Have you watched the old War of the Worlds tv series? It's actually really good, as long as you don't expect it to be anything like the book. It's actually a bit of a sequel to the 1953 movie (which is great!), but it is set in the then present day (just at the tail end of the 80's). Oh, and only watch season 1, because season 2 is utter garbage. In season 2 it all took a far more cyberpunky tone, which was just odd considering the first season was nothing like it.
Season 2 did at least have a rather cool intro

OK, I know that it's already been mentioned in the thread, but WATCH THE WIRE!!!! Like really, disregard what everybody else has recommended, and watch it. Have you ever heard people calling Breaking Bad the best thing on TV since The Wire? Well, there's a reason for that.
