or... a gun?

Guns are fun and, with proper supervision, perfectly safe for children. I have very fond memories of skeet shooting with my father, and it was something that brought the two of us closer together. It pisses me off when people universally denounce what is, for some, a cherished activity, as being "stupid", or worse, try to outlaw it for other people because they personally don't like it.

Then again, when I started playing M-rated games (at 13, mind you) my father also had a long talk with me about fantasy and reality and why it's okay to see something in a movie or a game and not okay to do it in real life. He's also one of the only non-gamer parents I've ever seen who actually reads the ESRB labels on the back of the box and would ask (or Google) what a game is about and what's in it.

There are many examples of bad parenting evident here; owning a gun is not by itself one of them.

of course - that goes for everything. do you think i'm suggesting guns pick themselves up and kill people? they're dangerous because of their potential, and because a huge number of parents are terrible.

aside from that, i would never either risk the safety of my family for "fun" or associate a tool for killing (literally the purpose of a gun) with fun for my kids. one of the reasons america is so damn fat is because parents seem to think it's ok to associate fast food with fun in america (for example by taking their kids to a fast food joint as a reward). the reason animal cruelty on a farm is acceptable to some farmers is because they've associated it with profit in their minds. the reason commercials work is because they associate buying a product with "good times". just because you feel a certain way doesn't make it right. just because you had fun with guns as a child doesn't mean you couldn't easily have had more fun playing without murder weapons. it simply means your laws are fucked up (both directly, and those concerning advertising) and people in your country have been brainwashed into associating killing tools with "safety" and "enjoyment", where the numbers show a different story.

homicide rates worldwide have been decreasing but america's homicide rates decrease at a slower rate than countries without guns. and just in terms of the number of people killed, america lags way behind even less developed nations. not to mention you simply can't carry out a school massacre as effectively using kitchen knives. there are plenty of very strange arguments in favour of guns (none of which stand up to simple statistics), but i have to say your defense that guns are "fun" is probably the worst defense i've ever heard for anything, let alone a tool capable of killing people with barely any effort. logic and stats say guns suck (yes, largely because people suck)... that's the end of the story i'm afraid.

p.s. i'm not saying your parents suck - obviously you come from a different culture to mine, and guns are more acceptable there than it is over here. i'm merely complaining about the fact that guns are more acceptable there.

The numbers show a different story, do they? I disagree. Anywhere from hundreds of thousands to several million people (depending on who you ask and in what year) have defended their lives using guns - and these numbers are generally regarded as underreported. In the majority of cases involving a defensive gun use, no shots are fired, and in many cases no report is made, so reliable numbers are generally lower than reality.

As I said before, comparing the entire United States' homicide rate is just plain wrong - for two reasons. First reason is, the United States is not a homogenous legal environment. The gun laws in Florida or Georgia are utterly and remarkably different from the gun laws in New York or California.

Secondly, It's unfair to mix, say, south central LA with rural North Carolina where I went to college. Those areas are further apart than most European countries. In LA, they have some of the country's most restrictive gun laws. In rural North Carolina, gun culture is so prevalent, gun ownership was freely discussed in my classrooms and it was utterly routine to invite friends to go target shooting, hunting, or plinking. Guess which area has more crime? Hint: It's not the area where everyone carries a shotgun in their truck!

The truth is, gun ownership and crime do not have a clear correlation among the 50 states. Even brushing aside your "correlation equals causation" fallacy, your argument is still simply not supported by the actual facts. Here's another fact: Crime in the United States HAS been falling, despite the fact that the gun industry has seen several record years for private sales. Now watch as you suddenly pick up the "correlation does not equal causation" banner!

If you really want to combat gun crime, end the drug war. The overwhelming majority of gun violence involves gangland shootings and drugs. Beyond that, we should fight poverty and our horrible education system, not disarm peaceful, law-abiding citizens who have done nothing wrong

As for "fun", I was never at risk either. To be honest? I face more risk DRIVING to a firing range than I do SHOOTING at a firing range. With a few basic safety rules and, for new shooters (of ANY age) proper training and supervision, shooting guns is a perfectly safe hobby. So I don't see why you call shooting to be a "risk to the safety of [your] family."

The logic in this article is just infallible. It's like news still doesn't understand that it is never one thing that causes this. It is a culmination of factors.

They bought their 13 year old boy a gun, I am baffled why on earth would you do that?

Some people like to hunt and teach their children about guns. Age does not dictate wisdom, though if you know your child has mental problems, its probably best to keep a weapon away from them unless closely supervised.

I played Postal 2 at age of 14 - 15 but you don´t see me doing the same thing. People sometimes are damaged in the psyche and if it is not given the propper attention at time this shit happens. Stop blaming video games.

I agree, it wasn't the video game that actually caused him to snap. It was being punished for having bad grades and then getting his favorite thing he wanted to do taken away. The video game he was playing was violent, but that wasn't the reason he did what he did. Pretty logical.

Rape is sick & wrong...Why would it cross the boys mind? He's only a child. I had guns when young, but never lashed out when I was grounded from my games or such. Something new everyday it seems. Only in America I think :/

What's with all the typos on that page?

I understand the killing on some level(I do not condone it all at, I am just saying I am understanding he went fucking berserk so it makes sense that someone could do that.)

But what the fuck was with the rape thing? I don't understand that at all... especially since it was his mom.

"'Dad this is Noah. I killed Mom accidentally, I egret it. Come home now please.'
Such a weird sentence. Can understand why the dad thought he was joking.

Everything about it is weird because the guy was clearly unstable. I dont understand why he went beserk, but apparently it's a condition. As for the rape, I suppose he was at an age where children become sexually curious.

Still it was his mom. Which is why I don't think sexually curious.

Honestly. I think the rape really may have been from COD/shooter games seeing as it;s one of the things those kids are constantly screaming in the game.

All the other kids having sex with his mom made him jealous, so he wanted to have sex with his mom too?

maybe it was just a way to "dominate" his mum and showing her, that she can't control him and he is in control. We can assume a lot,we won't know shit about this boy and his motives and his background that led to them.

I always hate seeing shit like this happen. Not only because a lot of folks are going through hell because of one person's choice, but also because of the stigma this puts on gamers with mental disorders. Too many people assume that playing violent games and having a mental illness automatically makes you a dangerous person. I know of some folks who would probably burn me alive if they knew what I've done in Postal 2. -_-'

The thing that is going to piss me off is that medias are going to use this as a "video games are dangerous" warning.
But this kid didn't kill someone simply because of a game, it's because he has some serious anger issue.

this was over a year ago. is some new legislation being voted on or something?

it mentions videogames and guns several times(by which I mean things like "William Crooks' Facebook page shows his interest in the US Concealed Carry association as well as the Springfield Armory, a company that sells pistols and rifles." (irrelevant info. which is bad reporting 101)) so it could be either or both of those.

I'll assume they're about to attack games again.
Or maybe its about meth?

Personally I'm bracing for some sort of stigma on those with some form of add like me.

I`snt he to jung to be playing COD? I blame American parenting not video games. USA has rating system for games and COD is not for 13 year old kids if I am not mistaken. So the parents got their 13 year old "kid" a gun and an addictive game meant for adults, only ones who must be in jail are the parents, not the kid. He should go to some sorts psychology treatment to counter effects made by his brainless parents.

I'm British. At 10 years old I played GTA SA.
It isn't only US parents that let their kids play violent video games. Also, at 14 my friend owned an air rifle and he and I used to go out into the woods and shoot trees.
Either of us are yet to have any thoughts about killing someone.
Neither video games or guns cause violence.

Parenting!!! Spoiling your little kid so he becomes unmanageable little brat and when u start to take something away from them they scream and become aggressive that was my point. In my country we dont give guns to kids and even handful of adults have them we dont shoot up schools and dont shoot each other or our selves. I dont have need for gun never had and hope never will be. Guns don`t kill people, stupid people with guns kill people. Different people have different stage of maturing part of it comes from parenting other part is genetics. I play violent games all may life and i especially enjoy the bloody ones but i never had a urge to rape, kill or do harm to others in real life.
