My father died a week ago. He was 80 years young. He died while playing Solitaire Master 5 on his PC, which, to put an alarmist twist on it, shows the grave danger of playing PC games.

He was healthy and sharp, and it was a real shock for us. Only the week before I watched Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets with him.

He was a good man, who was always happy to help, and loved to learn and share what he learned. He will be missed by many.

Edit: I want to thank everyone for their thoughts. It's nice to see so much support. I've been at SG for over 5 years, and it's the only community I regularly visit these days. I posted only here about this. I was touched by the response, so thank you.

(Sorry if it will take me some time to respond to posts here.)

Edit 2: Interestingly, I got on a few whitelists and blacklists due to this topic (more whitelists than blacklists). Not sure why, but it's an interesting part of being on SG.

So sorry to hear this. My Dad is 78, and same kind of thing...he still flies airplanes, works on them every day with his friends, and is sharp as a tack (even if he falls asleep on the couch a little more easily than he used to - lol).

I wish you and your family peace as you work through this time...it's never easy, but knowing that your Dad had a good life and left it still doing something that he enjoyed is hopefully some comfort.

A colleague of mine who's a gamer (more at heart than in practice, like me, due to age and family, but he's also into the dev scene) said that dying while playing a game is the way he wants to go. I can appreciate the sentiment.

My most sincere condolences... It doesn't get easier, just because we grow older u.u losing a beloved person always hurts. I hope you have people with you right now and from reading your words, I'm glad you can remember all the good and wonderful things about him. And, at least you can remember, that's something we should always be grateful for. We have our memories and once the pain subsides, they will still be there, forever.

at least you can remember

That kind of worries me. I have bad memory, and I don't recall a lot of my life (and what I do remember is pretty vague). I'm a little worried that my memories of him will fade too quickly. This period did help me recall some things, so that's good.

My dad died when I was just three years old. I basically remember nothing from back then, expect this tiny little memory of him, when he was already in the hospital. He called me his princess and I we ate some cookies. I guess I keep this memory, because at this moment, I felt that he lovers me, although he couldn't be with us anymore.
Believe me, no matter how bad your memory might be, there will always be something left of him in your heart, and no matter how tiny it seems, you will remember. You might forget how he looks, unless you see a picture, you might forget his voice and the sound of his laughter, but you'll never loose your love for him, how much he meant to you and that he loved you as well.
I know, this might sound depressing and I'm sorry ._. but what I try to say is, that there are things, so deeply ingrained in your heart, that you'll never need to worry about loosing them. You can't forget them, because they are a part of you.
