Hi SG,

Santa has been running a little behind schedule, but the gift boxes have made another return to SteamGifts for 2020! There have been a few tweaks this year which are noted further below.

https://www.steamgifts.com/happy-holidays

How it works

  1. Creating a gift box and giveaway

    • To setup a giveaway, use the link above and click "Create a Holiday Giveaway".
    • The giveaway will start immediately and end on December 25.
    • The giveaway will be available to the entire community, although region and contributor level restrictions can still be configured.
    • The giveaway will appear as invite only on your profile and not be visible throughout the site.
    • Once created, you'll see your gift box in the link above and users will have a chance to open it to access the giveaway.
    • Please ensure your gift box design is appropriate for all ages and respectful of others in the community. Inappropriate designs will need to be removed along with the corresponding giveaway.
  2. Opening gift boxes

    • You can open 5 gift boxes each day until December 25.
    • When you open a gift box, you unlock the giveaway link and are able to enter the giveaway. Unlocked gift boxes are highlighted in green on the holiday page above, and you can freely revisit those gift boxes and giveaways.
    • You will see a notification if you cannot open a gift box. This could happen when the giveaway contained within is region restricted, when you do not meet the contributor level requirements, when you already own the game, when you have previously won the game, or when you have been blacklisted by the giveaway creator.
    • You cannot join a giveaway by only having the direct link. If you did not open the corresponding gift box, but received the link from someone else, you will see an error when attempting to view the giveaway.

Changes for 2020

  1. Peeking. Last year users could hide gift boxes for games they filtered on SteamGifts. This created a bit of an unfair advantage since users that decided to hide thousands of games on our site were now only left with the best gift boxes to unlock. This year filters are not applied and instead we introduced a new peeking feature to keep things more fair for everyone taking part in the event.
    How it works:
You can peek into 10 gift boxes each day. When you peek in a gift box, you'll see a random number of games (2-4) and one of them is contained within the gift box. You can then decide whether or not you want to open the gift box. This should stop trolling because if a user creates a box with the design for a highly desirable game, you can peek to see if it's actually one of the options. It should also help everyone to find boxes that better interest them, while still keeping a bit of mystery and excitement in the event.
  2. DLC and no CV games are not allowed in the event. Since Steam does not provide data regarding DLC it caused issues in the past where users would open a box to reveal DLC they already owned. No CV games (those marked with a double asterisk in the giveaway list) cannot be given away in the event. Users expressed their frustration with these games in previous events, so this year we're going to try excluding them.

No spoilers. Please do not share what games you found or what was contained inside of a gift box.

Happy holidays!

How does it work ? Is when giveaway ended we will receive game or by luck ?

They are like other giveaways on the site, but they end at the same time (and they are in special boxes, you can only open 5 a day). Winner is randomized, yes.

Are 1000+ people just stumbling upon the same random full value boxes or something? You'd think the whole secret giveaway thing would make winning a bit more likely but apparently not :S

If you look at a random boxes GA, prefered for a good/high priced game, then you will see a lot of entries from accounts that i clearly declare as multiaccounts.
They are so obvious not normal users that it is a shame.
Easiest example are fresh created sg accounts (can happen but not in that high ammount), steam level 6 (mhm), 25 games (sure...), nearly all from asia or from other countries but using at the profiles only asian languages^^ (i think at that point should each one say the "coincidences" are very high^^).
So, in short, really bad made multiaccounts that each blind one would spot. And they appear, much more, at the good/high priced GA's as at the small ones (that to "none known what's in a Box" -it counts only for the ones that use one account and that don't share the infos in groups, that they don't know it)

I am traced a good bunch back and sended the support the collected infos and to which countries, groups and so on it lead.
But i had only time for a really tiny look into 2 GA's -but that was more as i wanted to see to be honest-.

In the end a ""few"" peopel destroy the fun/a part of the fun for a lot of other ones.

hey we can hope its a honeypot trap - to see all those with multiple accounts :P
buuuuuut I doubt it
honestly though at this point I think I have bothered to open about 30 or 40 boxes so the chances of me finding those "good" boxes (subjective cause I like some of the games that others think are poop) are slim at best
still its all fun I guess :P

Don't get me wrong, the event is still a great thing :o)
... but the chances to win get massive decreased from all the multiaccounts and ("good") Giftboxes sharers.
But the lower chance don't frustrate me, it frustrate me that this multiaccounts are so extreme obvious and no thunderstorm of bans rush through them (i assume at the two Ga's i, partly, checked are 50% of the entries from multiaccounts).

And i think it should be give a automatic system against the ultra obvious multiaccounts (the decribed ones above -and i forgot that a good bunch of them use "Name123", "Name127", "Name198", not the same name but on top of the other "coincidences" it is one puzzle part more...-).
Why are steam level 6 accounts allowed ? I don't understand that to be honest.
You can reach that for absolutely free, without effort. Not to speak from all the events over the years that gave a lot more of XP's for free (so level 20 are for real users no problem). So should it be no problem to set a steam minimum level of 15 or 20 as example to close at least the worst/lowest alt accounts out (or let them pay a bit for trading cards = the lowest multiaccount users will not spend that money).

Doesn't Steamgifts require a $100 value account. Do these level 6's meet that or do I misremember?

You are right, that min. value exists BUT of course know that multiaccounters how they can abuse/exploit the cv system.
Mostly, they act from countries were it give very cheap games that, still, give full cv (on top).

So for real users that want to enter sg is it a fitting rule. One of my fem. friends joined sg after i gave her around 180 games for her account. Without exploiting, abusing, optimizing and so on, with the games i had lay around.

For the people that know how to cheat the system are only 5-10 games needed.
I am very sure that a few, lvl 1-3, accounts will loose the site access as soon as all add game tickets from me are handled.

Of course is that rule about it very difficult because it is nearly impossible to make it fitting for real people and prevent the abuse throught the black sheeps.
I don't have a better system that i would be able to present but i would be happy about each brainstorming or maybe solutions from other users.

If I want to be 101% positive and naive, then I'd just say that they are a LOT better at reading box-hints than I am. Weird to stumble on one of the big RPG hits of recent years, with the GA being created 20 hours ago and has 1600 entries. Quite crazy level of participation from the community... though don't want to get into chances and probability, I'm fairly sure that daily 10 peeks make people check a lot of boxes ( I think I checked and then didn't open 7-9 boxes daily, and had 2-3 blind picks - which means I checked 9-12 individual boxes a day, not negligible from the average daily number of boxes created... I don't think there are too many of them.

I'm fairly sure that daily 10 peeks make people check a lot of boxes

That's most certainly what it is. I've been able to easily pick and choose what I enter, and only enter to win games I'd like. Take into account the sheer number of users on the site, and a decent giveaway could easily accrue 1000+ entries in a short time. Other people seem to always see some sort of "wrong-doing" and point fingers at some great evil on Steamgifts when they don't win every giveaway they enter.

It's really a pity those people have nothing better to do.

Yeah, got a little rambly late at night with my comment, I felt I needed the edit about thinking the chances, despite I really wanted to avoid numbers. It's great if it was reasonable!

If we use that GA of cg as base with 8k entrants, and expect 100 new GA , and 12 average new boxes opened and/or peeked daily, we basically get 1k as the average visitor for a box ( 8000*(12/100). It's not as weird to have 30% more, especially if the box art makes it compelling.
I guess it just pops up in our mind as weird because when it's a big GA, but then people also want to enter for it - it was also a trend that new GAs had more entries because people don't really go back to old ones, even if they join late.

But that GA should have a bit more numbers than usual considering its circumstances... it makes sense why people would be drawn to it. Having 1000+ people clicking on this random box out of hundreds just feels a bit off for me, but I'm not sure how much I want to bring out the tinfoil hat and negativity here.

Depends on the design. If it sticks out (like, say, anime boxes which I generally see are more joined GAs than any other) its probably people being intrigued. If it's the blandest box imaginable, yet still lures everyone in... then it seems more suspicious.

If I had to take a guess it's either multi accounts or people simply sharing the 'better boxes' in private groups/chats that then everyone else joins

It's the same problem in the boxes, as they have on the GA page - they aren't properly identified I think. Like how you can enter for GOTY versions still after owning them, sorry :(

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You own all the parts of the game that are included in this app. But you don't own exactly the package for which giveaway was made for:

  • on Steam game has appID of 901399
  • when you go to your all-games tab you will not see this game listed there. Instead you will see: The Penal Zone, The Tomb of Sammun-Mak, They Stole Max's Brain!, Beyond the Alley of the Dolls, The City That Dares Not Sleep. Each has different appID, and when you click on the link to store page you will not be re-directed to the game you own. Instead you will be redirected to the page of individual episode. Like this

What SG does is take appIDs of the games or DLC returned by SteamAPI, and compare it to appID of the game you try to enter. In this case they are different, and SG treats them as different titles.

It's the same when it comes to GOTY versions like adam wrote - Witcher 3 has appID 292030, and Witcher 3 GOTY has 124923. When SG compares your library against giveaway it sees you don't have this particular appID (or in this case subID) and allows you to enter, even when you own the base game.

Steam is messy. If it would report you own all 5 episodes and that it makes you own the whole game - it would not be a problem. But it doesn't. I don't know if it's possible to compare content of subID with appID, and filter GAs based on this. But it would not solve your problem, as your game is treated as an app, and list of the apps activated is listed in the description.

Same reason why it's not possible to enter say Hitman 2 GAs when you own only first free episode - Steam reports you have appID of the base game, and for SG it means you own the whole game. It can't know if you have all the episodes or only 1st one though, because it's not reported, and episodes are treated as DLC (that are not visible on your all-games tab...).

In short: way how Steam organizes (or allow devs to organize their games...) is a mess, but it's fine from their perspective, as you can't buy thing you have 2nd time, or it can't be gifted to you through Steam 2nd time. So it just works >:D

I may be wrong in some details, but that's how it works in general.

So since this (super awesome) event is already running some time:

Did you guys find a personal gem or something that you can't wait to get your hands on? I try to always search for "Hades" clues but since it was not in a bundle yet, thats very unlikely to be included.
Other then that I got jebaited by the "peek" only once with "Quantum suicide".

So what did you found on your hunt? [Please keep in mind to not share hints or reveal presents; Its a fun event so don't ruin it for each other :) ]

I would love to giveaway Hades (bought it twice myself), and for me the problem isn't being bundled (they deserve full price from me), but that they aren't on other storefronts and steam region restrictions are very stupidly done. My hope is that they'll come to GOG or Humble Store (which isn't all that great for gifting nowadays either) or somewhere else eventually.

As for event - I more on a lookout for creative box designs, and so far there weren't that many as previous years. But there is still plenty time to go so I'm being hopeful and excited ^_^

And have a great holiday time, dear sir, and luck with catching that Hades giveaway! I saw a forum event with a few copies somewhere, so you might want to get on that!

I would but as cg said...

No spoilers. Please do not share what games you found or what was contained inside of a gift box.

So I'll just say that I am pleasantly surprised with the number of unbundled games I was able to find, and I have been compelled to enter GAs for two thirds of my reveals (20 out of 30) which I'm pretty sure is at a much higher rate than the 2 other official holiday events I have taken part of.

Welcome, new Steamgifts citizen!

As it is tradition around here, we not only warmly welcome our n00bs, but kindly point them to our FAQ and Guidelines, to help them avoid misunderstandings and common mistakes that could lead to unpleasant circumstances.

Good luck with the loot hunting in our boxes :D

What time does the event day start/end?

The Holiday Event main page on this last day doesn't specify, and only says "Choose a gift box below to open. Each box was created by a user in our community and unlocks a holiday giveaway. You can open 5 gift boxes each day until December 25, 2020."

EDIT: Now that I opened all my gifts for the day, it shows "Please wait 8 hours", so perhaps that's 00:00 UTC/GMT?

Yea, unfortunately I based my alarm off of the "time left" on the page. Still says I have 1hr left to open boxes. shrugs Off by one errors are pretty common in coding, but I figured it was worth raising the issue for next year if they plan on reusing the code.
