there are two types of replies to topics like these:

A: Generalizing about guns/gun owners/gun ownership

B: Complaining how it's wrong to generalize about gaming/violent games/people playing said games

You know that fleeting thought of "Oh, they're going to blame video games for this" every time something violent happens that has a real or alleged link to video games? That's how us gun owners feel, too.

You ever tried to kill someone with a video game? Doesn't work out so well. Guns are far more dangerous than video games.

You never killed someone with a video game? means you didn't try hard enough.

My guns and my video games have killed an equal number of people.

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people." I know it's a cliche saying, but in my opinion, it gets a lot of bad rap for that. I think people fundamentally misunderstand it. It's not a rhetorical technique, it's a moral statement.

No gun owner seriously thinks that their gun is not a dangerous weapon - that's why we have safety rules for handling them and most gun owners will likely get quite mad at you for violating them. However, read that again. We have safety rules for handling firearms. We have safety rules on how to properly store firearms to prevent them from being handled inappropriately or by people not competent or allowed to handle them (such as children or thieves). Why the emphasis on preventing their improper handling? Again, people are dangerous, guns are just inanimate objects.

When a dangerous or deadly incident happens with a gun, I believe the moral actor is solely to blame for this. By saying that the presence of a gun - or a video game - is partly to blame takes part of the blame off the shoulders of the person responsible, which I think is reprehensible. Call of Duty doesn't cause incidents like these, and neither do firearms. Blaming guns is wrong for the exact reason that blaming video games is wrong.

Let's ban them from making another Call of Duty!

Unless of course they actually make a radical improvement and the game needs to be released for the good of the gaming humanity.

Which will probably never happen.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, is interested in playing Call of Responsibility.

His mom taught him to do this through hands-off parenting.

Well... his life is over.

I'll be honest (and I can't believe I'm saying this)... whether it's video games, movies, television... I do feel like they have an impact. Kids probably SHOULDN'T be cooped up in their rooms playing Call of Duty for hours every day after school. Being a kid is time to socialize, hang out with friends, join clubs at school or play sports. Embrace a more creative hobby. All of those things will teach you how to be more productive as a teenager, as a young adult and as an adult. That's not to say video games are to blame, but I have no doubt in my mind that they can be a tipping point for someone who is already unstable. Someone who may have a better outlook on life as a whole, when they get out more to experience it.

This is where age restrictions should be enforced better, mostly by parents. Spend more time with your kids growing up, get to know them better. Encourage them to get outside and try new things. They'll make more mistakes, and video games are a safe passtime where you "always know where they are"... but mistakes build character. And apparently it can end in tragedy either way.

I wish I would've tried more growing up, personally.

...

That being said, why did he try to rape her? I haven't played the games, but where in COD is THAT normal? Clearly something else going on here.

Very sad situation.
On a selfish note: I hope the "videogame as a cause" angle doesn't come into play. I don't believe it would be at fault. In my opinion it's not the violent game that makes a violent person. It's the Violent person that is attracted to the violent game.
