99.9999% of comments are 'thank you', people need to be more creative.

Writing 'thank you' doesn't increase chance to win.

I even know greasemonkey script that automatically add 'thank' comment every time you hit enter to win button.

At least they aren't just a leecher that enter, never thanks and/or created a giveaway...
Don't complain please.

Actually mock gratitude is worse. Especially if one does it for personal gain, i.e. for increasing entries to comments ratio.

I don't need excuses. Unlike some other people, I'm not that insecure.

This is why AntoxaGray has this opinion, they have never gifted anything, just entered to win.

When you create a giveaway, and you have about 2500 people entered and only 75 thanks, this goes to show that majority of the people on here are in it for the free game, and not the whole point of the giveaway. When you only have 75 comments out of the 2500 entries, this makes you feel like you are being used, this is why there are alot more Contributor only giveaways.

Yes commenting thanks, or something similar, does not increase your chances of winning, but at least goes to show the contributor that you are thankful for the opportunity to win the game, cause they are (majority of the time), giving their game away for free.

Try gifting something, and then see if you have the same opinion, and be grateful that you generally had the chance to win something.

Once you gift something, it's almost a love-hate relationship with the comments that only say, "Thank you." Yeah, it's nice to see some thanks given and a bit irksome when there's hundreds of entries with nearly no thanks, but you also see how empty those thanks are from those that do leave it that seem so empty that they almost certainly must be from a script, which really makes it meaningless. If done by a script, it's absolutely empty. The person couldn't even say thanks themselves, they had a program do it for them. One defense could be that it saves times. Well, maybe one shouldn't be entering one million giveaways per day (obviously an exaggeration) and take the time to write a meaningful comment coupled with their thanks. Just my stance. I'd rather people be honest about it and really give me a thought out comment. Otherwise, it just feels like an obligatory "thanks" so that you don't look like an asshole (the general consensus on these forums regarding those who only enter and don't say thanks).

You might as well ask why are people giving games here when they are gaining nothing from it? Basically were just losing money here

why this kind of questions usually ask those that don't contribute to this community in any way?

Because I want too? (its like asking why do people need to ask, "Why do people write 'thank you' in every giveaway"?)

I thank the person not in some misguided attempt to increase my chances to win but to, you know, thank them for offering up a game in a giveaway that I'm entering. They didn't have to create a giveaway, so I am thanking them for doing so. If I can think of something special enough to put instead of a thank you, I do, but I'm not that imaginative when it comes to thanking people.

and its people like yourself that deserve to win the giveaways, because you take the morality and at least show some respect to the contributors by saying thank you.

That is how I feel too, but generics just seem to be more of an insult to the creator than saying nothing (Generics, in my opinion, are no better than Yes-Men/Sycophants [people who suck up/afraid of their boss to the point they just confirm everything the boss says and say it is brilliant move even if it will ruin the company] aka pointless people who make you feel good but are not useful). I like it when creators have something in their description, makes it so much easier to not be generic! I will do generics (with variety) though, just I do it out of guilt and feel bad about it. I would rather the thanks be more thoughtful and meaningful... I don't think I am explaining myself very well

At the end of the day, it's just taking 2 seconds of your time to push some buttons. Personally I put the gift creator's name with my thanks to show that I actually know who's giving it away. Typing something that no one will read is better than not typing anything at all. At least then you can say that you did it :)

I find it annoying when I do a giveaway to have to filter thought the generics to find actual comments. So I guess it depends on the creator.

There's a script that hides generic comments like "Thanks", "thx", "<3" and such.

Guilt mostly, I prefer to do a personal thank you if I win rather than a generic, but I do generics too (if I am not feeling creative/Gifter doesn't have anything in their comments I can comment on)

People say thank you because they have manners, you give them an opportunity to win free games. I don't see the need to question it really. Would you rather people throw slurs at you?

What's so wrong about it? I mean, yeah, it's better to write something creative but it's better to write at least "Thank you" than write nothing. Reality is that when I make a giveaway the amount of comments is only about 10-20% of the entries in the giveaway. As a giveaway maker, I prefer to see at least a shitload of "Thanks" than nothing so we could go from that and then try to write more creative comments...when we're writing them at all ;)

Why do people make new threads covering topics that have been done to death?

If they really wanted to know the answer, wouldn't they try searching first?

Making new threads doesn't increase chance to win.

I even know greasemonkey script that automatically start new crappy thread every time you exhale.

I'm working on an upgrade to the add-on, which hides the "search" box so that you can create veritable tsunamis of crap duplicate threads without any nagging attacks of conscience.

Will let you know once I'm done:

I say thank you because I am thankful to those who created the giveaways I entered. Even when I don't win, I am still thankful for the chance. When I do win, I thank them several more times also. I'm just a polite person (mostly), I can't help it.

Someone is giving away games for free. Why it is strange to thank him?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Also, why is it strange to berate those who DO thank giveaway creators?

I understand people might not want to say thanks to gifters, for whatever reason, but in my mind there is something wrong with those who get a bee in their bonnet about others doing it.

If the user had a track record of creative, innovative expressions of gratitude, his post might carry a bit more weight, but his profile suggests this is not the case. I don't see making no comment whatsoever as any more creative or polite than a simple "thank you"...

On top of everything other people have said already, it says in the FAQ that it is proper etiquette on this site to thank the submitters although it is not required. Not saying that's strictly why people do it (pretty sure some people who spam thanks have never read FAQ) but it's there in the guidelines.
