Hello guys.
I'm considering buying Subnautica: Below Zero EA on Epic Games Store because of that 10$ off during sales. As I saw, on Steam never went that low, and I don't know if it can go under that on Steam Summer sales considering it's on early access.
So... ignoring it is on EGS instead of Steam (a fact that I don't really like, but I can live with it xD), do you think it's a good deal or not?
Thank you!

PD: Please, avoid answers complaining about Epic, I prefer Steam by far but if Epic has better offers, I'll buy there.

UPDATE: After reading all the comments and being warned about facts that I haven't considered before this post, I finally dedided to buy it even though I know that Epic is pretty new and might not survive like Steam does. Thanks a lot to everyone, especially the ones that posted argued opinions instead of "no" or "don't buy just because it's Epic". Have a nice day :)

Would you buy it?

Yes, it's a good deal.
No, it'd probably go under that on Steam Summer sales

I have no problem with you buying from Epic, or Origin, or UPlay, or wherever, if you don't mind the different launchers, go wherever it's cheaper

However, I'd be a little wary about Epic, because I don't know if they can sustain themselves, or if it will be another Desura.
Epic made a conscientious move away from traditional gaming to GaaS, and sold a 40% stake to Tencent to do so. It certainly paid off with Fortnite generating stupid money, and through their percentage based licensing of the unreal engine. Now they're investing oodles of money to try and carve out some of Steam's business, which would fit their business model perfectly.

However, at some point, either the Epic store will be able to stand on its own, or Tencent and Tim Sweeney are going to decide to stop pumping more money into it. If the store can't stand on its own, they might pull the plug entirely, and go the way of Desura.

To sum up, at this point, Epic is only able to survive as a store because Epic is willing to invest a lot of money to steal some of the market from Steam. But if the store doesn't start generating enough profit to survive on its own, it will fail.

Funny fact, I just noticed Desura bankrupted xD
I hope it can stay alive because having a bit of competition between platforms almost always benefits the user.
Thanks for the information, I'll have it in mind if I ended buying it.

personally, I'd be all for competition between platforms, if there weren't platform exclusives. I haven't bought any EA games because I want all my games in one place, steam. it reminds me of console exclusives, where you're missing out on great games because they won't make it for your console.

Well, at least pc exclusives can be played on the same physical platform, you don't have to spend 400$ to play them on another console, just download the platform and play xD
But I understand what you mean.

I thought about utilizing the $10 off deal but ultimately there's nothing I absolutely must have right now, at least not enough to make it worth it for me.

I am curious to see what the update schedule is on both platforms (if not the same), it being early access and all. That and I don't know if multiplayer will work between the two (if that's planned for this game, or if you even care about such things). There's a chance the store could go under but ultimately if it does you're only out one game (for now), so you're only out ten bucks or so. If that happens, you'd probably be done with it by then anyway.

All that being said, apparently it was already $10 on the EGS a couple weeks ago without the $10 off deal according to ITAD, so will it hit that on Steam? Probably not the same amount due to the different cuts the stores take (10% vs 30% is it?), but if they're looking to get the same amount of return on it, it's possible that we'd see it for $14 or so on the Steam store.

Now whether or not the possibility of a sale that may or may not happen is worth waiting for is up to you ;)

I don't really care about multiplayer, but I didn't even consider that feature before you mention it, so thanks for mentioning.
Honestly, after reading all the answers on this post about being hard to reach that discount on Steam, I think I'd prefer to buy it for less than 7€ on Epic now, rather than waiting for a 14$ sale on Steam, because there is a huge difference between them in my opinion, and I don't need to stick to Steam like other people seems to need xD.
Thanks for your opinion :)

I say go for it. My preference is steam as well, but for games that aren’t there or that I really don’t want to wait for the exclusive period to end, I’ll buy on Epic. I got the final season of The Walking Dead for $5, which I think is fantastic. If I didn’t already know the Quantic Dream games we’re coming to Steam, I’d likely have picked one or more up (but I don’t mind waiting in this case). As far as the Steam sale goes, I don’t imagine you’ll see a better price than the $10 credit gives you.

I considered buying TWD too for a friend xD
I agree with you, like most people that answered this post (ignoring those that only came to complain about Epic instead of rating the deal).

Bought it and have no regrets. And I assume people voting against the purchase are rather upset about Epic than that they truly believe that the game will be cheaper on Steam anytime soon.

Yeah, I noticed that, I regreted not listing two different options for "no" xD
That's why I'm reading comments instead of paying attention to the poll, and most of them are positive about the deal so... I'll probably buy it.
Thanks for yor answer :)

to stay on topic: it is a good deal and i don't think steam will match the roughly 60% you save with the epic discount right now.
i think the poll needed a bit more options and most people just voted no because epic games store.

I don't know if it is because of the country but Subnautica Below Zero is U$ 9.99 and the U$ 10.00 discount is only for games that cost U$ 14.99+.

As far as I know by reading another comments, BZ is about 20$ on America and so, and it reaches 10$ price using Epic's discount (I didn't checked by myself so I might be wrong, I'm from Spain and the price in euros is 16,79€, 6,79€ after applying the discount)

If you think it's a good deal and you wanna play the game. Buy it and go have fun!

Usually people here give decent advice, but when it comes to Epic, it's better to avoid asking because they will argument against Epic itself and forget that the question was about the game.

why buy things on EPIC store when they install you an spyware on your computer without your consent?

I wouldn't basically because Epic has not earned my trust yet and because of the lack of regional prices, the dollar conversion to my currency fucks me hard. But it seems that you end up paying even less money, so yeah go for it!

That's the main reason to be unsure about buying there, many people mentioned it and I have it in mind.
And yeah, seems like my conversion favors me xD

It's not just about not liking Epic. If their store is unsuccessful and eventually closes then what happens to your library? If you think that can't happen because Epic has billions and billions of dollars, just look at Games for Windows Live (owned by Microsoft). Will Epic or the devs offer Steam keys to replace all the games you bought from them? I did read when GFWL went down a fair amount of devs did offer Steam keys to customers but there's no guarantee all your games will be replaceable. I doubt that Epic themselves would offer Steam keys because of the animosity they've displayed towards Steam. It seems like they would have too much pride to do that. That's one of several reasons why I prefer Steam, because it's very unlikely they will go away anytime soon, and why I don't want to buy anything from Epic -- besides having a practically featureless game client and store. They have terrible policies. They engage in anti-consumer practices (exclusives).

But if all you care about is playing the game then go ahead and buy it. $10 is a good deal. Just don't expect.....anything... from Epic.

Yep, I consider that possibility as many people warned me about it, but I don't think I'll be really upset if Epic disappear in a few years, as long as I can play the game now.
I don't expect anything from Epic, the free games they are offering which are from my wishlist are more than I could expect xD and well, it's even cheaper here (Spain), with the conversion it's 6,79€.

OP has already made up his mind. Admittedly yes it'll probably be the best price in euro for a while, Subnautica's company doesn't seem to put much discount on their games either, only 30% recently plus the price increase and 50% historical during EA. Get it if you really need to play it now.

Personally, on top of avoiding Epic's anti-consumer exclusivity actions, Sub Below zero is "50% off" at $10 on epic for me, which I'm sure will be that price on steam in a year or two. I'm in no hurry to either wait for Epic to be less of a jerk or for the discount on Steam.

If it's forcing exclusivity, then I just won't buy the game, simple. I've got enough of a backlog anyways.

Well, Subnautica has been on Epic since the beginning, if they didn't get the exclusive by now, I don't think they will, but I might be wrong.
Anyway, thanks for your answer :)

Seems like a pretty good deal to me. As to concerns you might have I'd consider:

  • Epic's platform is very basic at the moment, but it works fine for me. Epic is creator of Unreal Engine, so my guess is they will survive. I miss game reviews or discussion boards over there, but I suspect that will evolve.
  • I like the idea that a higher % of the revenue from sales goes to developers at Epic. I understand it's 12% commission to sell via Epic vs. 30% at Valve, so more money to developers seems like something worth supporting.
  • I like competition across distribution channels, and Epic is trying hard with free games and nice sales. My guess is Steam sales this year might be better due to the competition Epic and others are providing, so you might get extra benefit by supporting both stores ;-)

good luck
