Due to recent events, I think a Winner should be obligated to add the Game to his library immediatly, once he accepts it, without the 7 days period. No harm in waiting 7 days before accepting it, but once you do, it should not be allowed to add it to your inventory.

I know, 1 bad Apple does not make the Tree bad, but still. I think this way we can faster sort out the scammers. Someone who won a giveaway won 2 Games the last 2 weeks and still did not add them to his library but his inventory. After I asked him to add it, he set his inventory to private. And he is also in some kind of trading group. Speaks books by itself. Please don't jump into conclusions by searching my last created giveaways, you would not know who it is anyway and I am not telling.

But I think this small rulechange might help in sorting the bad guys out.

edit:
Another good change could be to parse the UserXML once a Gift has been marked as received. If the game is not there, the account should not be able to enter any more giveaway until this is resolved.

Impossible to enforce. Pointless debate. I don't see the point in even being nosy about someone's inventory. It's none of your business what's in someone else's inventory anyway.

Your claims that checking this is impossible only displays how ignorant you are of how Steam works and the vast information available from it. Not to mention the ease at which someone with some basic scripting knowledge and access to a computer can pull from the Steam site. The site admin here already has plans to implement something of this nature, so maybe before you go running your mouth next time you'll do your homework.

I was referring to how Steamgifts works with Steam currently. Now that other people have been explaining how it could be changed, the suggestion makes sense - if Steamgifts decides to change and can.

Also, are you saying that Steamgifts can pull information from an inventory which is set to private?

Nope, but they'll only need info on the library which they have somewhat access to if the user wants to be able to stay active on here.

Why do you guys offer games if you're going to be controlling the people who receive them? When you offer a gift to a friend do you go to the back window on his house and stay there waiting for them to use your gift? Would you be this mad if he put your gift in a drawer to use it later?

You wanted to give away something, now it's from someone else. Why are you trying to force people to do what you want with what you gave them? What's the point of gifting if you're trying to have control over it after?

If you are charitable and care enough to donate something, then you would prefer it go to the person who actually won the little game we play called giveaways. The gifters dont have to donate, they could just give away things to their friends. SG exists only on the generosity of many people on this site, and therefore it is really up to them to decide the rules. If you dont like it, leave. I see you haven't contributed in any way to the site in giveaways, so why should we listen to you?

"I see you haven't contributed in any way to the site in giveaways, so why should we listen to you?"
Because I'm part of the community?
What's with the circle jerk attitude? 'omg he never created a giveaway, he's not one of us, no one listen to him'

Fyi, I never created a giveaway because the rules from this website forbid me from doing so. I could have donated a bunch of extra games from bundle and what not, but I would be banned for offering games............go figure.
Though I end up offering them in other ways. But I digress.

Like you said, the key sentiment which rules this community is generosity. So why ruin it after the deed is done?! You gladly abdicated from the possession of something to a random person out of cheer generosity (I hope)...why go back on your deed and try to force the other person to do what you think it's right. You do something really great, to give, and then come back to force the other person to act has you think it's fit? You made someone happy by giving something, leave it at that.

If you want your gifts to be appreciated in a way you see fit, it's better to give them to someone you know.

I feel it's relevant to discuss the fact that you haven't given anything away on Steam Gifts because you're claiming to know a lot about what should be motivating people to give games to strangers. People don't give games away completely altruistically, they do it because it makes them feel good. It feels good when I see that someone I gave a game to is playing it right now, or when they thank me for the gift (or even the opportunity to win the gift).

"The key sentiment that rules this community is generosity."
COMMUNITY! What do you know of community? It's not a one-way street. What kind of community has one group of people giving freely of games they bought with their hard-earned money and another group who do nothing but take those gifts and remove them from the community? If you want to give gifts to your friends, buy them yourself.

What happens when I give something to a stranger, and they turn around and give the game away to someone else outside of Steam Gifts or even worse, sell it, is that that person is saying: "FUCK YOU! I asked you for this gift, and was lucky enough to win it, I know there are X other people in this little community who also wanted it and would be grateful to be able to play it, but I'm going to give it away to someone outside the community. Oh, and FUCK YOU again."

Like I said, I may not have given games through steam gifts, but that does not mean I haven't given games. The games I offered were not offered through hee because the rules don't allow it.

What the hell are you talking about? You make it sound like I'm the one doing it, or like I'm saying people should do it... again I'm part of the community, because the community is not the circle of people who create giveaways as a lot of people seem to think, the community is the people that interact with each other, I may have not created any giveaway, that doesn't mean I can't talk to people in here or make friends.

When I want to offer something to a friend, I buy it. That was never my point, I'm not saying I enter giveaways to gift the gitfs afterward. I'm saying is that if you're giving something away, why would you stalk the person you offered afterwards and control her every move regarding the gift? Because it's not just this, I've seem people trying to control how much the winner of their prises play the games... It's pathetic to see something quite great, to give, suddenly turn into active stalking to know where they put the gift or what they are doing with it, or how long are they playing it...............

'What happens when I give something to a stranger, and they turn around and give the game away to someone else outside of Steam Gifts or even worse, sell it, is that that person is saying: "FUCK YOU! I asked you for this gift, and was lucky enough to win it, I know there are X other people in this little community who also wanted it and would be grateful to be able to play it, but I'm going to give it away to someone outside the community. Oh, and FUCK YOU again."'
The only way you're going to prevent that from happening is if you give the gift to the people who really want them instead of putting it up for every random guy, because if you put it up for everyone there is always a chance it will go to someone who has other plans for it. It's the internet...not that I like it, but it is how it is. You can gift games in other ways than a public giveaway, you can gift them directly (I do that a lot), or you can gift them in private/group giveaways.

Because food is something essential for life, drugs can be a serious problem, and games are a luxury?...
You're comparing someone who has a problem so big as to be addicted to something to the point of trading food for it...to someone who sees someone offering games on the internet and thinks 'eh, why not' and joins a giveaway.

Where are you drawing the comparisons?

If my friend had asked me for a game that they said they wanted, only for them to put it in a drawer to use later or give away to someone else, I wouldn't be mad, but I would be a little upset/sad.

If I bought something for a friend that they'd asked me for, and they then turned around, literally turned around, and immediately sold it in front of my face, then yes, I'd be pissed the fuck off. Luckily, my friends are classier than that. Unfortunately, strangers are pricks (until they prove otherwise) and the only way to make them play nicely is with rules like this.

If a real life friend gave you a game that you'd asked him for and he found out later that you'd never played it and given it away, do you seriously not think that person would be a little hurt?

I can see your point, but, when you offer something to someone, do you go behind their backs to know what they are doing with it?

Also, the didn't asked for it! You are the creator of the giveaway, the site doesn't work around people asking, it works by people volunteering to offer. It's like you entered a bar and said I have this beer to offer to someone, most often then not everyone inside it provably will join the giveaway, even if they know they don't really like beer, because hey, its an offer.

(Side note: How do you write in bold? Neither bbcode nor html tags seem to be working for me)

The thing is, it's not that "person X has to play Y hours of the game they won from me".

They're simply asking that people follow the site rules, and only enter giveaways for games they want, and therefore add to their library. If you can't follow the site rules, you're going to get banned at some point in time from the site, and you'll cease to have the opportunity to enter to win gifts at all.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I've already answered that... I know it's the sites rules and that is not my point.

My point is how people do something great, and then go back on their deed start to actively stalk the person they gifted to!! They gave something away and instead of being happy about it they want to control the winner's actions. The 'see if the person has played the game he won' was just another example.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Who are these people stalking their winners to see if they've played the games? This was something brought up by you alone. The OP saw that the winner didn't redeem the game, but instead went to trade it. Comparing that to stalking and any authoritarian viewpoint is pure hyperbole.

The OP said they want the game to go into the person's library, not to see if they play it. Aka, they want the person to adhere to the site rules.

You go hard into the strawmans.

"The winner must add game immediately to library" becomes "Winners are being stalked by contributors to see if they're playing the game or not" in your eyes.

This isn't the discussion at all. Contributors simply want winners to add their games to their library. Meaning they can't sell or trade it. They don't have to play it, they don't have to do anything with it, it can just sit there for as long as Steam exists. This prevents the generosity of contributors from being abused.

The only difference between how the current system works, and the OP's idea is the amount of time allotted to add it to the library. The OP doesn't want to watch people, the OP wants people to do what they're supposed to and not abuse their generosity.

People shouldn't enter games they don't even want. Games deserve to go to people that actually plan to play the games. If they trade it away, that's just a slap in the face to the people that give the games away.

Maybe, if someone wins a game, steamgifts will automatically sync their account after a week. If the item is not in their library, they are banned from steamgifts for..say...a month or a few weeks.

Not the same scenario. Did you even wear the sweater? It's fine to give it to the salvation army later on, but you should enjoy it since the person was kind enough to give it to you.

Oh wait, you didn't want it. Better say "fuck you, Grandma" and give the sweater away.
And if people say you're being unkind? "Oh it's ok, I'm giving this to a charity."

How is it not the same scenario? Gram pays (or even worse, MAKES it) for you. Just like paying for a game or gift.
Gives it to her desired recipient, the gift receiver. AKA you. Same principal.

If its lime green and pink neon stripes and feels like its got scratchy cotten all over it, I doubt anyone would wear it.
I enjoy the thought as it counts, but I'm sure it could go to better use if it turns out I don't like it.

Better than it sitting in the trash no?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not the same scenario because you're entering to win a gift from a total stranger. "I need/want this", then it turns out, you were just entering to see if you could win something.

Kinda like a raffle where the first prize is a DVD season of a TV show you hate. But you enter and win anwyays, cuz LOL.

It's not the same scenario because you choose what to enter. Your grandmother may give you something you don't want but these strangers don't want to give you the game if you don't want it. You actually have to opt into the gifts here. Meaning you ask for the opportunity to receive the gift.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not the same scenario because no one forced you to enter the giveaway, if you don't want the game... simply don't enter the giveaway. And there you go, no problems at all and no need to dump a gift you don't want.

Whereas with grandmothers sweater you don't have the option of simply saying 'don't give me an ugly sweater'. Well, I suppose you could but that would be rather rude.
No one here is going to take offence if you decide you're not interested in their giveaway and decline to enter however.

Its the sites rule, I dont believe it should be somehow instantly added to your library but somehow you have to be able to monitor where it goes, I would agree with the 7 day leeway time period until they have to install the game in their library. If the dont maybe a three teir warmning system, not banned instanly but given a chance. And if you are getting the game for someone elses Steam profile, why arent they getting it in the first place.

Just my opinion, dont hate it.

All this is gonna change is people who have no intention of keeping the games anyways are just gonna set the feedback to "Did Not Receive" and steal it anyways. They are banned either way, only difference is, the Creator is the one that'll get dinged for it too.

How are you gonna prove it otherwise? Can't track where the games go to as far as I know, only if the person who entered it received it.
Key giveaways are already touchy business.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone resubmitted the key I give out or gave it away.

Those who enter to just trade or giveaway are going to continue doing so. Dummy accounts aren't that hard to recreate.

I feel this is a Bad Idea. Generally, I do not redeem any games, that I purchase, trade for, or otherwise, until I am right about to play it. Why? Bundles. Bundles, galore. There's always a good chance that a collection of some kind at a later date that includes it, and having it in my inventory allows me to pass on something that I would otherwise have wasted a license for. We cannot give away bundle keys, after all -- and in many cases, such as Steam collections or Humble bundles, its all one license/key anyway.

Automatically enforcing this is yet another policy where SeamGifts cuts off its nose to spite its face.

I wondered about Bundle giveaways too, they seemed to work rather oddly.

Does a person still qualify for a bundle if they only bought the non-BTA version? Or are they forever barred from getting those extra games? Or worse, can they enter the same bundle multiple times? (Has never won a Bundle to know.)

I know that upon syncing accounts, Bundled games properly appear as existing in the individual fashion, but it takes some time for them to be recognized I noticed, leaving a possibility of people winning extra copies.

The point of steamgifts is for generosity and for people getting games they want to play. I don't want to be banned just because I prefer to not accept/redeem a gift. I'd give it to someone that would actually play it. Even if for a minute.
