That's awesome! Glad to see you got your objectives met. A lot has changed in the last 4 months. I've been feeling a lot more bothered back then by the pandemic that my whole goals weren't sure towards the future. Now we are facing other problems, but never the less, that RTX still is my goal.

My old PC that I had until recently:

The thing held up quite nicely playing modern AAA titles at Med/High combo. Games such as BF5, Borderlands 3, Metro Exodus etc ran perfectly fine around 50-60FPS if you killed the shadow quality a bit.
But I had to leave it behind when I moved to a different country, decided I'll just update my entire PC once I came.
My planned upgrade was:

RAM: 2x16GB 3600 DDR4
GPU: TUF RTX3080 10GB
MOBO: TUF Z690
PSU: RMx 1000W 80+ GOLD

for around €3k total coupled with 2 1440p 144Hz monitors for €300 each
buuuuut
that GPU man, my options were either pay scalper prices OR pay still 2x MSRP from the store but wait for 3-6 months for it... might aswell just wait for 4000series and stick that in.
Unfortunately I sold my old PC and I needed a new one so I opted for a laptop, atleast when I get an actual PC I'll still be able to use the thing on vacations etc. so I dumped €1200 for a R7 5800H, RX6600M 8GB, 2x8GB 3200, spent €300 extra on a 970 PRO 2TB m.2 stick and honestly that should last me until the GPU situation normalizes.
Was thinking about a RTX3060 laptop but that card is generally slower than RX6600M and has 6GB GDDR6 vs AMDs 8GB with only benefit being the RT performance, not something I'd actively use on a 3060, that's atleast 3070 territory.
1080p screen since 1440p is a pointless power hog considering that 1080p on a 16 inch screen still has 140 PPI and I can run even Cyberpunk at ultra w/o RT at stable 60FPS.

most recent upgrade was the keyboard (the previous logitech g213 is now at work), but the case, psu, motherboard, cpu, cooler, ram, and ssd were all upgraded in the past few months. either the mouse or optical drive are the oldest. the next thing i'd upgrade would be the video card, but not before prices get sane again. i’d probably go 3060 assuming 3000 isn’t the latest generation anymore.

Sometimes, to feel good about my PC, I invest in periferals that make the overall look of my PC well. My Case didn't get that much love and that's because it's sitting down next to my legs, on the side. I dream that if ever I change my desk and location, I place it next to my monitor or to the side, somewhere and from there I may just as well put some money to get a pretty looking one so I can admire it's insides. 🤣

ha, can't argue with that considering i picked steelseries 3 times now! all 3 looked to be the best option for me according to my research, but it was nice getting to get both the keyboard and the headset into the same software. i doubt i'd replace my mouse with steelseries though, since i regularly use the frictionless scroll wheel and last i checked logitech was still the only one to offer that. crazily enough, logitech g213 keyboard and logitech g500s use different software even though they're both logitech g series. maybe i'll just put a steelseries logo sticker on the mouse i have so it all matches ;)
i have my case inside my desk and don't see much other than the front, so went with quiet over windowed. plus i like to game in the dark and other than functional lights like keyboard backlight i'm not interested anyway. it's a tanker desk with the drawers on one side removed so i can put the case in there, and a lot of modern atx cases are too tall for the opening. if the desk wasn't steel i probably would have cut an opening and added a case fan to the upper rear because it's mostly enclosed except for the front, but cutting steel is intimidating and i'm not sure i want to permanently alter the desk.

The brand doesn't matter if it give you the things you need. I got a Corsair Keyboard and a Razor mouse. I love them both identically. I did like back in the day Logitech, but I have had issues. Looks aren't always the best options, you gotta go with something that lasts a while, especially if you're using it a lot. I've never bought a Steelseries component. I doubt I won't like it. I do tend to pick stuff for performance and customization really and looks comes with a bonus. I'm kinda looking for a headset now for my gaming experience. Music and sound is SUPER important for me, so I will be curious to see what I find.

You and me both. My livingroom is most of the time dark. It's a lot more relaxing for my eyes. I don't enjoy that much not being able to see because the light from outside blinds me. Maybe that's why I game after sunset most of the time. My case is dark too, without any lights. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see it and probably customize it with some colors, but never rainbow lol. I'd probably pick a sky-blue as an overall theme, and maybe convert my whole my case and monitors to white to fit my logo and theme.
My desk is an foaldable table, that both me and my wife use to have our computers in mirror lol. I would love to get myself a new desk, but not today, not where I currently live.

I'm lazy, so I just bought pre-built and added a couple of large hard drives for more storage a few years ago (well, not exactly added, just plopped in my old high storage hard drives in order not to deal with transferring data - two birds with one stone.)
Headset is a generic cheap one although I do have a nicer one, and mouse is Logitech G502 HERO because I like larger heavier mice with enough programmable buttons which I use for work extensively. It was an upgrade from an older similar mouse which is not sold anymore. I chose this one because it has an almost identical form factor, and my saved profiles work with it. Again, lazy, but I like the mouse a lot so no complaints.
As for the upgrade, I don't know when or what I will be looking for by then. I tend to buy high spec and ride it until it either irreversibly dies or starts getting too outdated to run modern games at an acceptable enough framerate (lazy, do you see a trend?), and my standards for that are low. I don't mind a slightly laggy game. This one is trucking along very well so far, so I don't see myself upgrading in the near future.

I'd not say Lazy, but efficient. If your system is good, it doesn't matter. You may have paid a little extra because it was pre-built, but if you're happy with it, it doesn't matter. During 2020-2021 it was better to buy a pre-built system really. It contained the RTX graphics card so, it's a win than to actually go and fight your way for a GPU. I also see a pre-built a great idea if you plan to do an overall upgrade, and just buy everything newer and better.

Excellent mouse, if you're lucky to have it for many years. I loved it a lot to the point I bought 2x the same mouse. It broke down and I've decided to search for an similar alternative. Razor Basilisk V3 was the closest I got and I'm very happy with it. Just in case you want something similar, keep that in mind.

I guess even when it was new, that was still considered a budget build. I still play at 1080p, and sometimes even 720p, so I'm happy with it for another year or three.

I'm thinking of getting a new, smaller case. If I do, I would want to use my GTX 1650 (GDDR5). Am I going to experience noticeable losses, or was that 1060 overkill all along?

I'm aware of the differences in effective speed. I was just wondering if I personally would notice a huge difference given the budget CPU and the 720p/1080p gaming resolutions.
I realize sticking with the 1060 would most likely be the better option, but if I could get away with using the 1650 without much noticeable loss, that's probably the route I'd want to take. I guess I'm just not confident enough taking the step with the somewhat-limited knowledge & experience I have.

It depends on the games you want to play. As you don't seem to be the most demanding gamer you'll get along fine with a 1650 in low/medium settings in most games at 720p/1080p. Don't forget according to Steam hardware survey the graphics card used the most is Intel integrated graphics:)
Don't play Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition with RTX on and you're all set.

I have a GTX 1060 and I can still run a lot of the games on High or Ultra from the last 1-5 years. It's important that you have it as bottleneck instead the CPU/RAM as that was my issue and I've seen a significant improvement in quality and framerate.

That's definitely a hugely valid point. I know the 1060 should be the no-brainer, but truth be told I'm just not sure how I want to go about it, for a variety of reasons. I'm gonna make up my mind by the end of the day though (been mulling it over for weeks now), and purchase the required components.

Yes. For sure. I've left the most important and yet, most expensive component for last. I know my other components, the CPU, RAM, MOBO and so forth, can and will suffice for a while and as you, I'm doing just fine with my GTX 1060 so far. I've got a large backlog to clear anyway and that's giving me time for the upgrade, for stocks to clear up and prices to lower. Even if things now are A LOT better than it was 1-2 years ago.

It's not much, but it does the job well, even surprised me when it managed to run Gears 5 at 50 fps when upscaled to 4K in game. I do have some complaints about Lenovo though, their wi-fi card drivers didn't play well with it, so now I'm using HP ones, and the second complaint is that I can't turn off the integrated graphics, I can only lower it down to only use 512MB of RAM as its video memory.

That pretty much confirms insideAfireball's decision to go for a 1650 is viable. I'm pretty sure the poor thing you own runs on single channel. Consider adding another 8GB RAM for better performance.

Often times we think that we need the newest hardware to run some really pleasantly visual games, but it's not often the case. I think I've made that mistake often times because I choose to have smoother experience over graphics without actually upping the graphics a bit to see if I can run in a tolerable frame rate.
I can remember playing Assassin's Creed III once on 15-20 frames and getting rather further in the game.

I personally don't need the best computer, especially when I'm not upgrading for a while (new laptop entirely, gonna upgrsde RAM and storage at one point), like I've used my other laptop for around 6-7 years, a Pentium N3540 with 4GB of RAM till it became unbearable to wait 10 minutes for Windows 10 to start, not even including how long it took to log in to a usable environment. The machine has a special place in my heart though, a lot of good memories happened, including beating COD Black Ops 2 at 10 FPS and well... the ACPI issues that it has, aka it's just a PC in a laptop form factor because I can't unplug it from the wall without it freaking out.

Part of the reason why I never got a 4K monitor was because I'm honestly scared my GPU won't have a good time. It struggles more with my non-standard 1440p monitor as it is and probably I need to play at a slightly lower graphics for newer games because of that.

A 4K monitor isn't something you should consider, in my opinion, as a daily needed thing, unless you have something like a big studio, producing videos in 4K and HDR.

In general I notice an improvement but I credit that to the video card. I have noticed no negative issues so far (6 months, knock on wood). I run at higher graphics setting now but I don't do a lot of VR. Overall I would say that windows 11 has not been an issue.

I think it's a great idea. I normally am not bothered by fan noise. But I can sometimes hear my wives one quite loudly lol. I'd be more worried than bothered if I'd see that the temperature is off the top and the fans are on max speed. 😅

Some time ago most tech prices is too far to be affordable. But time change and for now (I cant say for everyone) that price is "barely" acceptable (for people I know) in brief: is good but still far from perfect (looking at West Europe)

It's definitely good to use alt computer for streaming. But need 2 input devices, 1 extra monitor(1+1 or 2+1 ~).
And I don't always steaming and don't have any game concoles this days, so I don't need to buy a Capture Card. Furthermore, one computer is more convenient for me.

If you want to play Roblox maybe, the GPU is quite weak for today's standards, being released in 2011 and the top Google result doesn't give me high hopes either, if you really wish to know what it is, it's HD6570 vs GT 710, and well the GT 710 is considered a display adaptor for basic graphics or more monitors, no gaming. The CPU has potential considering that the I7 2700K can stil hold up decently paired with a GTX 1650. If I were to upgrade it, a SSD would be the no. 1 priority, I just can't live without one now knowing how fast they are.

I've heard the word Geforce Now, my morning is crippled now. I used it on my old machine, I was met with a lot of issues, from connectivity which shouldn't happen as I can get up to 150 down and 100 up on wi-fi to the app crippling itself and refusing to open to the NVIDIA servers refusing my attempt to connect to their servers and support was about as useful as a Nigerian prince, got transferred from their English division to their Russian division, and keep in mind I can't speak Russian and in the end neither did they help.

What about Shadow Cloud that allows you to run a cloud PC fully to do whatever you want? Of course, it costs quite a lot in the long run, but if you just wanna use that, it's an interesting option.
Cloud Gaming isn't still at it's prime, but it's a great option if your PC isn't yet up to the task.

I've heard of Boosteroid. I wasn't aware of the fact they are Romanians. Interenet services are the best there and there's not so many restrictions as there are in the west when it comes to that. If I want to connect through VPN if I need to download a torrent or something, I'll always connect there as I've grew up and lived there for 28 years.
There's always alternatives if you want. I've used only the free version of GFN, but what bugged me was the fact that my monitor is 1440p and they didn't have a support for that until recently. But by the time it showed up, I've already made my upgrade on my CPU and RAM and that was enough to support my newest games to run a lot better at 60 FPS.

Did a speed test right now on ethernet and got 300/250 and I'm also probably being limited by my router since it's the OEM one. Sadly a lot of older folks still rely on stuff like ADSL (dial-up on steroids) or satalite internet.
Alternatives exist for everything. I've also only used the free version of GFN but I have a free 3 day trial to their highest plan somewhere in my email, but I have my current machine so I don't need it.

I've used UPS for the longest period of time. The most expensive, but they were pretty good. I remember paying about 35 RON (£15) and I've had a much stable and faster internet connection than in UK. I'm paying here £72 (417 RON) and it's not as fast as I'd hoped it to be.
Here I'm having about 490 Mbps for this amount of money. More than half of that amount I'd run at this speed with less money.

Yes. That's true. I've barely had any internet shortages to be honest. UPS was excellent with their stable connections back in the west, Timisoara, where I lived and RDS was more for people living in apartments.

Yes. I've had only phone and internet and never used the phone. Now, I've got the full package, but that's just because that's the package built upon or I'm a complete moron to go that high. I only want Internet. I get my entire entertainment (TV wise) from YouTube, Netflix and other streaming services anyway. Sadly, Virgin Media, is the most expensive brand there is right now and offers the highest speeds for Streamers/YouTubers like myself in the UK, but they charge almost double the price. I'm considering to either downgrade or change services as £72 is a ridiculous price if you compare it to Romanian standards, and UK too.

Bad customer support with not getting even close to reaching their subscriptions advertised network speed was common apperantly. Downgrading services is up to you as I'm not sure on what needs you have or don't have.

I'm sure they improved a lot. Romania, in my opinion, has the best internet connection and the security over the internet is not so much monitored which makes it great for many things. Totally. Fix Phones are a thing of the past. I don't even use the TV. I have a monitor, which I use as TV to play PlayStation games, watch Netflix and YouTube on. Owning a TV in UK means you have to pay £12/month or so for watching BBC and other national channels which I'd rather not watch and pay for.
I'll be looking for alternatives at some point as I think I can cut costs if I'm only using my internet out of the package.

Oh yeah, I know that internet stick. I've owned a PC, so my computer was mostly with an Ethernet cable, but my father owned a laptop and he found more use from that stick. It wasn't always a reliable stable internet thing, but made a difference.
When I got in this country, I got a SIM card that had unlimited internet and bought a broadcaster that basically acted like a USB stick, but offered wi-fi coverage and that's how I've juiced my first laptop, then when I've delivered my two computers, my computers. Did alright to browse on, but not spectacular on gaming.

Oh yes, they improved a lot, first half of 2019 they weren't here and then they became available in my area, which is impressive since you'd need to run a lot of cabling from one place to another for it to function decently. Internet security in Romania is non-existent, fire up that uTorrent client, go to your favorite choice of piracy websites and you're set for life. Being able to use the same sim from 1 country to another is a hit or miss with some providers if you want it natively and don't want to use something like roaming data.
Are you really forced to pay that £12 fee just to use your TV? That's quite ridiculous. Rather buy a smart monitor at that point (normal monitor with the smart stuff from TVs, like WebOS and Trizen). It kinda sucks when providers force you into these contracts with services you'll never use. I remember being stuck in a contract with Telekom (T-Mobile for outsiders), took hell to get out of it since we were paying for non functional services, never bothered to fix or maintain their aging infrastructure (ADSL!) so they went extinct in our area.
I remember earlier laptops coming with sim card slots which could support the blazing fast speeds of 3G, so those things would kinda be useless for laptops. Gaming on mobile data is quite a hit or miss since if you have the slightest bit of a 144p video playing in the background you'll have the ping equivalent of The Great Depression. I remember having to game with data in the time I didn't have a ISP in the first half of 2019, almost snapped my sim card in half because the speeds were so bad, dial-up had a chance to beat it, even called up Digi to see if they could do anything about it, they didn't and now I'm just getting spam calls related to marketing which I'm not interested in from them.

I don't think you'll have a problem really within a 2-5 window. If you're willing to not greed over looks, you'll be fine. I am running my GTX 1060 just fine with most recent games. Your video card is a lot better than what I have.

The RX580 is between 1.3 and 2 times faster than the 1050Ti, judging by a YouTube video.
Also I think games will start using more video RAM, so having 8GB is a plus.

The PC ive gotten was pre-built however i have upgraded a few parts here and there as the time went on

I currently use Manjaro which is from the Arch family. Mint is easy to get into if you're used to Windows. The only thing i can do on my old Manjaro laptop is play touhou games and browse the web i have spent plenty of time "Ricing" out the desktop as in customizing the looks and everything the best so far is xfce with "Chicago95" which gives a windows 95 vibe to it the other one that was pretty good is called "NsCDE" but i have ran into some issues using it often crashing it downright. Manjaro is pretty good so far but i once completely screwed it up by replacing some kernels that i had to do a clean reformat on my harddrive with a newer version of it.
So yeah Manjaro is good and what i currently use but i recommend Mint to beginners. Ubuntu has some bloat in it but should be fine.

Decided to go for upgrading GPU as I found a deal nearby for GTX 1070 card. 170 EUR.. seeing how some morons sell 1060 for over 200 EUR this seemed quit a nice deal. Also the dude was really cool and even gave warranty for a month if anything happens.
I was debating whether I'd have bottleneck as I have AMD FX 8320 CPU, but at least in well optimized games even GTX1070 with my old CPU performs brilliantly. There where some "simulators" where I saw maybe 5-10 fps increase and less FPS drops, but for example Dirt Rally 2.0 I got from medium settings at 30 fps to ultra settings with 70 fps. Some other games as well which I managed to try since upgrade also sees increase from medium at 30 to ultra at over 60 fps...
So at least the games I play really benefits from this card. I don't doubt I would have gotten similar if not same results with 1060 or even 1050ti, but at least this one Ill be able to move to my next build .. In which I will probably go for some Ryzen 5 and 16 GB ram. Also price - 1060 3G goes for up to 150, and 1050ti is going for 100+ eur ... I really didn't see the point in not going to 170 eur for this card.
Oh, and I upgraded from 750ti. So rather happy now.
