Due to recent events, I think a Winner should be obligated to add the Game to his library immediatly, once he accepts it, without the 7 days period. No harm in waiting 7 days before accepting it, but once you do, it should not be allowed to add it to your inventory.

I know, 1 bad Apple does not make the Tree bad, but still. I think this way we can faster sort out the scammers. Someone who won a giveaway won 2 Games the last 2 weeks and still did not add them to his library but his inventory. After I asked him to add it, he set his inventory to private. And he is also in some kind of trading group. Speaks books by itself. Please don't jump into conclusions by searching my last created giveaways, you would not know who it is anyway and I am not telling.

But I think this small rulechange might help in sorting the bad guys out.

edit:
Another good change could be to parse the UserXML once a Gift has been marked as received. If the game is not there, the account should not be able to enter any more giveaway until this is resolved.

Well, some people comes here to win give-away(s) then send them to his/her friends as gifts. I saw it happening.

Not everyone is a scammer, as eventually the give-away has a purpose, because someone gets it who really needs it. But it is true that some people just ninja games and then sell it or trade it, fooling others with them.

Think about it this way: the rules are there to make it fair for everyone - we all have one "ticket" each. If someone wants a game and they ask all their friends who don't want the game to enter for them and then give them the game, they will have more than one ticket and therefore a greater chance to win. Of course, not all situations are like this, but there is no way to know. The simple solution is to just get the friend to enter instead.

The FAQ already states you have to add it as soon as you get it("The submitter and winner(s) of the giveaway have seven (7) days to complete the gifting process. This includes the activation of the gift on the Steam account of the winner."). I don't see any point in this thread. Users that don't follow that rule can be reported in the Support section

How is it a steam problem if the winner adds it to his inventory? You get the choice when you are gifted a game to add it to your library or your inventory.

Permalink

Because steam gave them the option to do so, you should ask this on the steam forums instead and ask why a gifted game is allowed to be put in a persons inventory. Steamgifts can't do anything about this.

Yes we can. By disallowing people to add it to their inventory when they accept the gift.

Does not stop them, but gives a reason to ban them faster.

This is a Steamgifts issue. I don't see what's wrong with Steam allowing a gifted game to be placed in a person's inventory. If a friend gave me Dino D-Day, for instance, and I didn't really want the game, but thought it was rude to simply reject the gift, I could give it to someone else who really wanted the game.

If you dont want a game on steam gifts simply do not enter the giveaway.

Giving more chances of winning for someone who really wants the game

If your friend wants that game tell him to make a steamgift account and enter the giveaway =D

Before a game goes into my library, shouldn't it go through a mandatory purgatory period where it will meditate on the sins it commited before entering my account? Only after such cleansing shall it be deemed acceptable for it to enter the holy library where I will make it the immense honor of playing it. (The pretty picture seemed like a good argument too.)

I would say as soon as possible. Sometimes people aren't on for maybe a while but there is no excuse once they do get back. Yea I agree that people who don't activate the game should be banned, but the 7 day waiting period is worth it. What happens if the winner is on holiday for example? Bit harsh to win and then be banned cos you didn't take the gift or loose your win to a re-roll.

From reading the other thread, theusers will be flagged for review by the admin. If you have created a public giveaway and didn't notice that the winner didn't activate the game on their account they're not gonna ban you for that. They will target people making fake private giveaway with just a couple of friends entering to boost their number. It should be pretty easy to make the difference.

I think that the last point is a good one. The system can tell if a game won exists in the account. If the user marked a game as received but it's not in the account on the next sync, then it's possible to mark the account.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That is a pretty good idea. After syncing, the user gets a message "You have gifts marked as received that do not exist in your account. You cannot enter giveaways until this is resolved. If you think this is a mistake or there are special circumstances, contact support."

This could work though, after marking a game as received, the user could be forced to synch again before entering any more giveaways. We can't set our profile to private to enter steamgifts, I guess the same rule could be applied to our inventories, and steamgifts could check them too to let people enter in giveaways.

Sometimes I buy games, but I don't add them to my library immediately. I have a normal life full of stuff that sometimes don't allow me to download and play games everyday. I want to have the option to let a game in my inventory if I want it.

Well I understand both sides of the story:

You aren't giving the game away because you're entering it for your friend, you do it for yourself and you eventually think "well I don't want this game but my friend does" You aren't really doing it for your own benefit.

I also understand that it is rude to give away a free gift and it was taken away from people who may have actually WANTED to play it.

I know it baffles some of you to why people would do that, but people have a change of thought. I don't think we should outright ban people who don't add games to their inventory, but we could stop them from entering giveaways until they do. Banning for just adding to your inventory seems... harsh.

If you decide you don't want the game anymore gift it back to the creator with a note saying something like "Thank you very much but I decided I didn't want this".
