Hi!

My favourite is "Home Safety Hotline", which simulates working for a pest control company with a dark secret. The UI is modeled after retro 90s-esque computer interfaces.

I meet all of these qualifications. I am eager to enter your whitelist!

I mean, the obvious choice for me is Resident Evil 4 (OG), I've been playing that game almost yearly since it came out.
It's a boring choice and perhaps a bit of a cop out but I really do love it. Heck, I even had the gamecube chainsaw controller at one point in my life, it was terrible.

Though I also have a guilty pleasure in some of the older, "classic" RPG maker horror games. Ao Oni, Ib, .flow, Crooked Man etc, less from playing them myself and more from my addiction of watching horror youtubers, back before they turned out to be the true horror all along.

I love OG RE 4 as well, remaster (not remake) was even better IMO. I didn't play the remake yet.

While it's really not a horror game, I always loved the general atmosphere of night and dread that defined a lot of the missions in the old original Thief: The Dark Project game. The sound design was marvelous, and gave the nights such a suggestive pricking-of-the-thumbs feeling! The game is old enough now that it isn't really a vivid experience any more, but when it was current it was thrilling.

My favorite jump-scare is from the first F.E.A.R. game, when Alma first appears down in the cellars. Scared the stuffing out of me.

I've never played the original Thief trilogy. I've played the "new" Thief game and I really enjoyed it.

F.E.A.R. is amazing, especially the second one :)

My favorite horror game to this day, at least, is Silent Hill 4 - The Room. Played on Xbox near release date and loved the setting of being stuck on a room and that mysteriously creepy dark hole on the wall being the only way out. I remember one of the monsters looked very similar to Sadako / Samara from The Ring and it really scared me a lot. Sadly I haven't been able to beat the game and never played again ever since. Just hope for a remaster like release on Steam in the future so I can play it again and maybe beat it this time.

Welcome to my WL :)

The Room was the worst SH by far IMO, no flashlight, brightly lit up rooms, annoying bosses and mechanics, the only good thing was the music by Akira Yamaoka. If they remade it and made it darker it would be great as the game and the story had huge potential.

Thanks!

Since I played like 20 years ago, my memories might be infected with the nostalgia virus. XD Although think I also got some dim memory flashes about having some gameplay issues and that might be why I never actually beat the game. =)

What's your favorite horror game of all times and why?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/480490/Prey/

This is a great game in so many aspects. And if a mug trying to kill you is not horror than I don't know what horror is. Dead Space makes you stomp all corpses but Prey makes you never trust anything ever again and just hit everything with the wrench just to make sure that it does not want to kill you or if it does that you will get the first strike on it.

Isn't Prey more like action sci-fi? I've played the first Prey, it was allright but this one looks a lot better :)

I can't answer your question without spoiling the game :P Let say it is closer to Dead Space type of horror game.

My favourite horror game is probably a toss up between Dead Space and Left for Dead. Dead Space because I LOVE Sci-Fi, and I also love the game's influences. Plus for me atmosphere is everything, and this game has that in spades. Sci-Fi and horror have also always been a match made in heaven for me. Left for Dead because I have such a fondness for it as a game I grew up with and created many cherished memories with. L4D isn't really scary for me anymore, so as an adult I'd probably pick Dead Space over it, but as a kid I definitely found it super scary. Nothing matched egging each other to get closer to the witch, or provoking it to terrify your friends...

L4D is just a shooter IMO, hardly any horror there aside from the fact that we fight zombies. But yeah DS is amazing :)

Hey :)

I haven't played many horror games at all. For a long stretch I've been a casual games player, playing flash games mostly on Kongregate. I'm trying to get into more hardcore gaming slowly, but the casual is still in my DNA, so a puzzle platformer horror game like Little Nightmares is probably the only horror game I've played that I remember. And I loved every minute of this game!

Gosh darn. Fine I'll apply for WL since you opened a Duck Detective giveaway lol.

  • If I would say best pure horror, that would be Alien Isolation. I don't play much and playing "Search Party" definitely reminded me that I'm still an absolute wimp for horror. It's got the tension down, the environmental detail, the AI, and less jump scares the better.
  • If we were to go for action horror, I've seen people post Prey (2016), Dead Space, Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 but honestly, Prey might be my favorite of the bunch. Love Arkane's more "immersive-sim" games and the actual story was much better than I expected
  • If we were to go with puzzle platforming lite-horror, contenders would be Limbo, Inside, Little Nightmares (II is on my backlog), and DARQ, I'd have have to pick Limbo just because it's the first one that sparked me enjoying puzzle platformers.

Just coming back to this post to let you know that I finished Little Nightmares II and I recommend them both. The games are connected so it would be best to play LN1 then 2. Knowing that the games are connected definitely has me hyped for LN3. And happy belated new year!

I'd have to say either Alan Wake or Dead Space. Both really good stories and visuals, but both suffered the same flaw for me, the port from the consoles left me fighting the controls more than the enemies. Thankfully, the good story and visuals will always win out ^_^

Usually i don't play horror games to prevent nightmares. But there was an exception, Parasite Eve 2 on playstation 2, i liked the RPG side that as soon as a fight started i could choose an action by stopping time, also walk around with an assault rifle and throw fireballs. Still there was some serious jumpscares and ugly monsters sigh.

Also breach & clear deadline that i won here, i didn't like the grind but the ambiance was bearable even for the chicken like me because the fights are not real time.

Hmm that's tough. I don't really go in for classic horror style games, just not my thing in general. That said though Fear 2 was an excellent game with a touch of horror as was Prey but ultimately I would say System Shock 2. That had some of the creepiest moments in gaming for me when I first played it.

CAYNE and The Letter
but
Fatal Frames (dont remember which, but was on Xbox) is probably the scariest game i have tried, and much further down is the first Quake and Doom 3
The best I have to say was the old Silent Hill 2 or F.E.A.R. can't decide

You can find it on torrents, but I'm not sure if it's a full version of the game, since it used a microphone that you had to blow into.
There are also remakes by Qimsar and arturlaczkowski. But unfortunately it is not the original. https://arturlaczkowski.itch.io/ptemulation
