It came off as being one of the most confusing and crazy anime i have ever seen over the past 16 years of my anime watching life, I think I had to re-watch it about 4 times to really understand the movie.

FLCL otherwise known as FuriCuri (perhaps spelled differently though). I dare you to try and make sense of this one.
And then there's Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann which is actually quite sane but the art is totally crazy considering Gainax is behind it. Good show if you like mechs and bravado.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Another Gainax show. I mean the original concluding with the Human Instrumentality Project. This time it starts out like a cool mech show but then you're trapped in the mind of the depressed suicidal creator of the show and sanity goes out the window in favour of emo mixed with christian symbolism.
In general things by Gainax or Studio Bones end up pretty crazy. Or on the less action more just cerebral but just as crazy side there's Studio Ghibli movies.
