Lately I've been listening to a lot of Hugo Kant, Tommy Guerrero and other lo-fi, rocksteady, trip-hop and downtempo records (you know those 'songs to work and study'? so...). But in the last few weeks I’ve also heard Erik Satie, who is a French pianist from the early twentieth century who composed music that may be a precursor to downtempo (well, at least I see some similarities, but I don't know much about music), Novos Baianos, which is a musical group from Bahia, in the northeastern region of Brazil, and which in the 1970s was part of a counterculture movement called 'Tropicália', and the album Afro-Sambas by Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes (brazilian ambassador who was exiled during the years of the military dictatorship), which is a 1966 record that mixes the samba of that time (which somewhat resembled Bossa Nova) with African influences; all the songs speak of the Orixás, who are the gods of some of the african peoples who were brought to Brazil at the time of the slave trade.

I don't know why I tried to contextualize what is what, but I think that music is never "just music". : )
