I agree with the ones who said Bastion, Legacy of Kane series was awesome, Broken Sword, Little Inferno (Seriously give this game a try, it is well worth the small investment and if you absolutely, positively don't have the money, the devs left it DRM-free and said they don't discourage people from downloading a torrent of the game just that if they wind up with enough to buy the game they would appreciate it.)

Actually, GTA IV, it's not great story or something, but if you play it regularly, you become Nico, and at the end of the game i had really difficult choice, i think that was one of best endings, but not happy at all (i hate happy endings). Also Mass Effect have really great story, sometimes sad, sometimes ridiculous, and not really bad ending. Portal 2, Deus Ex : Human Revolution (other parts was great too)Hmm, Also Warhammer 40k Dawn of War I and II with Chaos rising (Strange, but i've finished it at least twice and i've never skipped cutscene) Bioshock? Yes, one of best action games, but, well, it is all about hunting bad man and get the hell out of there, so i can't say it have awesome storyline

Not gonna say already mentioned games:
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West - pretty decent story
Borderlands 2 - made me sorry for Bloodwing :/
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jdedi Academy - if I remember correctly it has a good story.
Gears of War series.

To the moon! :3
The most recent one I can think of.

Psychonauts made me ROFL, Braid's ending (non-star, may have to use strategy guid to find them) blew my mind, and I nearly cried towards the end of GTA4 (The airport scene. That was the hardest decision I've ever made in a video game.) I'm looking around to play more games with awesome stories, so that means I need to start playing Bastion and many other games in my library I haven't touched.

Which Blizzard games? WarCraft and Diablo series, in my opinion, don't have anything in a way of a story. And I don't think Lost Vikings or Rock'n'Roll Racing were better in that regard, although I don't remember them much.
P.S. And who's that Nuff whom people quote so often?!

Both Warcraft and Diablo have amazing stories - D3 was a shit game, but the thread was about stories and story-wise All Warcrafts and Diablos have been good, they tend to pull you in so you actually care about the main characters.
Lost Vikings, well I guess it's not to everyones taste - but for that time you can appreciate the story.

If my memory serves me correctly, Diablo plot involves great evil rising from imprisonment and threatening to destroy the world. Nameless and speechless hero stands in its way, hero whom we know nothing about and whom doesn't evolve or develop in any way.
WarCraft series has elaborate lore. I don't know for which it was written but first and second game's plot was "kill all enemies because they are bad" and had no protagonist. Or I just don't recall one.

go read the book of cain for some Diablo Lore(while the game was disappointing for D3.. it still was good, just didn't reach the hype it had at ALL).. wasn't there another Diablo book released as well that I need to go read?
its alot more than what you said

There is a difference between lore and story. Story is a sequence of events and how they affect characters, lore is just a history of the world that often has no effect on the game.
Now, in Diablo story goes like this. Nameless hero arrives in a town and set off on a crusade against Diablo. End of story. The only conflict arises after Diablo is defeated.
P.S. I just want to make clear that good story should be entirely in a game itself.

Baldur's Gate 1&2 and Planescape: Torment.
I still replay these games a decade later and am still amazed at what they've done.

I don't tell anything about The Walking Dead, Fahrenheit and Heavy Rain. It's interactive movies. Movies MUST have awesome stories. And yeah. They have awesome stories.
Of course, Deus Ex. It's just best game in almost everything and including storyline. I don't mean 2nd one. It's so poor game and story and especially ending just awful (original ending not so bad but others...).
Bioware - masters in RPG games and storylines too. I can't say what Mass Effect and Dragon Age: awesome stories. It's very good but not perfect. But Knights of the Old Republic story (both of em) is really awwesome.
Kane&Lynch: Dead Men. Awesome story and I played (and replay) this game just because of story. I can't tell about 2nd what it's good, because this story don't continue story from 1st game.
Max Payne. Great noir story, which I'm always ready to replay and "feel" it again. But I don't like story in 2nd (like Deus Ex). Just don't like. Even 3rd, which tells about Brazil, better.
The Darkness. Both of em have awesome gangster + mystic +love stories. Always ready to replay this game.
Also very good story have Half-life (all of em), F.E.A.R. (all of em), Assassin's Creed (only 1st), Painkiller (only 1st), Call of Duty (1st, 2nd, 4th, 9th), Alan Wake, Mafia (both), Dark Messiah, System Shock (both), Shank (only 1st).
But from popular games I don't like stories: BioShock (I just don't like this game. And especially story), Dishonored (I'm like this game. It's very good clone of Deus Ex + BioShock, but story not so good), Hitman, Portal (Portal should be finished on 1st game, when they just need explain connection between Aperture Science and Half-Life (Borei), but they even didn't do that), GTA (all of em), Elder Scroll and Fallout (Fallout 1st and 2nd have nice story, but Bethesda f**ked up with Fallout, because it's just "post apocalypse" Elder Scrolls. And I just hate Elder Scrolls, especially story.

I just have to say that I find second Max Payne significantly better than first one. As some reviewer said Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is Casablanca of video games. I haven't played third one much yet, but from what I've seen of it it's not noir anymore.

What's the best games you've played thus far, in terms of the in-game story?
How the story in the game touched you emotionally, or mentally, such as games that might make you went mindf*cked like The Walking Dead? or games that have touched you emotionally, even made you cry? :p
These games focus on the stories rather than the gameplay itself. Some might even argue these games are not worthy to be called games because they're just too focused on stories, etc.
Share us your pick. It doesn't always have to be those AAA title games, there are lots of games i'm sure you can recommend, indie for example.
So, what's your pick? :D
I appreciate all of your recommendations. :)
