Do you watch anime?
I've used to watch the older anime(Lupin The Third, Spiral, Case Cold, original DBZ, Galaxy Railways, etc.) but so many series were coming out I was just overwhelmed. My friend then introduced me to World War II and I got hooked to it and I still am. I tried watching Attack on Titan though, but I lost interest after the fourth episode. I have no hate on anime or that would be very hypocritical of me.

Well, technically, the same could be said about gaming from a non-gamer perspective. Many don't understand my obsession with gaming, sadly. :P

Calling anime in general is immature just by looking at one or two titles' art style are like calling video games childish just because you've only watched people playing them imho. Several anime titles, particularly story heavy, psychological and thriller anime are more mature oriented, both in art style and the plot.
On the other hand, most mainstream anime titles are decent at best. Mainstream anime, which what would most people know, are usually targeted for younger audiences. Most of them are also mainly followed and preached by ignorant and immature weebs. The general hate and misconceptions on anime are largely caused by them, so I partly understand where you're coming from.
Also, how you feel about its art style probably depends on your taste. Generally, most people would only know about (and have only looked at) bishounen, bishoujo, and moe anime art styles.
That said, I occasionally watch story-heavy anime titles and don't really like the aforementioned art styles. I still prefer manga over anime anytime though.

Well, I think ( I may be wrong) you don't have kids yet. Once you do you will start loving these things again. :-)

I love Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, and My Neighbour Totoro... I got my friend onto those Anime and he though "kids cartoons" etc, now he's falling in love with them...

If it hasn't been mentioned, the original Ghost in the Shell movies are very mature and psychological, with only slight pandering. There's very little to no fan-service, and has a pretty interesting storyline (since they're movies they don't have filler episodes which is a plus). I agree that most anime now is "teenagers punch stuff and explosions happen" which gets old fast, but I can pick out the occasional serious series like Psycho Pass or not-as-pandering-but-not-completely-serious Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. (If these are generally looked-down-upon series, I don't care I really enjoy them) Although most cartoons are indeed directed at children, not all of them are. There are those cartoons that can touch on serious topics and not be idiotic about it. And of course anime isn't realistic looking, that would be really weird feeling (for me anyway). The general art-style allows anime to get away with things that realistic or live-action shows can't get away with, that allow the artists to create a world that couldn't exist otherwise. Just like video games, books, movies, TV shows, etc. Anime is a form of artistic expression. Obviously that doesn't mean it all has to be GOOD expression, but there are definitely a few gems in there that if found, will surprise you.

I have anime list with tags but it's not much of a help. You can trust those 10-9-8 marked, 7 and 6 are meh, 5 is something bad what have some pluses or just generic crap, 4-3 bad, 2-1 unwatchable.

All that rated at the right column as Rx is hentai

I dont like them. I want persons that are real (thus, I also do not watch TV soaps), because I want to see new perspectives on the world that actually exist. In consequence, I tend to listen many podcasts and also only some Youtubers I trust. (if they break my trust e.g. by doing product placement, I instantly unsubscribe them ofc, because then they do not present me their real view on the world anymore.)

I can't remember if I actually finished that. I definitely remember it was ecchi though.
(Since I worked at an Anime con, doing something completely unrelated, I tried to at least watch a few episodes of everything no matter how bad they were so I could recognize the costumes)

As with movies and TV shows, anime has different genres and different art styles. Some are good. Some are bad. As with movies and TV shows, some are to my taste, some aren't. The ones I dislike, some do. And the ones others like, I might not.

Is this still relevant? Honestly, my piece on it is that I have no interest in anime and I've never seen any but I recognize it more for its animation rather than "Japanese exclusive tv shows". Society-wise I'd definitely feel ashamed to watch it but then again I feel ashamed to watch any kind of teen-themed western TV show, or even super-hero TV shows. So... For me, it's not so much about what it is but what watching it details. That's not to say I'm judging it but if I feel that if it is embarrassing/weird to watch, even by myself, then I'm probably going to take heed of that and be more "cautious" about getting into something. I started watching Fringe a little while ago and that's a show that requires a certain taste to enjoy it. If you don't enjoy it, it would definitely drag on pretty easily.
Now, I'm kind of a hypocrite because just recently I randomly found a manga website and I decided to try reading some random ones (do note that nearly none of them were of a good quality, in my opinion. I decided to be a disgusting weeaboo trash asshole and see how bad the yuri stuff could get, which was actually not that bad but still, I am ashamed) and... It's not bad. I can relate it to reading newspaper shorts or what little I have seen of comic books. So, so far, it's not horrible but it's kind of fueled by my boredom. It also seems to be better for when you don't want to spend 30 minutes reading huge walls of text.
I'm probably just contradicting myself a ton and at the same time being an ignorant asshole that is talking out of his ass, but... Media and all of the "society's standards" bullshit is pretty hard to argue against, in my opinion at least. I don't see anything wrong with watching it but I'm not going to flaunt my experiences anywhere outside of the internet and at the same time I'm probably not going to broaden my horizons even though I know for a fact there's a ton of good anime-styled content (like that one movie about the giant smiling cat, whatever that's called).
I'm also wondering if any of this is even on-topic. I suppose as a "TL;DR" my point is that there's nothing wrong with it at all, people(including me) just tend to see it as a "taboo" if you're not from the correct audience (e.g. girls watching spikeTV huehuehue). Hell, I bet there's a ton of content out there that is a million times better than the shit America pumps out on a daily basis.

I just have a terrible view of everything, especially when I'm part of the problem(in the sense that I refuse to explore new things). I will, however, support anyone who decides to watch it. Free will and all that.
I'd like to also point out that anime is something that I would actually like to try, I'm just not entirely sure of where to start. I guess I could experiment but I know from experience that watching everything just to figure out what is good and what isn't good is a waste of time. It never works out when you realize how much time you've wasted.
Yeah, I'm watching season 3 right now and it gets REALLY weird. Almost off-putting but I'm wading through the hip-level lava with enthusiasm. It's still fun to watch, at least.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think it was either the end of season 3 or 4 which did it to me... I'm not sure.
If you do want to give anime a try, tell me a handful regular movies you liked... I'll see if I can think of something.
(as I mentioned in another reply someone, I sampled a LOT of series as "homework" to prepare for working an Anime convention)
I can't promise to come up with something, but can try.

See, here's the problem. I'm the type of person who can't necessarily "hate" anything. For movies and TV shows, as long as it grabs and keeps my attention as well as being cohesive. Anything that isn't of low quality(unless it's intentional or funny somehow) is good for me. As I said, I'm intending to simply try it out and see how i like the general feel of it.

I'm not really a stickler. I'm not huge on romance but I don't mind it, if it's done well and the emotions / progession of the friendship, characters, relationships, etc. are done in detail and depth. Other than that, action-y genres are always fun and I suppose mystery and sci-fi genres are my sweet-spot. No rating is required. I'm not a prude at all.

Hmm... I haven't watched these in a while, so my memory might be jaded, but here are some I suggest. They are fairly different from each other, so hopefully at least one will be appealing.
Kino's Journey - A story about a girl and her talking motorcycle traveling a f****ed up world. (saw it a long time ago and certain things have stuck with me). Not very actiony but may make you think. First two episodes are available through hulu, the end of the second is one which has stuck with me since I watched it... 10 years ago.
When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) - It starts out looking to me your standard slice of life harem series. Then it gets dark. Some people really hate the voices in it. This is one a lot of people recommend and is not for everyone. I don't know if it is available online and I wouldn't suggest starting with it.
Full Metal Panic - School Life / Comedy / Mecha with some romance thrown in. A good starter series as it exposes you to many different genres all at once. Some fan service. This is available free through hulu.
Ghost in the Shell - LONG. SciFi / Cyberpunk setting which is both thought provoking and action focused. Those two aspects don't always mesh well and sometimes the exposition gets to be a bit much. Looks to be available on hulu.
Saikano - Haven't watched in a long time, the last person I loaned it too watched it and then messaged me about how it made them cry. Its a love story about a girl who is actually a weapon... Its certainly different. Not "Saekano" which is available on hulu.
Some action series to toss in
"Another" - The school has a secret none must speak of. Then a new student arrives and everything goes to hell. Available free through crunchyroll. This is the newest series in the list.
Hellsing Ultimate (the movie series, there is also a proper anime) - The Hellsing organization tamed Dracula and use him as a weapon to fight lessor vampires and Nazis. Lots of blood, some lewdness, and I could swear the female vampire's breasts get larger as the series progresses... The movie series just finished and is probably easy to find as its incredibly popular.

Or the TL;DR version

Heh, thanks! I have fridays, saturdays, and sundays off until I eventually get a new job, so I'll try and make some time to check them out. Isn't there a really heartbreaking animated movie about two sisters in the aftermath of a war(WWII or something)? That's one that just popped into my head and I recall a lot of people saying that it's really sad.
Aaaaanyways, thanks. I'll check it out.

I can handle sad stuff too. I'm just incapable of crying, that's all. :P

Also, somebody above on this page reminded me of the anime I tried to think of : My Neighbour Totoro. I know for a fact that is a quality anime from... the 90's? Anywho, yeah, an example of an anime that I see the worth in.
Comment has been collapsed.
come to think of it, that could describe the american / life action movies I remember growing up in the 80's.
perhaps that's why I'm not bothered by anime ;)
I could care less about ecchi/fanservice as long as there is a good plot to back it up. I avoid yaoi, yuri and hentai as well though I can understand why people would enjoy them.
If I, as a straight male, can watch a traditional romance, its only fair that there are romance style series for other orientations. Additionally by having a non-traditional romance you can focus on the emotional side of things rather than the sexual side. (granted that's not enough to convince me, but for some people it is!)
Vaguely related, I watched a funny video once where they showed Japanese men American porn. They didn't show what they watched in the video, just their reactions. Based on that though, it sounds like Japanese porn has an actual plot as opposed to the stereotypical pizza guy / plumber scenario in the US :P
And now I'll stop procrastinating doing work. :(

the quick anser is that it depends on the Anime. There's a huge range in quality, maturity and subject matter, with some of them having very grown-up themes and concepts.
Western animation very rarely goes into non-kid-friendly territory, and I don't think there's been a decent mainstream grown-up oriented animated movie since Ralph Bakshi's stuff in the '70s

I don't agree that Anime are childish, but I pretty much hate them (with few exceptions)... Story might be good, but usually, the way it is presented is painfully bad... Movies are almost always too fast and confusing, and on the opposite end; series are very, very slow and repetitive...
Violence is usually exaggerated, characters completely unrealistic (I'm not talking about abilities) and script is very weird...
Anyway, aside from few exceptions, IMO Anime are very, very bad...
But; to each his own...

I love anime.
Not the ones that oversexualize women and have shitty protogonists that cry about everything. I watched hundreds of animes but I'm really picky on what I watch.
I loved Steins;Gate , Death Note, Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
I kinda love the One Punch Man too. Weird for my taste but it's pretty fun.

I like anime implemented in JRPGs most,
I like animation too including ero anime, if no one watch it, it would be a waste, so I'll go and volunteer myself to watch.

Mushishi, Elfen Leid and Hellsing.
Apart from those, which I carefully watched a while back and the plots really interested me, I think I'm one of those whose opinion on Anime is just meh. Why? I wish I'd know too. Most of the times I find myself trying to watch anime content just to realized I'm either bored to tears, cringing with the excessive kidification (Is that even a word?O_o It is now.) of the series or the over sexualization of same characters. (like, seriously, 15 year old girls with HUMONGOUS bouncing boobs is not giving me something to stay and watch..) I also can't stand the voices, but prolly that's my fault, not the genre's.
TL,DR--> Some are ok, some are meh, just like any other genre.

Anime is overrated
I read manga and manhwa. Well most anime, if not all, is from manga anyway

Ive been wondering how many gamers watch anime, Probably alot but still.
In my opinion I kinda hate anime, looks weird, and it doesnt seem very mature since I watched cartoon
series also when I was a kid, so it does look very childish for me..
Probably many anime series have a good story line?
But idk, even if it does, I still have no interest in it.
Everyone has their own recommendations, so I respect that
So what are your thoughts about anime?
(sorry for my bad english)
