I've been using Windows 8 since the first Beta, I didn't like it at first, but once I got used to it, I preferred it for everything. The 'Modern UI' doesn't get in the way, sometimes I just think of it as a better looking Start Menu. I have had no problems with my games, and with some, like Burnout Paradise, they actually crash less on Windows 8 than 7.

Why can't people read and reply on the subject? OP said "I liked the style of Windows 8". Why do people argue about that style, when the question was how games run?
Games performance comparison: Tom's, post at Game Debate.

But you know what? If you run the same games with AA enabled, the performance on windows 8 dops dramatically and when compared with windows 7, so the performance with AA enabled is in fact slightly lower. I don't know about you, but i like to play my games with AA enabled. I have personally tested Far Cry 3 with Ultra settings (of course AA enabled) and on windows 7 it runs smooth, on windows 8 i noticed at least 20% performance decrease.

Tom's tested with 4xAA. Performance does change per game and settings, and I'm sure it also changes based on hardware and driver. I imagine that performance has gone up since Windows 8's release, due to drivers maturing, but haven't really seen any figures, so can't say for sure.

Win 7 definitely, no point of having a Win 8 without a touch-screen. Since Win 8's interface is designed for touch-screens.

I know, thats not the question here in this thread .... but :D
I personally never used the crapy old startmenu (xp, vista / win7) - This menu was absolute bloated.
Somebody really used the start menu to start a program on regular basis? Com on - i´ve never done! :D I used icons on the desktop - and i promisse that everybody with a little bit of windows knowledge have done this too!
The new Windows 8 Start-Menu is AWESOME! Why? Because now i have all my icons from the Desktop in the organized Startmenu. I really like that, because i´m now faster than ever finding and opening software. Only hit the Windows-Key on the Keyboard ... tadaa!
... and now the answer for your Question: Windows 8, because is´t Window 7 enhanced!

this really made my day bro xD

You're right, anyone with just a little bit of win knowlege uses icons on desktop. Those with more usually dont (exceptions exist). My "zero icons" desktop is happy without em. My start menu is happy with pinned programs easily accessible and search bar for others.

I have some icons on my desktop - but most of my every day programs are either pinned on the taskbar or on the Start menu.

I can't complain about either of the start menus. On 7 to keep my desktop clean I had some programs pinned to start menu, and I always searched for other programs there. On 8 I just go straight to searching for it, I like my interface clean, so I don't keep shortcuts on the start.

I personally would choose Win 8.For me it performs (including gaming) and boots faster than Win 7 on the same Hardware. I use Win 8 since Beta and have a Touchscreen, but i actually never used Metro, first thing after starting my PC is switching to Desktop Mode.
I never really used the start menu, so i don't miss it, all programs i use are in the taskbar. But i heard Win 8.1 will bring back start menu and fix other stuff Win 7 users are missing, regarding it will be a free update it is worth switching to Win 8 now.
Gaming compatibility is a non-issue for me, too. Every game i tried ran flawlessly, If there had been issues, they already had been ther on Win 7.
Don't get me wrong, i am not a Microsoft Fanboy, nor do i like or use Metro, but i really prefer 8 over 7. Eventually there will be games exclusive to Win 8 (due to DirectX restrictions or whatever)so you should take that in mind too.
tl;dr: I prefer Win 8.

Personally I still use 7 on 2 PCs since I have some projects in work and cannot upgrade and I am planning to dual boot Windows 8 for dev reasons but I did try it for a few months and to be honest Windows 8 is a good OS if you manage to get pass Modern UI (some maya actually like it).
So I kinda recommend you to first try Windows 8 before installing or wait for Windows 8.1 and try it first (2 months and it's out) since you alone can decide what OS suits you best.
You can disable ModernUI with SkipMetroSuite and get a free start button or go for Stardock Start8.
Also, you have to keep in mind that Windows 7 comes with .NET framework 4/4.5 only and you should install 3.5 yourself since many apps use it.
As for games, I didn't encounter any problems or performance issues, only a few games that refused to run until I installed .NET framework 3.5 and of course, DirectX 9c.

Windows 8 killed compatibility with a large number of old classic games I own and are completely unplayable, whereas Windows 7 either naturally supports them or only requires minor tweaks to get them working right. Windows 8 does have a fast boot time (slightly), but I found that Windows 7 ran my games faster generally. I used the same laptop with two different hard-drives (same model, just opposite OS on each one), and my games were running off a third USB hard-drive.
Also, as it's been said, the Metro UI is ugly, reminiscent of Windows 3.1, suited only for touch-screen devices, impractical if you're a modder or developer like I am, and Windows 8 offers no other positive changes aside from some very minor DirectX tweaks, most of which are now available for Windows 7 as well.

I liked Windows 8. Fast load time speed, simple style, small increase in FPS in some games. I don't use Modern UI because of uselessness for me (I have a PC desktop). All games which I have in Steam perfectly work. And some piracy games aren't launched. I used Windows 7, then was updated to Windows 8, and I am not sorry.
P.S. Excuse for possible errors in the text, I badly I know English. I use the translator.

I bought a new Windows 8 PC, a cheap one, not a gaming PC, and I liked the style of Windows 8, so I was thinking of buying them for my gaming PC. I haven't tested out any games on the other computer, and I don't think I will... So, I wonder, do you think it's better for a gaming PC (RAM-wise, or anything else) to have Windows 7 or 8? I'm asking that because Vista was a very bad edition for a gaming PC with 4GB ram (thankfully I got my 7 soon), so I don't want this to happen with 8 as well... From what I've seen, Windows 8 isn't heavy, but since I am too bored to get into learning all the details, I wonder if someone has already got an answer about it... I was hoping I could test the Windows 8 on my PC, but the key is locked in the BIOS of the other computer (good job Gate...).
