"Making trading cards available to all Steam users is a step towards an event we think everyone can be excited about..."

So much for that "big" hurdle of everyone not being in the beta and so surely it would not be fair.

Next Wednesday trading cards will probably be worth the same as a TF2 crate.

Comment has been collapsed.

Not likely. There will be some increase in supply (especially among the most commonly owned games like Half-life 2 and TF2) but there will also be a considerable increase in demand.

Hard to say how it will shake out.

TF2 cards, however, will likely plummet with all the idling accounts now generating TF2 cards/boosters.

True. I'm honestly surprised they've held onto their 35-40 cent value as long as they have but as you say, this should be the death knell for that value.

Boosters aren't tied to gameplay time or even the game you're playing though.

There's a better chance to get a booster if you have 100+ account that previously dropped you cards.

You need to buy ingame items to get cards in TF2 if you didn't buy the game, so idling there won't be any use

Quite a lot of people have premium accounts, whether from owning the Orange Box or from having made some small Mann Co Store item purchase long ago. There are thousands of copies of each TF2 game card on the market already.

Permalink

You still get the initial 5 drops for every account. (Idlers need premium accounts to be able to trade the items dropeed.) Plus you get a chance at booster packs on all of those accounts.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, that's what I'm talking. You get 5 drops IF you bought the game before it became free2play or you get 1 card drop for every 9$ of in-game purchases until you get 5 drops

Actually you can get more than 5 drops if you keep spending money in the Mann Co Store.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There are many people with hundreds of premium accounts for idling purpose, trying to gather items for profits. These accounts will automatically get 5 cars each while idling plus a chance at boosters. You get drops as long as your copy was premium before the trading cards started. As for the 9$ in-game purchases, I don'T think there's any limit to the number of cards you can get dropped from that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You don't need your account to be premium before to get cards. You need to buy anything on the store and you can get cards unlike in dota2.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Both TF2 and Dota 2 works the same way. Buying anything from the store will make your account premium. (Getting TF2 before it was F2P or now via the Orange Box will also give you premium) If the account was premium before the trading cards started, you were eligible for 4-5 cards drops. After that, you can get 1 drop per $9 spent in the in-game store.

It's clearly indicated in the FAQ

Free to play games drop game cards based on your in-game purchasing. For every $9 USD spent (approximate) since the start of the Steam Trading Card Beta, you will earn one card drop. This card will drop at some point as you play.

If you have made in-game purchases in Dota 2 or Team Fortress 2 prior to the Steam Trading Card Beta, or if you owned Team Fortress 2 prior to the Free to Play update, you will have 4 or 5 additional card drops available.

To get cards in TF2 it's enough to buy something from the store, doesn't matter you did this before or after the trading cards started. It works differently in dota 2 in which you can get cards only if you bought something from the store BEFORE the cards started. Of you made your account premium after, you must pay 9$ per card.

Permalink

Havent' had a chance to test it myself, but it goes against what Valve states in the fact. According to them, you had to buy from the store before the cards started for both games.

I might try it out with my GF account. Worst case scenario, I'll lose a little bit of money on an item. If what you say is right though, I'll get cards in return and it will reimburse any purchase I made.

Permalink

I tried this myself. My dota2 and tf2 was not premium when trading cards started. I bought cheapest items on the store for both games. In both games my inventory became bigger which mean both games became premium. Only in tf2 i got cards after this and no cards in dota2.

There will be an initial crash in prices, followed by a slow but steady recovery over the next few weeks. Common cards will probably stabilize at around .25 -.30 apiece in say... six weeks or so. I'm looking forward to it. I'll be able to craft all the badges I want and hoard some cards to sell off later and make my money back.

Sounds possible. Of course, this will be Valve showing officially they appreciate people throwing money at them more - might not be best PR move...

Do you really think anything Valve does will cost them PR? They have enough fan boys and rep that they could cancel Half Life 3 and people will say "Well, at least they're actually cancelling it and not leaving us hanging. And now they have more time to work on other stuff, too."

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, telling "ho, you sold your cards instead giving us money takes away your chance for free games" might be a big hit in PR.
Cancelling HL3 wouldn't be that bad because people have LARGE expectations, so they could say "sorry, but out internal research shows no matter what we do it's still DNF - instead we wrote ending, here grab a free e-book". And then modders would make it, people would love it, Valve would buy it and sell it...

I think even people which don´t like to collect cards and the other stuff missed something with the beta. Without any work I earned about 20€ for my steam wallet =) So I´ve got some cool new games for free and the new profile page isn´t that bad at all. If the stuff is getting really cheap after the beta, maybe I´ll buy things to make a badge or get me a new background...

For me it was a win/win situation, but haters gonna hate^^

Comment has been collapsed.

Did anyone say this after the beta started though?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes. Just a week or so ago there was a fake joke post about Valve supposedly saying they would give a special discount on one game per day based on Steam level. Lots of bitching and moaning ensued, with several people insisting that Valve would not reward people based on cards or Steam level. Some said never ever just because, and some said because the card system is still in beta and everyone doesn't have it.

Well, now everyone is going to have it, and it definitely looks like cards (and by virtue thereof, Steam levels) will have an impact on a meta-game during the summer sale. Yet to be seen what the rewards might be though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Even if it looks like there will be a meta-game with trading cards, the whole "discount based on Steam level" is a flawed idea tbh. It wouldn't be too hard to find one of the highest level people who's willing to trade with you for a little profit. Still much much cheaper than throwing a shitload of money into leveling up.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's debatable. I don't totally disagree with you, but I do wonder just how obliging an uber level individual would be. Plus, I think Valve may scrutinize volume discount buyers as it is. I would think they would have some mechanism in place (either a hard limit on bulk purchases, or flagging for review those that do bulk purchases) to combat the problem of the highest level people doing that kind of reselling.

On the other hand, I do entertain the possibility that Valve might even be glad for the higher level people to funnel discount games to other users. They might figure (well, we are getting extra sales, and many users will still not go through all of that trouble, plus we've done the most important thing, making loyal customers feel special).

I think it's that final goal, making the most brand loyal customers feel special and rewarded, that Steam wants.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most loyal? That's dumb too, I mean I'm not poor or anything but I don't want to waste all my game money on trading cards.. I think it's a really bad idea to put discounts based on levels.

i'm wondering how the card prices will react

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

they will decrease

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it will depend on the game.

Valve game cards have been steadfastly resisting price drops despite there being thousands of them on the market already. TF2 is obviously the worst offender and only recently has slipped to about $0.28 - $0.30. On the other hand Offspring Fling! has been at $0.20 or slightly under since its addition yesterday (a couple hundred cards of each type), and Guns of Icarus Online cards have been floating around $0.25 - $0.30 (with only 50-70 cards of each type on market).

My point is the market is weird sometimes and is a bit complicated to predict. Still, I imagine that the more common games will see immediate and perhaps lasting price declines on the market, while less common and/or more popular games will see smaller or perhaps no price decline with an eventual increase due to increased demand.

Mostly collectors' items. When you make a complete set it allows you to craft a badge to display on your profile and increse your Steam XP and level. Crafting a badge also gives you a custom background, an emoticon and a coupon for a ramdom game.

Indeed. I think even the Valve employees were a bit surprised how quick it rolled out. As they note in the post there are still some bugs they're working out in these last few days before roll-out, and they have not gotten to yet implement a couple features (Card Albums and Trade Offers) that they had planned.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It makes total sense to me that they'd want to roll it out before the summer sale. Even if it's only a different featured trading card game on major sale every day, the current popularity of trading cards leads to a huge boost in sales for a game, which means more money for Valve.

Have you seen prices are still rising. How did that happen ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I'd say more like they are fluctuating. In the past week they've gradually declined and in the last day or so they picked up a little bit. Still, overall they're down from last week this time. Some sets (L4D2 for instance) were at an all time low today. It's hard to say what the market will do, but I'm expecting some more decline before Wednesday because people are expecting there to be a market crash. It might just turn out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I think prices will spike up right before Wednesday so beta people can grab a profit before the booster packs come online then it will drop a bunch. That's wahat my old Econ 101 tells me. They tied booster packs to levellng up in community so I think people will want to level up.

I doubt they'll go that low because there will always be a certain level of interest in collecting things, especially if it means customizing your profile too. Even more importantly, if this event has any non-card related benefit to it, you can bet on people going after cards (assuming they're reasonably priced).

Different people will consider different prices reasonable, but I think many people will not think much of dropping a few dollars a week on cards, and I could see some cards getting as low as 10 or 20 cents each.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This event is the only reason I've got complete sets of cards for some of my games but I didn't crafted them into badges yet.
I bought cards on the market in advance before the Summer Sale at a relatively low price, because if there will be a Cards Event and the event has interesting rewards, the price of cards on the market will increase.
For the event I hope something along the lines "craft a badge to recieve a 50%~75% coupon for one of the games on your wishlist". Then it will be the moment to craft my cards into badges.

I would accept, but "something to do with Steam cards" is quite ambiguous!

I firmly believe that the levels will not play a part in the discounts. By that I mean, I don't expect to see deals that only "Level 10+" can purchase. I could see them being involved in a event similar to the Holiday Sale where you'd need level 10 in order to earn coal for example.

Yes, I also believe that the levels themselves will not play a part in it. But cards/badges earned giving you access to some kinda of meta-game with prizes(like coal) is what im thinking is going to happen.

+1. I think it'll either be something like craft a badge --> get prize, or they'll add special cards that can be crafted into a Summer Sale 2013 badge. I'm not saying any of these will happen, but it's more likely than level-based discounts.
