theres really no difference anymore, because everyone plays games nowadays and pc gaming is much more accessible because both males and females use it for everyday stuff so id be very surprised to hear its not something close to 50-50
not to mention, last mmo i played i was in a somewhat big guild where top 10-ish positions were occupied by female players so im kind of used to it though :P

Games are games. Casual, Hardcore, they're all games. Get over it.

people discriminating others because they aren't "hardcore" enough. *facepalm +1*
stop repeating what you see in forums, think a bit on your own. the "i'm hardcore and you are casual" trend is stupid.
you don't need to be 8 hours per day playing dark souls or ranked LoL to be considered a gamer. even someone playing phone, wii or emulated NES games is a gamer...

Only lame people identify themselves as "gamers", but going to a videogames group gather because you play facebook or mobile games is just as awkward as like going to a crack party and drinking coffee (because technically, caffeine is a drug). Just saying' ...

I've played online with many female gamers, specially in MMOs and COOP games, but I'm sad to say not many were from my country. My personal view is that there were more of them back when we played Quake 2/3 than there is now (or there were less gamers in total so it was more easy to notice a female gamer back then).
While there are some HC female gamers here, dedicated to D&D, WH and other tabletop/wargames as much as computer games, most girls/women in this backward country think that playing games is something for kids and consider it stupid... while watching soap operas and realities all the time themselves.

In this thread, people who can't read statistics or interpret what people are saying.
OT: Probably 50/50. I'm betting a good portion of females gamers are casuals however.
I'd be more interesting in a statistics on Dota 2, CS:GO, CoD, Mario, etc.

The "casual" gamer is the mainstream, because the vast majority of people do things casually. The "hardcore" gaming crowd, which has traditionally been largely dominated by males, is a niche and will always remain a niche. It is not shrinking though, rather it's also still growing and probably including more females in the mix as gaming in general has reached a larger audience. But the "casual" crowd is growing leaps and bounds beyond it and is, in my opinion, potentially the golden ticket for gaming to reach the next level of wide cultural acceptance and to be taken as a more serious medium and art form. Obviously the current rut of f2p and meaningless Skinner Box games designed to milk wallets by preying on human weakness are not advancing the medium to new heights, but for a game to reach a level of critical success and distribution akin to the ease and acceptance with which people receive books, movies, and TV, the game and method of distribution needs to be tailored and marketed to a broader, more general, audience. It all has to start somewhere, and the first gaming company or distribution/marketing/publishing house to recognize this, take some risks, and create a 10/10 game that resonates and pleases EVERYONE, easily available on all platforms while eschewing some semblance of artistic/literary integrity (ie, not Angry Birds) is going to bring the gaming industry to the next level, which necessarily will include males, females, and everybody inbetween.

I'm Greek. Well, we are mostly male gamers here, but we're mostly playing football related games (I'm talking about the real football, not the 'Murican one). :P

Why do people always ask this question? It always ends up with people arguing if playing facebook and mobile games make you a "real" gamer.

Last night I asked my wife -- who plays a lot of phone games and Facebook games (a couple hours a day usually) -- if she considers herself a gamer. She does have her own Steam account (with about 100 or so games, I believe) but rarely uses it anymore. She even has her own gaming rig -- a nice custom modded one (by me) - water-cooled, GTX 680, gaming mouse/KB, etc.
She replied, without hesitation, "No, I only play games on my phone and sometimes Facebook." Then I said "Yeah but you sometimes play games on your PC", to which she replied "Not enough to call myself a gamer." (Looking back, I should have asked how much she thinks someone has to play to be a "gamer.")
When I explained to her why I had asked, she said "Those people (referring to phone and Facebook) aren't gamers. They're just wasting time like I am." I then stated "Yeah, but all games are just wasting your free time." Then she says "But would you call someone who plays Tic-Tac-Toe all day a gamer?" shock
I just thought it was interesting to see how my wife felt about the games she plays, and get her perspective on things. In all honesty, I fully expected her to say she's a gamer. O.o During the entire conversation, she was playing some city-building game on her phone.
It all boils down to perspective, I suppose ...
