Ive been wondering how many gamers watch anime, Probably alot but still.
In my opinion I kinda hate anime, looks weird, and it doesnt seem very mature since I watched cartoon
series also when I was a kid, so it does look very childish for me..
Probably many anime series have a good story line?
But idk, even if it does, I still have no interest in it.
Everyone has their own recommendations, so I respect that

So what are your thoughts about anime?

(sorry for my bad english)

Do you watch anime?

Yes, all the time
Yes, now and then
No, I have no interest in anime

The thing with anime that many people overlook is that asking "do you like anime" is basically like asking "do you like movies".
There are literally hundreds of genre and styles of anime, and a person will rarely enjoy every single one. There's serious anime, there's comedy anime. There's drama, action, horror, adventure, romance, sci-fi. And the same goes for the art style. There are many different styles, like for example the huge differences between Bleach, Clannad, Code;Geass and Ergo Proxy.

Without actually taking the time to search and try multiple of them to see what works better for you, there is no way to tell whether or not anime is something you enjoy or not. Also, the fact that anime looks "childish" (your words not mine) is absolutely normal. If you've watched cartoons in your youth, you'll immediately associate anime with cartoons, hence the reason they feel childish at first. That feeling will wear of after starting watching anime, trust me.

If you read my post again, you'll see that I was talking about the art style when I mentioned a few anime titles.

I've been on the fence about watching the monogatari series. That scene convinced me.
Like seriously, it went from hilarious to making me feel awkward so smoothly.

I guess most people would have turn around to never come back after seeing that. As one of the youtube coments said: Thanks god nobody walked into my room while I was watching that.
The issue here being that I always felt atracted to this weird stuff.

I know only that most people who watch anime think they are supirior and the rest of us are some random trash... I got nothing againts anime, but most of the fans are just making the thing look bad... And like serious, when they start crying that anime isnt a cartoon even if both are bloody cartoonishly drawn pictures and not some 3D animation which loads of effects which totally throws it out of the cartoon world... What you think it's supirior because it has boobs and blood drawn? It's the same... Just different style of cartoon... Get over it already -.-

It reminds me of the furry defenders, who think everyone who enjoys a female or a male human is a sick and ignorant ***, while loving animals with human bodies is something amazing...

For what its worth, most people who watch aren't like that. Unfortunately, the ones who are like that are the most vocal.

I used to work at Anime Boston running the tabletop Role Playing Game Shadowrun. (which has nothing to do with anime, but it got me free admission to the con and I was curious).

It was an interesting experience as the convention takes over a Boston mall for a weekend so you have anime fans and regular people mixing together. You had your stupid fans but by and large the community was friendly and receptive to "mundanes"

I just wish the good people were more memorable than the idiots!

Most "good people" are just pretending to be good people, my father is a pure example for that... So I doubt they are all that good, probly just managing to hold their toxinity inside while in public ^^

It is true that humans are inherently selfish, that's dictated by our biology.
And there certainly are those with false faces, who pretend to be good in public but are jerks in private.
But by and large I stand by my view that most of them are indeed good people.
(Unfortunately those who aren't are louder and more memorable)

Conventions are incredibly stressful (even if you are having an amazing time). They also are many people's first time being unsupervised. They also involve a LOT of drinking. Add that together and its awful hard to keep up a fake face.

Based on your comment, it sounds like you have a good reason for a more cynical view. I wish I could show you that there really are good people, not just pretenders, but really nothing I type can change something that your own experiences led you to feel. After all I'm just words on a screen! :(

I might catch a bit here and there on the off occasion but I'm not really into it much. I've got nothing against it per se, but I think it tends to attract the introverted and those that have difficulty functioning on a 'normal' level socially. As far as anime-themed games go, I honestly get the impression that many of them are simply coasting by on their theme rather than actually being good games and standing on their own two feet from a mechanics standpoint.

I just turned 22 and watch cartoons almost exclusively (actual cartoons mostly, though there is some "mature" stuff too).
Was into Yu-Gi-Oh! and the Pokimens as a kid; next exposure to (")anime(") was whatever adultswim would play.
Dead Leaves (pretty much th'only (")legit(") anime I think is good; one of my favorite movies; not seen on AS), F(oo)l(y)C(oo)l(y) and Lupin the Third - In that order.

Most of the anime I like are older, I rarely find new series that I enjoy. I regularly read manga though, so many manga that should have their own show but don't.

Childish is probably the last thing I'd think when it comes to anime, since a lot of it tends to have at least mild sexuality and adult themes. Think about cartoons like South Park, Family Guy and Rick and Morty, just because they are cartoons doesn't mean they are for children. Animation is just a medium and a lot can be done with it.

i can't stand it.
don't like the art in general (i just dislike the way it's drawn), voices (always those high-pitched girl that scream and make weird noises?) and the stories bore me even if i read what the anime is about.

don't be offended, not everyone likes the same.

I completely understand not liking the art style, or the voices, or the plot.
While I may personally disagree, there is nothing wrong with having different opinions.

The thing that annoys me most are those "anime hipsters" who will get pissed whenever you say that you enjoy a popular anime.

I also feel that people watching anime try to invest themselves in the characters more than normal people would.... I mean, the popular anime that those hipsters watch are always the real "emotional i crei 10/10" ones.... Ya know..... prepares for blacklisting

Simply asking about "anime" is too broad a question. As with other TV shows there are series for different ages and demographics.

Actually, comparing it with games is probably better. You have your PG games, your Teen games, and your Mature games. Same applies to anime.

Some are very clearly geared towards kids. A lot of geared towards horny teens (probably the majority). Some series are much stronger and well worth watching as an adult.

For instance, pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh and those well known english language series are aimed at kids.

Dragonball, Bleech, any show with excessive fanservice (not referring to hentai) are more for teens.

When They Cry, Kino's Journey, Garden of Sinners and a lot of others are more mature and geared towards an older audience.

Interestingly enough, a lot of the series with incredibly strong story lines were originally adult video games. Apparently they like deep / involved plot with their porn overseas!

The style is certainly not for everyone (though within the genre there are various levels of realism). Some people really don't like subtitles (I'm among them and view it as a necessary evil). Other people simply can't related enough to the culture (for instance there is usually a big deal made about names which is meaningless to many without proper cultural context).

I think what it boils down to is what your initial impressions are. If you are introduced to anime as an adult with pokemon you are going to feel you are just watching cartoons. If you are introduce to a series with an amazing story you will instead be more focused on the merit of their plots.

In short its not for everyone! I personally find it better than most of the junk on TV these days. But hey, everyone likes different things and nothing wrong with that!

Sorry for the long babble :P

I mean, ESRB ratings are not great ways to measure games, because some games rated for more audiences are just as developed and complicated as M rated games, but yes, there are definitely target audiences. That said, for a lot of the adult games being made into anime, the prevalence of fan service and sexual content in Japanese games often serves to sell units as a tacked on element, so which came first is a question.

Also, plus one for Garden of Sinners.

Well most animes are based on Manga. And manga splitted by genres for wide auditory groups (watch wiki for more). Anime is kinda movie based on manga, inherits drawn style. Manga is better then animes becouse it has no time limits for TV. And as Art objects both anime and manga partly reflects your identity and your view capibility and ability to read unwritten. And partly brings it own`s content to you. Anime creates Dialogue between Creator and auditory. (sorry for bad english)

I understend your opinion. It seems that anime creating is more complicated comparing to small manga drawning groups. And sometines it really shines as a result of collective hard work within the frameworks of project management. To keep and combine all matters while cutting redendant ones...

Then if you want longer series watch One Piece is awesome especially after time skip.

Yeah the point where they started dragging the episodes so much that you could literally die of boredom :D

As for the Death Note part, I've got to agree. Personal favourite one!

On the surface, every depiction of characters seems like it was written by individuals who had very little contact with others so they're mostly projecting their absurd expectations of how relationships, interactions and conflicts with others are supposed to work. But after you scratch some surface.....well it's still exactly like that.
As someone mentioned before, childish sexualization of characters (childish as in immature, not like sexualization of little children cause that's not what I meant. Ok let's not go there) is something that puts me off and considering that 90% of anime is filled with such fan service nowadays, you can see why I haven't seen anything new since Samurai Champloo and Death Note. But aside from that, hypersensitivity and over the top performances is also something I can't sit through (which is again something that seems like it was made by writers who had very little contact with other people). Characters are either super sad or super happy, loud, two-dimensional and there is no middle ground.

I occasionally watch some anime. Every once in a while I might binge a show or watch a show as it airs thanks to the magic of the internet, but I don't watch a ton of it. I used to be more into it, but so much of it is so bad it's hard to stay interested. I mostly watch sci-fi stuff with androids/cyborgs because that's my interest, but I also watch western shows and play games and read books with the same themes, so it's not medium specific.

I watched a couple but I stopped a couple of years ago. Damn, it gets so boring after you watched everything you were interested in. Plus I started to hate the damn industry because of the fan service and the neverending dragging of the fucking episodes.

You think anime is childish, so be it.
You don't know how to enjoy storyline, you never understand what anime is.

The only type of anime I got into is shonen anime.

From what I understood, shonen is regarded as "type of anime aimed for boys under 12", but most of the people disagree on that because of the incredible amount of blood, brutal violence and a plenty of curses. But then again, Sonic the Hedgehog says shit in the Sonic X anime , so yeah, it can be considered as medium for children. kappa
The best shonens are the short ones imo (consider watching Trigun, and Full Metal Alchemist series, those are awesome) . I've watched One Piece (about 700 episodes for now, more to come (!)) and while it has some really cool designs , creative ideas, good characters, awesome fight scenes and while it can sometimes be as hell, it can Monkey D. Drag on and a good part of the episode is a recap of another episode, the humor can be too childish, it gets annoying when people scream after a while I want Usopp dead , the writting can be cheesy etc. It's good and a lot of fun to watch, but it would be 10 times better if it was shorter.

Shonen also has good openings . One piece has 18 of them. I find this one really cool and catchy.

Regarding Studio Ghibli flicks, those are freaking amazing and I recommend you to check out every single one of them, but I don't see them as anime because they are very different from other instances of anime genre.

By the way most Steam groups with awkard or stupid names have anime avatars, so it helps me staying healthy and I try to avoid it. Manly Creatures is one of these countless examples.

I like anime.
But whenever they have some western reference or western character, I just cringe because most of the time it's a caricature of a western character (usually an American) based on how Japanese people see them: tall, blonde, big and loud. And that's the thing that I have trouble with some anime is how misinformed they are about certain things, because it's from a Japanese person's perspective.
And there's also this:
Goodness the difference between TV and BD/DVD release just makes me feel cheated.
