Because some people want a "nice comment/entry ratio" for private giveaways and groups.

If i comment, i write more as "thx".

In the "Base Rules" and "Site Etiquette" sections of the FAQ, it says this:

• Try to be active in the forum/chat.
• Always thank submitters. Thanking is not required to enter a giveaway.

So I guess people started thanking people based on the suggestion, and once others saw it became a thing you do. It seems generic now, especially with scripts, but I think its nice that people take the time to say thanks, even if it only takes a second. What bugs me a little is when people say thanks when the creator of the giveaway writes asking for something different. In that case c'mon, please take a minute to write a comment other than "thanks".

I actually read that some steam groups related to steam gifts make you comment on each giveaway you enter.

I don't know. Why would you thank someone for not winning anything? I save my thanks for if I win.

The only logical reason is to gain more comments.

Sometimes I say the generic thank you, but other times I change it up and say Thanks!!...you read that right. Two, count'em, two exclamation marks. I like to live dangerously.
