What should I buy?
Yeah I think I'm just greedy with wanting a large selection of games. I love all sorts of genres so my mood changes a lot! Yeah I think I'm happy enough at least with my 970 for now. It does the job :D

Looks like the best idea is to save the money. A hardware upgrade at the moment is not worth it. I remember few years back("the good old days"), in the days of Haswell and GTX 700 series GPUs upgrading was worth it and not fu*ked up(or building a new PC). Now RAM and SSD prices are a bit too high, Intel is pumping new series of CPUs like crazy, not to mention recent problems with meltdown and spectre - although Ryzen is not a bad choice and it is kinda worth it. Aaand GPU prices are ridiculous due to damn miners and other circumstances. Overall just save up the money or spend them on something not gaming/computer related. Maybe treat yourself with a nice vacation or spend the money or other hobbies. Wish I had extra money to cough on a sweet new desktop.

Yeah I think this may be the worst time to buy... I didn't realise or think about there being a spike in the price for it. Oh well, I'm happy enough, just because I had the extra cash I thought why not!

Well I didn't say I need it. Thats the whole point in extra money, its for buying the luxury things I don't need. Bills are paid, rent is paid, foods on the table, travel expenses are sorted and money has been put aside in my saving account! So now... Shopping sprees!

Need is maybe a wrong word. Want is probably better. If you use a lot of public transport maybe get a Switch? People are raving about it all the time. If you don't need 60 fps on highest setting all the time your current pc is good enough. You don't have any other hobbies? If you really want to spend it buy yourself a chair or something.

250$ worth of WaBi and 250$ worth of Substratum, in a year, you will thank me

If I were you, I would just save the money for the future, as you seem to have everything you really need. So it may be a good idea to wait for an actual good reason to spend your money.
Switch is an extremely cheap console, as usual with recent Nintendo's consoles it looks like a [robust] toy but it's sold like it's made of gold; so if you really really really want to play Zelda, Mario, Fire Emblem or whatever, then you should buy it; otherwise wait for the price to drop, maybe the next year when there will be more games.
As for the GPU, being the only thing you may want to update on your system, a 970 can handle most VR games, but as you said it's the bare minimum, so if you really really REALLY want to play a lot of VR games, you could get a 1070 (it's perfect for VR), or a 1070 Ti eventually. Problem is that GPUs are so expensive right now because of cryptomining, so considering you don't have the urge to get a new card, you may want to wait for prices to stabilize again (or just wait for the Volta architecture to drop in the next months).
Save the money!

don't upgrade anything !!
wait to see how vega & stuff coming up (7nm)
maybe nvidia would also release 1090 soon along
and that would reduce the price of the older ones
or u might just go for vega if price is great for the specs given !
i myself also waiting to see (my first plan was to finally buy a whole new PC, but then seems in 2019 we should get 7nm cpu as well so my plan might have to extended if i'm not going with zen4 in this upcoming april)

If I was you I'd go for the Switch. I already spent about 500 hours on its games (looong way to get to work) so it's worth its price.

buy bitcoins (500$), then sell bitcoins. repeat it N times - and you have 1000$ :)

This beautiful shirt, of course.
Ah, wait you're talking about computers.
Wait a bit and then buy a next-gen second hand GPU for half the retail price.

Quite simple: Keep the money. :)
And here comes the reasoning from an old geezer who has been in this situation himself over and over again in his younger days:
As a general rule: If you feel like asking others what you could spend it on (as opposed to "I need/want XY, which one is the best for my situation?"), you are usually better of saving the money. Especially since you seem to put some money away for a house deposit anyway.
The one thing that is for certain is that nothing is for certain. For that reason it is good to have something stored away if the proverbial shit hits the fan. Even then nothing is ever really safe, but at least you have more room to maneuver and more options to draw from.
And, as an added bonus: If you come across something you would really want or need at a later point, you have an additional 500 quid to draw from. :)
Don't go and buy just because you can:

So I've worked a lot over Christmas and been paid way more than I thought and bills were cheap. So bills are paid and now it's time to spend. I've put aside 500 quid for whatever i want and I'll save the rest for a house deposit.

Purchased it almost 4 years ago now I think. I own an Occulus so I'm just hitting minimum for it I think.
Another purchase could be a Switch although I already own a PC with 600 games, PS4 with games I haven't played like Bloodborne and Horizon Zero Dawn etc and a 3DS with... a lot of games as I share it with my partner.
Also there is just steam games I could buy. No giveaways cause I've given enough. I won't link my wishlist cause idiots will think I'm begging despite the fact i have plenty of money and I've rejected 3 gifts this week.
Also other suggestions are welcome :)
