If you are into shonen shows or just comedy shows, both are very good. One Piece has very nice fights and Gintama has very nice comedy/parody and sometimes drama.

Well spirited away was my introduction into the anime world when it showed one time on cartoon network I think. Still I think my favorite anime is Fullmetal Alchemist

Sword Art Online is really good, not sure it's my favorite, but it's the most recent one I've seen and actually liked. Favorite of all time though I think would be Digimon (especially S1 and S2), I just love the world and the whole idea behind it.
Also anything by Miyazaki is wonderful. Gundam Wing, Robotech, Star Blazers, Sailor Moon, Keroro Gunso, Yu Yu Hakusho, I could list dozens of anime I love, picking an absolutely favorite is hard, but Digimon I think gets by with the victory. I like a lot of anime though :P

Your favorite ending is from School Days? :O, gah the pain from watching it hasn't gone away :(
My personal favorite is Higurashi as a series, and probably Perfect Blue as a movie. I really really enjoyed Kara no Kyoukai and Welcome to the NHK though, so they're pretty far up there. Also Serial Experiments Lain, Paranoia Agent and Steins;Gate, and I think I'll stop there before I can't lol.

Im not quite sure what my favorite is. There are several that I have enjoyed over the years. Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh, Chobits, Hellsing Ultimate, Haruhi Suzumiya, Yuru Yuri, Shuffle!, Ouran High School Host Club, High School of the Dead, Trigun and a few others.

Ultimate goes beyond the series by quite a bit. The first couple retell some of the events in the series and then there is just so much more to it. MDuh is right though, there is a lot more bloody action, but that didn't bother me much. I don't know how it compares to the manga, I didn't read it.

I usually don't watch anime cause I find most of them boring and nothing special(already seen thing) but there are a few that i liked.
Maybe the one I like the most is Kaiji, it's something a little different than the usual anime, I like it's storyline, the drawing style and the way they make it feel the anime to you in general.
Another that I liked is One Outs.

I can't give a single favorite. I'll have to give a top 5 with reasoning:
Sailor Moon series (jap unc fansub) - Sailor Moon cannot truly be experienced in licensed translations. So much nuance, innuendo, and some times entire scenes and episodes are lost to censors. The "kissing cousins", the tensions surrounding Chibiusa and Michiru, the entirety of the Stars saga, the Ami special... the list goes on. Story depth slowly evolves from the beginning "morals for little girls" style into a legitimate series that, while outwardly casual, is hardcore if you analyze it. Can be appreciated by all groups if they can get past the fact that they're watching Sailor Moon.
Outlaw Star (any version) - One could say Outlaw Star is what happens when Cowboy Bebop stops taking itself so seriously. Surprisingly, the licensed translation loses very little, and is one of the few english translations that actually had good voice acting. Moderately deep story, well paced narration across the series, with just enough nuance to keep an analytical mind entertained. Definitely casual, but on the cusp of hardcore. A great transitional.
Battle Programmer Shirase (jap unc fansub) - Sadly never officially licensed for distribution outside of Japan. Quick, humorous storytelling, off the wall plot, but very deeply mature themes. I mean come on: lolicon hacker gets paired with adorable little girls when doing jobs, and it's NOT hentai but wants to be (scene when one girl starts goading the antihero's complex; the dialogue wouldn't exist in translated versions). A translation of this would have its dialogue destroyed similar to how all of Ranma 1/2 would be if aired in most territories. Absolutely casual, but you have to be otaku to actually look for it. On an interesting note, the last episode actually thanks its viewers, specifically thanking viewers of fansubbed versions, and apologizes for the rushed ending. A continuation was hoped for, but never materialized.
Angelic Layer (any version) - Little girls battling each other with semi-sentient, home grown robots. Attachment, love, loss, emotion... Card Captor Sakura without a whiny mascot. Undeniably casual, undeniably adorable.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and S.A.C. 2nd GIG (any version) - I like to compare GitS:SAC to the old cop show Dragnet but with a decidedly cyberpunk veneer. English voice acting is one of the best matches and localization lost almost nothing (to the point that some episodes aired had to be prefaced with a content warning screen). Deep, detailed story, heavy individual characterization, well-built world, and touches on themes many dare not go near. Hardcore.

There was more than one version of Angelic Layer? wow I've been out of the anime scene for a long time...

Hunter X Hunter 2011 is pretty much the best show that's still ongoing. Favorite is probably Dragonball series, which got me into anime in the first place. DBZ hasn't aged particularly well, but there is a reboot (Dragonball Kai) for those who haven't watched it.

Talking to gloves about school days got me interested in a discussion about anime. While normally I just use /a/ for anime discussions I feel they have degraded a lot recently and there are no good threads there anymore. Now on topic, I think I will have to put mine into different categories I have watched a lot of anime and there is so much to enjoy.
My favorite ending of all time for a anime has to go to, School Days (I won't answer why just watch it)
My favorite anime is really hard, it would be a toss out between Elfen Lied, Eden of the East, Madoka, and Clannad After Story
The first poster remind me of movies so I will do one for that to, it would be Spirited Away.
I was gonna originally do one for each genre, I will save that for another time as it takes a lot of effort considering there is at least 10~ genres. Depending on how specific I get.
