That's very sad. At least my father was there to see my children.
His father died of cancer when he was 8, and when he approached his father's age he was worried that he might get it too, but thankfully he remained healthy and died at a respectable age.

I really don't know what to say, because I don't think there's anything one could say that could be right. I hope you remember him fondly and let him live on through those memories

On the contrary, I think that all the posts here are right, and yours certainly is. As long as someone isn't trolling, then offering condolences, sharing experiences and even making jokes (preferably alongside condolences) are fine by me.
And I certainly remember him fondly. I know many people who had difficulties with their parents, and I'm happy that both my father and my mother were/are easy people to get along with.

He sounds like a great guy. You were lucky to have him and, as far I can tell, the world lost a little light. I only hope that the love he spread lives on.

Note to self: Don't play Solitaire Master 5

I agree with peterlol, but it did put in mind that Solitaire Master is probably the gift I gave that was played the most. I bought him Solitaire Master 4 many years ago (when it was in stores; when PC games were in many stores), then bought 5 on eBay when I upgraded him to Windows 7 (since 4 wasn't compatible).
He put thousands on hours into that game; probably over 10,000 hours.

My father died a week ago. He was 80 years young. He died while playing Solitaire Master 5 on his PC, which, to put an alarmist twist on it, shows the grave danger of playing PC games.
He was healthy and sharp, and it was a real shock for us. Only the week before I watched Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets with him.
He was a good man, who was always happy to help, and loved to learn and share what he learned. He will be missed by many.
Edit: I want to thank everyone for their thoughts. It's nice to see so much support. I've been at SG for over 5 years, and it's the only community I regularly visit these days. I posted only here about this. I was touched by the response, so thank you.
(Sorry if it will take me some time to respond to posts here.)
Edit 2: Interestingly, I got on a few whitelists and blacklists due to this topic (more whitelists than blacklists). Not sure why, but it's an interesting part of being on SG.
