In your opinion, what's the best game removed from Steam? Why?

Feel free to mention more than 1 game, comment why Steam removed it/them and/or tell how to legally get it/them nowadays (maybe the most important info).

It's certainly not the best one, since I don't know most of the games removed by Steam, but in my opinion one of the good ones was Planescape: Torment. I remember people compared it to Fallout 2 because of the various possibilities of both RPGs. Actually it can be purchased on GOG.

Edit: Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition is on Steam!

I'm from germany and I can't buy the first game, so although it's not really removed from steam, I still think I could mention it, due to regional restrictions.

Think I have a key for that.

It's not available on the DE store?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Currently not. But imho it was available earlier. On the other hand, it was bundled many times and given away that it shouldn't be an issue getting it.

Comment has been collapsed.

No, it's not available, just like Myrsan said.
For a relatively short amount of time, you could purchase it, it even has a full german localization and it is not illegal or anything, but since it never got an USK rating (same as ESRB, I guess? ^^"), it got removed.

Thousands of Steam games have no USK rating.

They removed a ton of Russian fake review games too, like the lovely Little Alligator.

So instead of security through obscurity, you have cleaned up your friends list so much that it's now easy for the Stalkers That Be to assemble a relationship network of your entire family's Steam accounts!

Activision like to randomly remove games, it has nothing to do with the content.
One of the games where I very much regret not buying it on Steam when it was available. Great FPS.

''Activision like to randomly remove games, it has nothing to do with the content.'' Indeed it has to do with licenses.

That was not the expected response!

The reason why I recommended Two Worlds was because the series has a reputation for being a bit crap. I actually like the PC versions, and most of the issues with it seem to be on console (I've not played the console versions), and I expected you to shoot down my idea about Two Worlds because of the reputation that the series has, and then I would be able to say something like "well, it's still better than Fable 3".

Well, I thought Two Worlds 2 was a perfectly fine game. A bit rough around the edges, sure, but still an enjoyable experience. Two Worlds 1 was originally made for PC, and the port to consoles was really bad. They did not re-size the fonts, making it hard to read, it was poorly optimized, buggy, and not a fun experience, according to the reviews. PC version was not bad though.

Fable 3 has a lot of issues though. But let's start with the good parts:
I thought it had a very pleasing art style, and the voice acting was also quite good. It had personality, both from how it looked and how it sounded.

Sadly that's were the good ends.
Combat is really just "hammer the left mouse button". There's no skill involved, just keep clicking and you'll win. That got old really really fast.
It has probably the conceptually worst menus I've seen in a game thus far, once you're in the game. Instead of doing the normal thing, and having a list, you teleport to a specific room, where you walk around and make your menu choices. This is really slow, and it means that there are plenty of loading screens. You enter a loading screen when you go into the menu, and when you exit it. This slows down the game a lot.
Like many other games of the era, instead of giving you good descriptions of where to go, the game gives you a "glowing path" that you should follow to reach your next quest objective. A bit boring, but the main issue is that the thing often does not work properly, and will literally point you in the wrong direction.
Talking with NPCs is utterly inane. There are only so many times you can fart in someone's face to make them like you before it gets repetitive (yes, you fart in people's faces to make them like you. It's not the only thing you can do to make them like you, but it's all really shallow and boring).
The game has a rather odd view on morality. Raising taxes for a year in order to save the world is super evil. Not raising taxes and letting the world die because you can't fund your army, well that makes you the good guy.

At best I would consider Fable 3 a 4/10. It's not a completely broken game, and it has strenghts, but the bad out-weights the good. It's shallow, really shallow, and just dull.

The $20 "deal" (deal but no deal) was quite popular recently.

Fable 2 and 3 each have some weird coop modes, too, though I'm unsure if the Fable 2 one made it to PC.

Also have a tradeable copy in my inventory ... maybe if I hold on to it long enough it might get as valuable as Mafia 1 ^^

Was it not due to GFWL not working properly?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not directly. Microsoft discontinued support for all the GFWL titles they published. In this case even whilst it was still being sold on Steam they were no longer providing activation keys.

Alice - Madness Returns was a similar issue. People were reporting issues activating the game, and then it was pulled.

Oh yes, I remember, they started issuing used keys, then they replaced those with more used keys and people got upset about the whole situation.

Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. It also comes with a remaster of Escape from Butcher's Bay. I finished playing that just few days ago, both are great games.

Mafia 1, of course. Great game and this time it's not just my patriotism speaking.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game - this one was actually removed for the second time, last time it returned after a year or so? Really fun.

i tried to play slaughtering grounds. the frame rate would drop from 60+ down to 10-15 within the 15 minutes each round takes. after loading the next level it was 60fps again for a minute or so and started to drop again then. aside from that, game design was horrible, graphics ugly, AI non-existent, gameplay forgettable... it was really, really bad. it hurt my soul. i should have gone to therapy after that. never touched a DH game ever again. ^^

Broken Sword 1. It's been replaced by the "remastered" version and even if you owned it, it was replaced in your library. And the remastered version ruins the original in many ways.

Get it on GOG instead.

The original versions of 1 and 2 were re-added on Steam on Friday as free DLC for the remastered versions. GOG may have been ahead of the game here but initially they also only sold the remasters.
