So with this update you are trying to show us all that we misjudged you?Is this the whole purpose of your "update" to show us that you are actually a good guy? You can actually do something good go and contact the seller explain to him the situation and offer to him just to send the price shown on the price tag to his paypal.?

I think the person who posted on ebay did not realize that it could be redeemed on Steam and i am not sure if Prey had online for the key to really matter and even it did i am sure by now it is long dead.

Either way the OP stole the key as they did not have permission to use it.Though at least they removed it but i suspect only because of regret of not liking it not a moral thing as if they where using them they would have not did it from the start.Still it was a dick move.Sure it did not say if the key was used or not on Steam but what if someone contacts them and asked if it has and they said no and someone buys it on the basis? They will call the seller a liar and maybe leave bad feedback and so on.

Either way it is used not little that can be done.

Well then good for them...

Though in the end it is the OP fault for making it public that they took it and helped this seller out more then i think they figured. If they did not admit to doing it there would be little the seller could have done as far as legal stand point because him just having a pic of the key does not prove he took the key from Ebay.Someone else could have got the key and sold it to them for example.Since they admitted guilt of taking it though he may have in fact hung himself.

  1. What kind of idiot posts a picture with a key in it? Even if this didn't allow it to be activated on Steam anyone using torrents to get their games could have downloaded some "cracked" version and used the key to make it legit instead.

  2. What kind of idiot admits that they are a bad person to a bunch of his peers because he basically stole a key? I would have tried to contact the seller and tell him that he might want to edit the key from his pic. I'm pretty sure that there is SOMEONE else in this world who also saw the key and could have done the same as the OP but they had morals and were honest.

I cleared my Blacklist awhile back with the intention of not using it. Thanks to the OP for restoring my faith in idiocy again. You have been rewarded. Don't get a big head and think that you are special.

and? So if I go on SCAM rampage, scam hundreds of users, brag about it on SG, heck - maybe even scam items just to make GAs with them - should I be fine as long as I just make sure to check that none of people I scam have SG account? Imho scammer is a scammer. No mater if I scam people on Trade section or if I scam them on some other website. If I'm proven to be a scammer, even better - if I admit to being a scammer and to scamming from other people I should not be allowed into this community. It doesn't make huim any less guilty that he scammed from some random dude, not someone who is on SG...

You shouldn't if you didn't fail to meet any of SteamGifts' guidelines or terms of service. And he didn't, except for his non-activation.

About the stealing and scamming part, I was just correcting your misuse of words. Stealing is no better than scamming and I never expressed the contrary.

And I wouldn't be fine with it obviously, and I never said I would. Though, it isn't in the rules.

you would be punished by Steam (and possibly actual law enforcement), but not by SG

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

we're discussing SG here. What other repercusions tere are elsewhere is unrelated. If I scam you you have the right to perform legal actions - you can report me to police, report me to Steam, report me on SteamRep - so I should not be suspended on SG and be free to scam again here, because I may be punished elsewhere already? Should we unsuspend any permabanned Scammer who got tagged on SteamRep? Because they already got punished on SteamRep - why should we punish them as well? Well because Scamming/Stealing is against the basic principles of this community. We should not want scammers here regardless if they scam from fellow SG users or just Scam from people elsewhere than SG Trades section. Ofc we should not jump into cuonclusions and permaban anyone who got reported elsewhere. But in this particular case OP admitted to stealing himself.

I understand why you would want that but AFAIK this is how any online entity works. They'll punish you for violating THEIR T.O.S., not anybody else's, linked as the communities may be.

no, because people post these keys concieously for others to take. If you take something from someone who offers it to you for free it's not a theft. If you take something from someone unaware it is a theft.

If you visit me at my house and comment "wow, that's some nice and fancy wine glass" and I say to you "hey man, if you like it you can have it, I have 7 mpore of these" - you are not stealing it, it's not a theft. If you wait for opportunity and when I go to toilet you take the glass and hide it in your bag - you are commiting a theft. Clearly Auction creator was not willing to give awqay key freely to anyone who want's it, he was intending to sell it, he made a mistake - but it doesn't change the fact that OP stole a key from him and OP is a thief.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

the blatant difference is intent. keys posted in the forum are being given away intentionally. the ebay seller just made a careless mistake.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes a theft. The fact that there is an opportunity to commit a crime doesn't mean that you are free to commit a crime or that there is no crime. If you leave your wallet at the table and I come to it and take all your money am I not stealing from you because you gave me an oportunity? If you leave your bike in front of a store and forget to chain it am I free to jump on and drive away? Because you gave me an opportunity so I didn't commit a theft? If you leave your credit card at the bar and I copy (aka steal) your CC number and CVV2 code and then use it to buy myself thousands of dollars of stuff is it ok? Because you gave me an opportunity to steal your CC info so I am free to use it and take your money from you and it's fine?

A theft is a theft. It does NOT cease to be a theft just because the victim is a moron. If everyone though like you do, the wrld would be a much darker place than it already is.

Funny there was a case like this in the UK where someone posted a gambling slip where they had won and someone redeemed the code from the photo.
Was the poster stupid? Yes. Did the person who redeemed the slip get arrested? Yes, because it's theft. The slip did not belong to them and they redeemed it.
If you walk into a shop and someone has scratched the codes off of Apple gifts cards and you use one without buying it, do you really believe you're not stealing?

Note that the suspension is called "Scamming Users". Not "Scamming", but specifically "Scamming Users"
I think it would be overzealous to hold someone accountable for something that has nothing to do with SG. It's like if we suspended for not activating a game won on SteamCompanion.

Of course we could do that (from the ToS, " SteamGifts may terminate your access to all or any part of the Website at any time, with or without cause, with or without notice, effective immediately"). I wasn't saying we can't do it, but that I think we shouldn't.

If you were in my place what would you do? Just stare at it?

I would contact the seller and inform him he is an idiot and needs to censor the code. The code isn't mine, nor is it being given away. I have no right to activate it, and it would be against my morals to do so even if everyone else justifies with the excuse "It's just the internet".

By that time somebody else would've activated it probably,so the guy selling it would've been screwed anyways,it's really seller's fault for not being aware of what he was doing and playing dumb, this guy capitalized off of that, even tho it's " against morals " he can still do it ,but posting it on a forum to look like a cool kid wasn't the best idea.

The thing is, he didn't even capitalize off of it. He just activated it and then got Steam to remove the game from his library. It was a complete waste of a game.

Well, assuming he listed it for 30 days (as there are 28 days left on the listing and 30 just makes sense), it probably would've been up for 36 hrs or more before the OP took the key, so it seems pretty plausible that the seller could've covered it before someone else came along and took it if the OP had told him the key was visible instead of just taking it for himself. It's even more plausible seeing as how quickly he took down the picture after people from this forum informed him of what happened.

EDIT: Edited for clarity!

That's not what I meant, I was saying that if the OP (or someone else) had warned the seller that the key was shown in the picture, the seller would have had time to cover it up before someone else took it.

This was to refute what antipativome said about the key going to be taken even if the OP had warned him.
