Same. Disc and XBLA. Actually happen to be playing it recently. Doing the Luck Code run, not quite at reverse castle yet. Easily one of the best games of all time.

Super Matroid is great! I still remember buying it day 1 when it came out for the SNES. I think I beat it at least 10 times before I went onto any other SNES game back in the day. Loaned it to a friend who "lost" it though, which was a shame. Thanks to the Virtual Console, I own the game again and went back and it's just as fun as it was when I played it when I was younger. Can't go wrong with those old school 2d Metroid games!
Comment has been collapsed.
I was never a fan of that game. I actually prefer other, less popular games in the series over it.
Comment has been collapsed.
How is one of the two series responsible for the subgenre not considered one by you? HOW?!
Comment has been collapsed.
Because it doesn't have a leveling system or stat based items/equipments that were introduced on SotN. Games like that are simply Metroid-likes (except for, well, Metroid games).
Comment has been collapsed.
An RPG system is not required to be a Metroidvania style game.
Comment has been collapsed.
That doesn't mean **. The Metroid series is the originator of the subgenre. They are bloody well Metroidvania games**.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ok then. Now go back to your 3D platformers like Super Mario World.
Comment has been collapsed.
Jesus **, I hate** Mario. I was a Sega brat.
The Metroid games are included in the Metroidvania subgenre, as games get in there based on a wide scale map with some free roaming abilities. Not by being a platformer RPG.
Comment has been collapsed.
Platformer RPG =/= Metroidvania. Don't go putting words in ma mouth, now.
Comment has been collapsed.
You think it isn't the bleeding map and gameplay that originated from the Metroid series that does it, so what else is left?
Comment has been collapsed.
Dude just ignore him, he really has no clue what he is saying, been gaming for 20 years, Metroid is one of my favorite series ever, I love these style games, it is so a Metroidvania game, ignore the dumb users.
I love Mario, why you a hate on a mario, he just doing the princess saving :-D!

Good thing you're probably the only one who has this opinion.

So you don't consider any of the Metroid games to be in the Metroidvania subgenre? None of them have RPG systems.
Comment has been collapsed.
Levels in Japanese RPGs are typically acquired through experience points, and those come from killing enemies. Not from getting item upgrades.
Not sure what you meant with your second sentence, though.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think now a days, most people consider RPG elements to be involved in them ever since Castlevania: SotN, but I do not feel they are required. When I think Metroidvania, I think of exploration styled 2d games where you need certain items/powers to unlock newer areas. That would be like saying, "So and so game doesn't have an inventory, so it's not a Metroidvania". There will always be exceptions to what is and isn't. Saying the Metroid games are not part of that genre is just mind boggling to me though.
Comment has been collapsed.
Saying that a game inspired by Metroid alone is a Metroidvania is equally mindboggling to me as well.
Comment has been collapsed.
So you are saying because you do not gain XP in Metroid and do not level up, it's not a Metroidvania game? So ONLY games where you get XP and level up, that are 2d platform exploration games can be classified as Metroidvania games, am I right? So with that said, please give me a list of the games you consider are Metroidvania. Besides the Castlevania games that play like SotN, I can only think of maybe 2-3 other games where you gain XP and level up.
Comment has been collapsed.
He's saying that Metroid games aren't Metroidvania games.
Comment has been collapsed.
I always figured as "RPG Elements" to the Metroidvania genre, they meant ways your character gets more powerful, not just gain XP and leveling up. By "more powerful", I mean in the fact that you get better weapons, better skills, better powers, rather they are bought, found, or obtained through leveling up. I just don't see the point of calling it, "RPG Elements" and then say you MUST gain XP and Level Up, I consider that an RPG at that point.
By saying that only 2d platformer games with exploration where you must gain XP and leveling up, you are saying that almost everyone on the internet is wrong and that about 80% of all the games categorize as Metroidvania are wrong. Hell, you can't even look at a "Top 10 Metroidvania" list ANYWHERE online that doesn't have Super Metroid either at the #1 or #2 spot.
Comment has been collapsed.
You know that Metroid games (at least the ones I've played) don't have leveling systems or stat-based items right? So you don't consider Metroid games to be Metroidvania. Gotcha. Good luck trying to convince anyone of that.

I picked up UnEpic a while back and it's so good! I love the crazy plot and the humor the game has. I think the best parts of the game to me are the map editor to make you own games and the co-op story mode that plays out different then the original game. The game is also challenging, which I always LOVE!
I bought Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet on XBLA because a friend suggested it to me, I had no idea it was a Metroidvania game before that and loved it. My only gripe was that it was pretty short and kind of easy, but was still a very fun game.
Guacamelee I've owned for a while now, but never really played it on Steam. Got it during a humble bundle I think and it just sat there. It wasn't until it was given out for free on the Xbox One as part of their Games with Gold promotion that I actually played it and it's great! Wasn't very hard though, but loved the humor and all the throwbacks to older games.

You know, I was actually talking about Dark Souls with a buddy a while back and he was talking about how, to him, it does share many of the same elements that you'd find in a Metroidvania game and he feels they belong in the same genre. I doubt many would consider Dark Souls as a Metroidvania game, though it could probably be debated since it's pretty close to having everything you'd hope for in that style of game.
All I know is I LOVE how hard Dark Souls is!! :D

I'd take a 2d Metroidvania game anyday over anything else! I also agree that 2d is a staple of the genre. I think that is why I didn't enjoy the Metroid Prime games as much as I did other Metroid games. I do know some who would argue that point though, but in my mind, you are 100% right!

La-Mulana is awesome, I'm attempting to unlock all achievements in it now.
Other good metroidvanias I can think of are Bunny Must Die and An Untitled Story. Borderline example, because I don't know if it counts, but Hero Core is decent as well.

As I said in the original post, I still have yet to even beat the game. I've been trying to play through without using any guides but I've been stuck on a puzzle forever it seems. I just can't seem to figure out where I am supposed to go next. It's been a while since I played it though, been thinking about popping back on it again soon and trying my luck. After updating my computer and installing a new OS, I had thought I forgot to backup my save and I'd have to start over... then I realized, Steam Cloud! THANK GOD! LOL!
If I can't seem to get any further though, I just might have to resort to a guide just to get past where I am stuck.

It's been almost a year since I last played it, but I think the last boss I fought was Sakito, the second boss. I know I was having problems with that one part of the temple that is mirrored, think I am in the sky temple right now. I might have to load up the game and have a look to be sure and get back to you.
Comment has been collapsed.
Mirrored part? Do you mean one of the backside areas?
If you're in Spring in the Sky, do you have a Scalesphere yet? It may be counter-intuitive, but you need to swim through one screen to get it. Be wary that you also need a helmet bought elsewhere to progress further.
Comment has been collapsed.
That might be what I am missing then is that helmet because I don't recall ever finding or buying one. The mirrored part I was talking about I think is something like, Twin Labyrinths. I had to go in there to find something, don't recall if I ever found what I was looking for though.

Metroid Fusion, while being of one of the series that resulted in the name of the subgenre, is just a bit too linear compared to most in this style, but I still enjoy it. Others I like are Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, both for the DS.
Comment has been collapsed.
I never got into handhelds, which is a shame since they seem to have TONS of great Metroidvania style games! I played some of the earlier stuff on the Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and the Gameboy Advance, but haven't even touched a DS at all. A Spider-Man Metroidvania game though... now that might be something I'll have to look into! One of my favorite superheroes and my favorite genre, that sounds like a win-win in my book! Thanks for that suggestion!

I am surprised someone even knew spiderman : webs of shadows. It was good.

I think that without a guide i would still try to finish La-Mulana.
Good game but more than 50% the hidden tips are too well hidden for my poor english comprehension (try remember the time where you get the pepper...)
I liked La-Mulana + every 2D Metroid/Castlevania + Guacamelee + Aquaria and lot more, but these are my favorites.
Comment has been collapsed.
No doubt! When my buddy showed it off to me and told me about the game, it sounded like something I would absolutely love. I love a game that makes you think, on top of the fact that it was also a Metroidvania game, I figured it was a match made in heaven.
After I bought it and started playing, I quickly got stuck and had no idea what to do. I found myself contemplating looking at a guide, since I was stuck only like, 30 minutes or so into the game. I first thought, maybe this game is a little too challenging for me when it came to the puzzles. After thinking it over, I decided against it and went on playing. I get stuck a lot in this game, and sometimes it takes me forever to figure out where to go or what to do, but I find it very rewarding to figure it out all on my own. I've mad maps of the ares that I've explored so far on graph paper, marking areas of interests, puzzles/clues, traps, and other notes to help me on my way, something I have never done for a Metroidvania game in my life.
I will beat this game with as little help as I can... even if it kills me in doing so! LOL

I love the artwork for the game as well. I keep telling myself I am going to play it more, have it for both the PC and when they gave it out on the XBLA as part of their Games with Gold promotion. Every time I go to play it though, I just always end up playing something else instead. Maybe one day I'll actually give it a good go!

I'd have to agree with bobofatt & EthylMethylEther
Super Metroid & SotN

I figured I'd suggest another of my favorites, though this one is limited to just the Xbox 360. An XBLA title called Shadow Complex. It's a great modern day Metroidvania game, as well as influenced by one of my favorite authors, Orson Scott Card, and produced by Chair Entertainment and Epic Games. One of my favorite aspects of this game is that they call it a "2.5d platformer" since you can shoot into the background as well as in front of you, which is something I've always hoped more Metroidvania games would do. Game is a blast and for the Xbox 360, it's my pick as, "Must own" if you are looking for a great Metroidvania game!
Comment has been collapsed.
I bought it when it launched for $14.99 and never regretted it. It was well worth the price and the experence was better then some AAA $59.99 games I had bought for consoles.
It reminds me a lot of Super Metroid, with the suit you get and some of the upgrades you get for the suit later in the game. The boss fights remind me of some of the fights you'd encounter in the Metal Gear Solid games, like super tanks or mechs. The guns are great, each of your basic weapons have laser pointers, which you aim with the right stick and can should any direction, at times you can even shoot into the background at enemies. You start simple, with just a pistol, but you get bigger and better weapons as you go, along with special weapons, like a rocket launch, bombs, and other things.
You can usually see it at a good price during some of Xbox Live's sales, seen it as low as $4.99 in the past. I've always thought this would make a great Games with Gold game to give out for free, which if they make a sequel for the game, would be a great idea to pull a few months before launch. If you do ever get a chance to pick it up, I highly suggest it!

Yup. Someone should convince Epic Games or Microsoft (don't know who has the exact publishing rights) that a PC port would be a good thing.

+1
Solid list right there! Played most of those free ones and a few of the commercial released ones.
Rogue Legacy is GREAT! It appeals to both my love of Metroidvania games and my Rogue-like games! I was bummed that I forgot to back this one up when I installed my new OS, so I had to start over but still loving every minute of it!

Cave Story might not be super deep but it did seem like one to me, I beat it 3 times and it reminded me of other metroidvania's, just short and sweet, personally its one of my favs.

Cave Story is great, picked it up on the Wii when it was released there as well as playing it awhile back when it was freeware. Though it is a bit more linear then some, I've always considered it a Metroidvania game and usually place it pretty high if I were to make a list of my favorites in the genre.

Glad somebody brought up An Untitled Story, I came in here to post that. If you've never played it, go play it at least up until you gain the ability to duck. If you still hate it once you've got that many powers, you can stop. And don't feel bad if you die a ton and have to play on easy. The game is still more than hard enough.
I would also like to point out that I am very bad at video games and was able to get the achievement for never dying in You Have To Win The Game. There are maybe two rooms I would classify as hard and the rest of the game is just dying until you find a consistent strategy. It's much more a persistence-based game than a skill-based one, which is why a lot of people seem to hate it.
Comment has been collapsed.
I liked You Have To Win The Game, reminded me of a mix between a Metroidvania game and one of those "die 1000+ times before you progress" games like, I Wanna Be The Guy. For a free game, I found it pretty fun, though a bit on the short side.
I keep hearing about An Untitled Story and might have to try it out. Looks pretty interesting. Thanks for the suggestion!

Metroidvania games have been a long time favorite genre for me and I am always looking for new games in this genre to check out that I may not have known about. Figured I'd ask around here on the forums and see what others like as well as share one of my all time favorites.
Currently, one of my favorites is one I still have yet to even beat. The game is very challanging, not because it's hard, but because some of the puzzles are very hard to figure out, while some puzzles don't even seem like it's a puzzle when it actually is. That game is La-Mulana.
Taken from the Steam Store page...
LA-MULANA is an “Archaeological Ruin Exploration Action Game” in which you search inside ancient ruins, seeking out the “Secret Treasure of Life” – which sleeps in the sprawling ruins of “LA-MULANA” and is said to be the beginning of all civilization. Apart from the plethora of traps lying in wait to stop intruders, there are also monsters on the prowl, protecting the ruins. Head for the innermost depths of the ruins while solving a variety of mysteries, fending off monsters, and disarming traps. Forging ahead will be no simple task – the further into the depths you reach, the more difficult the mysteries become.
La-Mulana 2 is being Kickstarted as we speak and I hope it comes. If you are a fan of Metroidvania style games and love challenging ones, this is a must own!
So, what's your favorite Metroidvania game?
