My father died a week ago. He was 80 years young. He died while playing Solitaire Master 5 on his PC, which, to put an alarmist twist on it, shows the grave danger of playing PC games.

He was healthy and sharp, and it was a real shock for us. Only the week before I watched Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets with him.

He was a good man, who was always happy to help, and loved to learn and share what he learned. He will be missed by many.

Edit: I want to thank everyone for their thoughts. It's nice to see so much support. I've been at SG for over 5 years, and it's the only community I regularly visit these days. I posted only here about this. I was touched by the response, so thank you.

(Sorry if it will take me some time to respond to posts here.)

Edit 2: Interestingly, I got on a few whitelists and blacklists due to this topic (more whitelists than blacklists). Not sure why, but it's an interesting part of being on SG.

im not sure what you mean by there being a 'grave danger of playing PC games' but i'm sorry for your loss. he lived a decently long life and passed away while doing something he loved. my dad is my favorite person in the world and it's going to kill me when he passes

It was a joke. Guy dying while playing a video game is a suitable tabloid headline. Too much stuff is blamed on video games.

Here in the neighbourhood a woman died sitting on the toilet.

It can happen on the weirdest times and places.

At least he was healthy and sharp until the end. (My granpa of 86y/o took 10 years to die). He has fully lived his life. May that be a bit of comfort for you.

Yeah, most people said that. Lots of old friends of the family said they'd love to die that way.

My sincerest condolences to you and your family. These are no doubt difficult times and I hope you have a great support group to turn to in such a time. While there's no way to make this less painful, hopefully you can take some solace knowing he was playing a game and likely happy during his final time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

A round eight-zero is a nice solid age. I'm sure he was happy to have still been able to share some good moments with you before passing -- he may have been playing Solitaire, but it sounds like he definitely wasn't alone. (And looking it up, apparently Solitaire is also commonly known as "Patience." :) ) Wishing many good remembrances to you and your family, ET3D.

If he died what he loved doing, playing games, then that's at least a nice way to go (if there is such a thing).
Sad to hear about this though, never easy losing any loved one. All the best.

He love that game in particular. It had about 400 card game variants. I occasionally tried to get him to play other games, for example Everyday Genius: SquareLogic, which he did play for a while and enjoyed, but he always went back to the card games.

My condolences. Your story made me think of this. It's short comedy skit. I hope that it gives you a smile and you don't think it's in poor taste.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I believe life is meaningful only because they end; As such there is only one thing I could say to you and him:
Hopefully he accomplished most, if not all, of what he wanted from life.

I don't believe that. Life has the meaning you put into it. I don't think my father 'accomplished' anything. Rather he enjoyed life and helped make the lives of those around him more enjoyable. He would have continued to enjoy life had he continued to live.

My actual father died a long time ago when I was much younger. My grandfather was maybe more like a father and he died a few years back aged 90.

He also loved to learn and share what he learned - although his interests were mostly gardening, fixing things and brewing beer. His funeral probably got such a big turn out because of the amount of neighbours he gave a pint of his ale when he felt they needed it.

I can only wish you strength at this difficult time - but I also know from experience that eventually you will be able to look back and smile at all the good times you clearly had and really appreciate the time you spent together.

My father liked astronomy, history and travelling. When he retired he started giving lectures (on a voluntary basis) about these subjects.
