros are relative to one another by following the page hit rankings at DistroWatch.com.
