It does seem somewhat unethical. It reminds me of what some restaurants do where they post up a sign that tells people to rate their store five stars to be put in some sort of drawing. Of course people should vote for it if they think it is the best, though it does put other devs without the ability to give their product away for free at a disadvantage. Meh.

Do they even let games check who voted for them? What does "chosen" mean? Are only a small portion of people going to actually get the game free? How would you even confirm someone unless they used the same email address?

In this day and age, with so much competition for any spot in anything, new and emerging artists and creators have to make themselves known somehow, by offering something for free in return for a vote is there way of promotion, you vote, you talk about it, it gets noticed, you get the product for free, others see it,they want it, they try to get it, they maybe buy it. It's how self promotion works now. the industries be it music, art, literature, film and even gaming, are filled with what they themselves want you to buy, what they want to be the next big thing, don't believe for one second that the gaming industry does not have its part, it does. The money they make from the already popular games they churn out, is no different than the industries of the music and film world. We should support our home grown talents, our emerging artists, our budding enthusiasts like we support our local small corner shops or markets. One day the big fish come along and eat them all up, only to end up saying. "Hmmm where's all those people that made great little indie games gone"? We should support these guys in all they do, you never know, who the next big thing could be. I support you LazyGuys. Good luck and well done. (voted)

I agree with a comment you made earlier about how many of us in the gaming community were voting for our faves in many categories just so they could get a free game of mafia or civ5. It made no difference to them then and the outcome of the awards would have no doubt been flawed anyway due to the process involved. This is no different, i don't see how this has got so many people wound up into such a negative response. Sad, really sad that this is how people treat indie devs trying to make it. Who cares if it's like limbo, who cares if it's got a pixel man, (lol) who cares if it's on Desura or not? What matters is you're trying and that should be commended. Nothing these days is original anymore anyway, it's all been done before and every game is just a rehash over the last mesh with another texture, it just depends on who it appeals to. Keep it up mate :)

If you can't see the difference - Mafia/Civ site was buying attention, people entered voted whatever they found deserved a vote and got a game. This guy is BUYING VOTES meaning he buys people going on the site and voting for HIS GAME. And please don't tell me all that crap about poor indie devs needing votes considering that desura is full of actual good games made by other indie devs, ones who did real good job on their games and don't need to BUY votes. Suddenly you are treating this guy like he is the only indie on the contest, well he is not and buying votes is despicable and he deserves to have his game removed from the contest. Also trying is enough to show you are not a quitter but not to be set as top 100 indie dev (seriously go on desura and have a look what they have there and how many choices you have to support indie devs who spent their time and money to make GOOD games)

Buying votes? Did he pay you to vote? Hes asking you to vote and you are in with a chance of winning the game also for subscribing. How is this buying anything? And i've looked. This is where matter of opinion comes into play, because everyone is different despite how you may like to believe everyone's the same and likes all the same games as the next. I happen to like the game. So, to me it is a good game, i like this genre of game, hence the defense. :)

Every single nonsense "point" you make has been addressed, and refuted (with no room for "opinion" or rational counterpoint) in a comment chain off of UraniumFalconPunch's comment, 4th comment on the thread. Read my replies, and also those from Uroboros, thejadefalcon and UndyingZombie in that chain. Also, see my latest comment on the thread, page 2. You can't miss it.

It is VERY different. The other example was using an incentive to move people to vote, but made no attempt to sway what the people voted for. Even if somebody made 'junk votes' (disinterested random clicking), at least they would be somewhat random and would be dispersed across the contenders as a kind of 'white noise', with the increase in genuine votes smothering them by comparison.

In a contest where contenders are vying to come out on top based on their merits, you are honestly saying that influencing votes by offering material incentive is to be commended?
Do you really see nothing wrong with this?

Let's try this on a different subject. What if athletes offered incentives to judges for adding a +2 to the scores they were going to give? Or for knocking additional seconds off the recorded timer? Or for overlooking the use of certain banned substances? Should it still be commended?

This is done all the time, You are offered something for nothing just by voting for it, what is wrong in that? Actually what is wrong with it. Are you telling me you have never voted for something just because you were getting something for free? Honestly? lol And no it's nothing like your "other subject" (laughs aloud) People canvas for votes all the time, this is more like when you have an x factor contestant publicly asking for your support and to vote for them, all the others in the contest can do the same, if they wanted and they do. It's nothing like your other subjects (still laughing)

But the X-Factor contestant doesn't promise you a chance at a free blowjob off her if you vote for her and help her win.

The comparisons made by Uroboros are precise, and make perfect sense to anyone with half a brain. Also, whether he did or didn't ever vote for something to get something for free earlier in his life has 0%, absolutely nothing to do with the points he makes, which you seem incapable of comprehending, or are trying to childishly brush aside by diverting attention towards - for lack of a better word - bullcrap. Unrelated gibberish trying to attack his credibility (which you fail at miserably anyway) that has nothing to do with what's being discussed, because you don't have a leg to stand on in this discussion.

wow - Hands up all those that didn't vote on GMG golden joysticks just for the free game then?
I keep on lol at all the unreasonable negs that have no explanation but to slag off and call the guy names. If neither one of you are interested in it, then maybe you shouldn't resort to showing your vile sides. But then, it is a free world and you are free to show yourselves up i suppose lol

Want some reasons?

  1. There are better games in this competition
  2. He is buying votes as for "game is not good enough to win on its own"
  3. "Winners up to $1000, top 10 and editors choice up to $500 each" - now it is obvious he got hots for the monies he can get for places (and seems like he already is eligible for money prize)

Reasons for what? Why you don't like the game? the post? the motivation? It's pretty vague. Is he not entitled to self promote? This is not "buying votes" say like when you buy a new pc and the AMD card that comes with it has the offer of thief 4 and 2 other games for free, which were sold by the devs to the manufacturer, that is buying advertising, this is canvasing for a vote, with a possible chance of winning the game. Is this not how indie devs work? Self promotion and work with and rely on the public for promoting their games as they don't have the same funds available to them as the big companies? There may be better games, but that is a matter of opinion and everyone has their own, i just don't see why all the heat and nasty comments were needed. Seems like most were disappointed it wasn't what they thought it was.

Reasons for the hate in this topic. And technically "vote to get" = buying.
I understand that some people might like it but I refuse to believe it's second best game on the list, sorry (imho there are at least 5 titles deserving to win more than this).

So if this is canvassing for a vote, why isn't the game's giveaway separate from the voting process? You have to vote, to get a copy. As in - you cannot simply get a free "promotional copy" of the game. This is not a promotion. This is a way for them to win the awards by getting some guaranteed votes.

Hey, how interesting. You're using the same broken English as the OP, have a Steam account that was made on the 20th of September, have the OP in your friends list (and only 8 others), and have only bundle games, games from free promotions, or games that were so heavily discounted that the total cost of your account was below 20, maybe 25 bucks.

Isn't that curious? Hmm.

Comment has been collapsed.

The dev has in an earlier comment chain, which I just replied to, claimed this form of promotion is good for the IndieDB website, tried hiding behind false altruism and keeps dodging the question "if you get a decent position in the final ranking, will you be using this in your future press / promotion?", he keeps trying to twist it into "oh boo hoo it's so hard to be noticed, we're just being nice guys giving people a chance at a game for their support, blah fucking blah."

If you're so interested in promoting the IndieDB website / current running event; if all you want is some promotion for your game, and to get noticed, then why don't you just post about your game here, and notify people about the currently running voting thing? You're paying people to vote for you - and taking part in ruining the IndieDB awards system. Your OP isn't even more than literally one sentence, no effort taken to promote anything, neither your own game, nor the website. Not one sentence explaining the game or saying anything about it, just "hey vote for us and get free game, cool huh?"

And the fact that you're continually trying to twist it into something else is pathetic, skewed, and transparent as air.

Permalink

Also, apparently there's a cash prize for ranking in the awards. Please do not support this dev. There's a lot of other legit devs in the awards looking for some attention, with games they actually put effort in to, who aren't only interested in the prize.

I'm sorry, I didn't read your whole post but you still behave like you made lots of games and are the best game dev in the world. You clearly don't see that this is casual way of promoting games, asking people for their votes of support and if they want to they can sign up into form and have a chance to get a free key which is up to them so there'll be better to read the original topic again and understand English.

Good job yet again ignoring every single point I raise. You are paying people to vote for you, plain and simple. Me not being a games dev. has nothing, 0%, nada, zilch to do with the points I raise, so don't bother trying to attack my credibility like that.

Also, you have still not answered the question of if you get a good ranking, whether or not you will be using that fact in promotional material. And now you say "lolol sorry didn't read your post" to avoid answering what I asked - if all you want is some promotion for your game, and to get noticed, then why don't you just post about your game here, and notify people about the currently running voting thing, without any form of giveaway?

And here's two other questions I am sure you'll ignore: can people just get a free copy of the game, without having to vote? And what work have you done on the game since that early look in the older thread the other guy linked to?

Devs. (and I use the term loosely) like you deserve nothing from gamers, other than disrespect and disdain.

I'm sorry but with every higher post in the world it comes to two camps - like and hate. You're completely again just because of your theory or how you call it. When did we actually pay you to vote? Never. Did we tell you to vote? No. It's written clearly. Support and vote, which is normal and everyone does it and can do it and to be kind enough, we give you a chance to sign-up a form if you want the game for free but it's your option.

Oh, what do we have here? It sounds like to me that you are in fact blatantly telling everyone to vote. Not a 'please vote if you would like' or a 'I would appreciate it if you want to vote'. But basicially a 'Hey, vote for this game, and get a free key! Yay!'

Good God, just stop trying to defend yourself already.

The fact that you even admit to not read his entire post shows truly how little you are paying attention and understanding what is being directed towards you.

No where does that sound like he 'made lots of games and are the best game dev in the world' , perhaps more like you do not know the principles you need to have to be one, and do it right.

How can you not see the fact that coming onto a forum and in a few words, ask for others' votes, without even asking beforehand for them to take a look at the game and help by voting if you like it enough is very shady, totally unfair to those who deserve votes, and lowers your reputation as a developer?

'Understand English' I'm not even going to comment towards that one. Think about this, maybe if you used English a bit more structured in the OP, had a free demo download to offer for anyone to try, and then kindly ask for others to help vote, this thread would be much much more well received. You know, then maybe the votes you get would actually be genuine, from actual fans of your game.

Aside from that, you seem to have no problem reading and replying to any post that mentions you or your game positively. You're reading everything on this thread, and picking what to reply to, ignoring any valid questions raised by people. Pathetic.

You keep replying only to people who defend you, like that lonemonkey1980 guy, who is probably part of your "company", or a friend you paid off. Oh and, he's also now suspended for being an alt. account. Two accounts from the same IP. Now isn't that curious?
