I do it through Steam because it's easier that way to confirm they've received and activated the key.

So that if the winner doesn't feedback,you can show proof you gave it to them.

Happened to me once: Winner had an email that wasn't valid anymore, and I've nearly lost my gamersgate key thanks to that. So yeah, it's just a lot safer to add the person and make sure he received the key.

I email it cause of my busy schedule. Its the persons responsibility to make sure their email is in order.

Accepting a gift automatically adds the gifter as a friend anyway.

maybe one possible reason is that they don't want to just send someone a key and have the winner end up hoarding it to use in a trade? not everyone on here follows the rules and activates the game on their account like they are supposed to.
